How high is the Skybox?

Recommended Posts

Does anybody have an idea how high the skybox in Arma2 is (in metres, please)?

Also, what units do the vehicle speed and altitude indicators use?

I think it's somewhere around 15km up, though I'm just basing that on how high I've managed to get in an F-16.

I would think that, like the land, it is infinite. The skybox image will just be a graphic composite as either the last, or first, element in building up the ingame image.

Arma 2 is way too realistic for a skybox! As soon as a Space Shuttle mod comes out, we will be able to fly to the moon!

Just joking, i have no idea how high it is, although it does seem pretty infinite!

skybox is probably centered on your character at all times. when u move it moves etc etc

Space Shuttle with launch and space transition has been done for OFP, it was (and is) pretty cool :p

See this one for screens (old version, there's a 0.9 out):

A mlod of the skybox would be most awesome for custom skies as I'm having problems getting the boundaries right, make them seamless.

Do not try to reach the skybox - that's impossible. Instead, only try to realize the truth: there is no skybox.

Arma 2 probably has upper atmosphere and space modeled in, but to reach it we need a powerful enough rocket just like irl.

I agree. There seems to exist some sort of limit, though it isn't just a glass ceiling. I may be wrong in this, however, and the atmosphere may just go up and up.

And yes, the actual skybox texture seems to be centered on the player. Weird, how you never seem to pass those clouds no matter how high you climb :D

An interesting experiment would be to mod the colour change in upper atmosphere and the transition to orbit.

The final conclusion is that there's plenty of room up there for dogfights, hot air balloons and zeppelins :) I wonder if it's possible to mod thermals rising from the ground since the sun and winds are already modelled...

More or less so... the skybox doesn't need to be a huge cube with an actual ceiling... it's more practical to have it as an object tied to the camera that has it's Z index set at the last position, meaning it always gets drawn behind everything else

most game engines have the option to tie a skybox to the camera, so it doesn't really occupy a particular point in space... it's a rendering trick. So the skybox is infinitely high ;)

Cheers

Arma 2 does have a hight limit, but it's not really the sky box as it's not a rendered surface. you can reach it and get stuck on it around 50,000 meters.

if you have a jet addon with afterburners, you can reach it.

A couple of weeks ago, I used the command in a players init line to allow myself to choose the height he starts at. I did some high number in the tens of thousands, I forget which one, and when I spawned, everything was totally white, and I could move around on this flat invisible ground. I probally got a few things mixed up here, but it's what I remember.
