I love ARMA2, should i pick up ARMA1?

Recommended Posts

I played the heck out of the OPF games but never made the move to ARMA until ARMA2 and i got a good PC for it. Should i pick up a copy of the original? Will i be disappointed?

if u think Arma 2's Campaign is bad, Arma 1's is still unplayable in my opinion.

Yeah i heard a lot of people say they prefer the feel of ARMA1.

As much as I loved Arma 1, there's not point in going back. You can get Saharni into Arma 2 easily and it works and looks better than in the original. Single player was nothing like Harvest Red. More like a string of random missions. Warfare was good in MP. Queens Gambit had its moment.

I'd say Save your money for Arrowhead if you want to play the Army... and go to the Add-on discussion forum if you want to play on Sahrani.

I loved Arma 1 campaign personally and still go back to mess around with it occasionally, but it makes me laugh so hard when I see them run.

Still, if you can get it for cheap then it's worth it for the singleplayer campaign.

My opinion of Arma1 - stable now and with tonnes and tonnes of awesome mods already out. Really great to play now...

Arma2 - Alot more mods coming and possibility of porting all previous campaigns from OFP/Arma1 to Arma2 . eg CAA1, CWR team...etc.

I personally still play arma1 CWR alot eventhough I own both arma1 and arma2.

I also think that the last 2 missions of Arma 1 campaign (normal, not QG) beat CWC.

I was thinking of picking up Arma1 out the bargain bin for the same reasons (played the heck out of OFP and love Arma2). However, Arma1 is not multi-core enabled and I don't like having one core at 100% while the other three do nothing. So that was the decider for me. I'll wait to see if the modding community ports the Arma1 missions/campaign to Arma2.

There's nothing in ArmA1 that isn't in or improved upon in ArmA2.

Nothing yeah ..... but performance in terms of fraps sure is still better with AA1 - on my rig.

Of course, the advancements in graphics and AI drain the PC power, so it's good to go back and jump from my 27 fps average in Arma 2 to my 100 fps average in Arma 1.

no way. seriously. ArmA was never meant to be a full sequel, and it shows.

many of its issues are obivous but become even more so in comparison with ArmA 2. the campaign for example is really bad. the story is badly told. there are no characters (they are essential for a narrative). the missions are unrealistic and very basic. etc.

ArmA 2 honestly does everything a hundred times better at least. it's a huge improvement in every aspect of the game.

Agreed 100%. Never liked ArmA, ArmA2 is the real sequel of OFP IMHO. ArmA was financially and technically useful for BI, not for me.

I am in the same boat as u but i think lots of stuff will get ported over so i'm sticking with ARMA 2.

ARMA 2 will have everything ARMA did but with alot more extras and better look.

The mods and addons are coming so quick it really looks promising for ARMA2

Just look at the post count on ARMA and then ARMA2. ARMA 2 is obviously going to be more popular http://forums.bistudio.com/index.php since its 2 years behind in release. Already past the half way mark and going strong.

Go for it! :bounce3:

ARMA1 with the last patch is amazing, the campaign has some good missions in it such as

a sniper mission where you have to get to a hotel, take out an officer and get away, theres also another where you get to blow up a bridge =)

but the campaign in general is a bit tedious and unplayable because the AI isn't advanced as in ARMA2, the objectives are quite linear as you are a soldier in an AI's squad so you basically have to stick with your squad.

So if you want to play a good campaign for ARMA buy the 'Queens Gambit' expansion pack or even download a campaign and some mods off ARMAholic.com

The only other problem now however is that the servers might be quite empty, you'll have to find the peak-time where everyone is playing to get a good game.

ARMA1 is great to learn the somewhat complex controls, commanding and some basic mission elements which you might encounter in ARMA2 and the mods are also great.

The rest is amazing! i loved ARMA1 ever since it became properly patched up and the ACE realism mod was also a blast!

also don't worry about performance, if you can play ARMA2 with decent graphics you can play ARMA1 on high settings and a good viewdistance

One thing I love about Arma 1 that I forgot to mention is the Warfare mode. The Arma 2 warfare mode is obviously a more tweaked up version, but the 1.14 patch Arma 1 warfare mode still cracks me up because of the independants. Basically they're set to be hostile to everyone and come out in full force attacking random towns, but they're as thick as mules.

Seriously, you can take out 20 of them before they realise and try to defend themselves by aiming in random directions. It's great fun for a massacre until you run into a real Russian that has a high skill level and while you're mowing down peons then one Russian manages to cripple half your team with a few shots.

It's pretty fun for a bit of a blast.

If you love tanking, then arma1 is still way better then arma2.

The viewdistance is crucial for that and arma2 hasn't fixed it yet.

So tankers are still better off buying arma1.

I enjoyed ArmA 1 but now that I got my new PC and installed ArmA 2, I wouldn't bother with it. After some ArmA 2 urban combat you'll be laughing at ArmA 1's AI.

I found the campaign boring, the missions were basic and lacked any real story.

But it should be really cheap so no harm trying it. The Queens Gambit campaigns were better although I never played them to the end.

I say, I you love the series, get it... Just to have it and to support BIS.

But game-wise I find myself rather playing the Arma1 content in Arma2.

But i was rather cool running Arma 1 again the other day. The performance is several times better. I could max it out and it ran on higher frames than Arma2 have ever showed on any settings. Had like 120FPS in a city.
