The trials & tribulations of a noob.

Recommended Posts

Steakslim, it's reasonable (you have a HUGE amount of patience and forgiveness.. 2hrs? 30min tops for me in that situation, lol). It takes two to tango, the server/mission/admin has to provide a reasonable experience and environment, and the player has to do some homework on the mission (read the briefing in the map and notes for heavens sake!!) and the people playing. If the player doesn't gather info on what the objective is, where people are now, and what part they can play to help the mission, problems arise. If the admin doesn't set some expectations and limits on behavior, problems arise.

It's reasonable. Many people get called 'elitist' because they have higher expectations of themselves and others. It's just another way of people to say 'I don't care to be that specific (or detailed, or diciplined, or whatever), and don't think you should be either'. Personally, I'd rather raise the bar than lower it.

Cheers

It's their server, a common factor in ALL pc games that have an online multiplayer. They pay for the server, they can run it how they see fit, and in most cases they are very fair about it. It is also situation that can be simply dealt with by either complying and joining in on their TS channel (which in most cases ends up a good thing), or just refrain from attempting to use anything that they wish you to be on TS for while operating, or just avoid playing on the server altogether. In no way is this scenario some malicious scheme, or an unfair compromise. Don't assume that the server admin enforcing said rule are dictating dick-heads, who by the way, ARE the genuine players in most cases. It's just a simple request that if you wish to fly, you must be willing to communicate via their prefered application. I've seen this in servers for Project Reality and the old Desert Combat mod for BF. It is a fair request.

I can recall a few days ago, in a Dom server some guy was wrecking a lot of aircraft on a server, to the point that when he took off, I could almost time how quickly the "*User* was killed" message would appear. When he wasn't getting shot down or flying into the side of mountains, he was busy blindly shooting his teammates with the A-10. Now in all honesty he was trying to kill the "bad guys" but he was failing to "communicate" with his fellow teammates even with VON available to him, and no one knew what he was doing up there. It was to the point we repeatedly would spam the chat and VOIP where we were and to not fire, but as sure a shit he'd light us up. It's one thing to recover a CDF Mi-8 and use it as transport, again spamming that there's a friendly Mi-8, and to check fire before engaging (detailing flight path and everything) and the fuckhead still fires at us repeatedly even after telling him that it's blue on blue. However when announcing that we have friendlies within the AO, and he carelessly proceeds in dropping bombs in the site, it's aggrivating. All during this, not once did he respond in either VON and the chat channels. He pretty much acted like we were not there at all. Thankfully his reign of stupidity only lasted 2 hours. If admin with the ability to boot him from the server were present to enforce said rule of using TS/Vent, it would of saved us a lot of grief. It makes you wonder if some people are able to grasp the concept of the game's communication system to begin with, let alone a 3rd party application.

If I sound elitist in this rant, then so be it, but I agree with the measures some folks use on their servers to avoid an overall lack of teamplay.

You've misunderstood me. The "dick-heads" I refer to are those who give the server admins cause to disable VOIP. What I'm saying is that the server admins are allowing the dick-heads to win.

What the admins should do instead is perma-ban the dick-heads as and when they can. After a few weeks most of them would be gone. That's on the assumption people can be banned via a game-ID, as is the case with Steam games.

Welcome to the world of simulations, it's not supposed to be easy. This is NOT BF/COD/whatever where your enemies are clearly marked so you surely can't miss them. Let's hope you never join the military because there also it's up to you to decide between friend and foe.

Wolle - do you not think there is a bit of a conflict between your position as moderator and this kind of post ? It's pretty disappointing to see this kind of attitude from a moderator. :(

Some of the points that Langnasen makes are very fair IMHO. Clearly there are mission-specific rules that BIS have no control over but there are also things that BIS could do to improve general MP play. Jerky helicopters have been a characteristic of the game since OFP and could do with being improved, putting uniforms in the manual is an excellent idea. Fundamentally I agree with this statement....

Somebody at BI really isn't getting it. Are they? In a game market full of non or poor swimmers the policy of throwing noobs in at the deep-end isn't really that clever

IMO (again) BIS would have a larger market if they took steps to improve the MP experience, whether or not that experience is largely controlled by them or admins and mission makers.

Not to worry, he made an assumption and it made an ass of him. ;):D

I am also a noob, and the answer to my problem is probably simple. Anyway, here it goes: Every time I'm riding in the back of an LAV and get sick of waiting for the AI gunner to engage a target, I tend to just jump in the gunner position myself. However, after I do so, I move to the back seat and nobody retakes the gunner position even if I order all to disembark, then order all to get in LAV. How do I get the gunner to retake his gunner position, instead of sitting in the back seat? It's like he's offended, lol.

Also, when your AI teammates ask your position, how do you tell them?

The AI remember the seat they were last in, making it easier to disembark and have them all get back in at the same seats they were in. Basically, if you want an AI to get in gunner position just tell him to board the car at gunner position and he'll remember that he's gunner until you put him elsewhere.

As for the position, you can't tell the AI where you are, that's really just there for the AI to report their positions, but you can tell the AI to move to a location near you then when they have you in sight tell them to regroup.

....kind of attitude

What he said is true, can't see anything wrong with that!

I think sbsmac meant that Wolles remarks might be interpreted as a personal attack, but only to people who are blissfully unaware of the finer qualities of this excellent gentleman-moderator.

Anyways, tactical outfits are the way to go for arma. The public scene is (sadly) not a very good representative of the game, but it is the first thing newcomers see. Best of luck with the gaming, Mr. Langnasen!

Thanks guys. I'm in the process of applying for a squad now, so hopefully the pubs will soon be a thing of the past. :)

Good luck! And remember to come back here after a while when you got settled in and tell us how the game feels. ;)

It should make all the difference in the world, and ARMA2 will definatelly give you awesome experiences given that you end up with a good team.

That's exactly what I went ahead and did - Found a local 'Country' group of gamers who game to the expectations I imagined and am enjoying the gaming experience of ARMA II alot more so than jumping into th random public servers :) In actual fact I've yet to return to a public server since joining the group I'm currently gaming with.

Select who you want to be gunner. Hit 4, (Mount) Select the vehicle, then position. Done. If you look at the vehicle list, it will show you the ones you own as well as others.

Well, when I played MP last night when prompted by an AI friendly, the soldier I was controlling seemed to automatically report his position, because he said, "I'm at 667854(or whatever number)". There must be a command if the game did it for me, and they ask you. I can't imagine that BI would create a communication that can't be responded to. Also, I already tried that workaround way of instructing them to go to that tree, for example, and he again responds with, "Where are you?" lol. I guess because he doesn't know to which tree I was referring. :)

I know, I'm hopeless.

He was probably still moving there anyway, that happens sometimes.

Stand still and press the Function Key corresponding to him and if his distance is getting closer to you or the tree then you know he's on his way.

I would think that any server with rules such as this would have them posted in the chat window as you join. We enforce the Vehicle TS rule pretty strictly, and we don't wait for more than a few seconds before kick. We can do that because our server spams multiple times that you can't fly/drive without being on TS. It's not a reason to be an ass, just a way to keep order. And as a result, we have a pretty successful public server, with 18-35 almost every night.

We get a few complainers, but they usually quite down after realizing they didn't have the patience to read a few lines of text stating the rules of the server.

Yep what Durka has said we have it set at multispam when you are loading so you will see rules 10 times before you enter map.
