ATTN NOOBIES! - New to ArmA II or OA - Here's the place for your questions

Recommended Posts

Yeah... umm I'm aware of the fact that I could drive it myself or use the editor, but that still doesn't address the fact that you can't order units to move at different speeds when playing other peoples missions.

I can't even begin to imagine why BI hasn't included a movement speed command in the menu.

Joystick questions:

Can anyone tell me if the game supports joysticks with multiple hat switches and lots of buttons which can all be re-mapped to various functions....OR....does the joystick's controller-software need to be running in the background to do this?

Also, could the joystick be mapped to replace the standard movement keys for infantry ? I know keyboard is usually better for movement, but I sometimes have problems with my hands that makes it difficult.

Thanks in advance for any help !:)

Based upon my experience with an X52 - yes all the buttons/hats etc. are mappable. Just picked the command I wanted to map and then hit the appropriate joystick button or move an axis etc. Though I haven't tried it I'm sure you can map the joystick to movement of units other than vehicles.

The STEALTH, AWARE, DANGER, SAFE commands give the units different speeds aswell as modify their combat behaviour

Yeah that works well enough for infantry, but it doesn't make a difference to vehicle speed. What we need is the ability to order a movement speed that is seperate to combat stance. Safe will force vehicles to use roads - but at full speed. what if you want to use roads but get them to drive slowly?

Is there a way to change the Opfor in "Warfare" from Middle-East types

to say "Russian"? (Or Warfare OA Modules).

I wanted a Russian-Warfare & Construct without having to write out a

whole construct script from scratch.

I have the "Combined Operations"

Narsil, I was able to remap ALL of the keys of my joystick without any software even installed. As for infantry I dont know, but for cars that worked fine once I tried.

In-vehicle Radio Chatter volume control:

Which audio setting controls the volume of the radio chatter inside vehicles?

or even suggest a mod that may acheive a reduced volume.

Thanx in advance.

I just bought the Arma 2 - Combined Operations (awaiting delivery)

and was playing the demo.

I have a question about the walking/running control.

I hold the W key and when I let go it does not stop.

If I tap the W key a few times I get some controlled short walk/runs.

Is that the normal behavior or are the control keys inputs/system lagging?

How would you run 50 yards? Hold down w for a couple seconds at a time?

I plan on upgrading my hardware as it may be a little slow being a single core AMD Athlon at about 2800 Mhz speed and 2 gig Ram, with ATI radeon 1800 video.

I'm transitioning from COD which becomes tedious and uninteresting after a while of playing the same maps over and over with unrealistic kills.

Although it does keep your reaction time tuned up.

Looking forward to discovering the fun world of Arma2, and doing more tactical and logistic playing.

You absolutely need a new processor, single core will not work. The video card will be a liability too.

I discovered that my keyboard was indeed lagging due to bottle necked resources.

I ran the Demo again after a clean reboot, and flushing all the useless programs in Task Manager and got things working nicely as they should.

My first mission into a town, I got my ass kicked though.

After about 3 tries of sneaking up and staying low, I eventually just drove into a corner of town with a hummer, bailed and ran into the first building quickly and closed all the doors while I tried to see where the shooting was coming from.

When I did finally sneak outside to get down to business a welcoming committee kicked my ass in short order despite my bursts into their midst from about 20 ft. Not even one kill....crikey!

I need to snarf a sniper rifle from a fallen soldier next time and work from a distance until I learn the AI's strategy.

They also seem to appear from nowhere so perhaps my view range is too short due to my sub standard hardware.

I have my upgrade plans made except for the OS choice.

This is what I'm planning.

- Phenom x4 955 BE

- Radeon 1gig HD 5770

- 4 gig RAM DDR3 1200

- 550 Watt Power supply

Windows 7 64bit, it's no choice really. :) Sounds like you're having some great firefights. I really enjoy the challenging ones where you never know where they'll be coming from!

Hey guys! Ive got arma2 and i love the campaign and huge missions in it. Is the Arrowhead campaign built in a similar way? Do i get to run around the country side going from mission goal to mission goal, finding clues like in Arma2??

Thank you

Hi all

Are mortars (direct fire) able to be used in OA without scripting or mods (I'm talking about first-person firing of a mortar tube, as distinct from calling mortars via the support module).

I've seen videos of people aiming and firing mortars but can't find a tutorial for it.

thanks in advance

Complete noob question I guess:

Is there a way of mapping Walk as the default movement and Running when pressing shift? i.e. the reverse of the default setup.

Also I notice there is a kind of simulated "inertia" when entering run or walk from standstill, where you kind of "lurch" forward to simulate a "step" - is there a way of disabling this so you can make more precise movements in CQB environments or just adjusting your position behind cover?

Other than those two items this is a great game/sim.

Double tap Shift to default to walking speed. For CQC I usually just hold shift when I need to walk since moving fast, quickly, is more important to me than slow.

I tried multiplayer mode in the demo and cam e up with a list of only about 4 game servers to chose from.

Are there more Multiplayer games being hosted out there?

How would I find and get to them?

I joined one of the 4 games and after about 5 minutes was booted off.

Perhaps it was a private game? My ping was unacceptible. Or my inexperience was showing?

Is there a place for Noobies to practice multiplayer?

Also in the demo, I created a mission but it seemed like preconfigured soldier types were all could select, although I could pick the numbers.

Is there a way to select various soldier types (Riffleman, Specialists etc) to make a composite squad with assorted weapons? Or is that a limitation of the demo?

ARMA2 - CO CD's should arrive this week.

One thing you need to be aware of is you're not seeing all the servers, regardless of which version you're using. If you're using OA, you'll only see OA/CO servers. If you're using A2 you'll only see those servers. If you're using the demo you'll only see demo servers.

Normal server lists for me are 10-15 good ping (under 100) servers, maybe another 20 or so bad pings. The same amount of passworded servers with the same pings. There's quite a few hidden servers as well you'll never see unless you're part of whatever group runs them. Basically though there's a small group of 4-5 servers I generally stick to due to the maturity and teamwork of the guys that play there.

Haven't tried the demo, but I thought it had the full editor in it? Try just placing down what Units (F1) you want and Group (F2) them by dragging a line between the units.
