Patience is a virtue

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

Theres alot of bad vibes in here about 1.03 and the game in general, and well thats a shame really. BIS seem to be working hard and I am sure there are external (marketing) factors influencing their development cycle. I recall the original OFP which at release was pretty bad and after some patches was amazing. So three cheers for BIS devs, keep up the good work and perhaps in a couple of months we will see what this amazing game engine is really capable of.

I think no one doubts the engine's power, but going backwards instead of forwards, consuming hours and hours of tweaking do tend to make one angry and ventilate. Just take it with a bit of salt, although I know where you're coming from.

Grtz

+1 BIS rock, nobody supports their products like these guys.

...but going backwards instead of forwards

And I don't think we're going backwards, we're just going very slooowly ;)

However this doesnt matter as the game is already superb and easily capable of delivering endless hours of engaging gameplay.... Frankly I have little patience for people with pcs which are 2 or even 3 generations out of date whining that they get low fps in a state-of-the-art game.... like d.u.h. (295 owners are obviously in a different category ;))

I just play now, did all the "tweaking" on 1.02.5, Game runs great. It mostly comes down to the COD disease, thinking you can run this game at 1900/1200 on veryhigh, with a amd3800x2 and a 8600gt......., But the campaign has had its share of fail though.

Some people are in serious pain, mate, and if I would have those troubles while enjoying the otherwise great experience, I'd like to ventilate my anger also somewhere and I don't think the Misses would like to have a beating, because I just waisted 2 hours of my life and it is still worse than before.

Nothing than love for BIS, I'm just saying...

I think it´s other factors leading to the sometimes very bad opinion towards BI´s patch policy &/or development.

Back in the OFP days you could be assured that a patch will indeed make the game better (aside from 1 or 2 patches that broke something, out of 17 or so). The first few patches even gave you new vehicles/weapons/missions to play around with!

Now it feels like they don´t enjoy supporting their game anymore - more like they must fight themselves through to doing it. Many times you find features broken by a patch that were working correctly before. Also from A1 to A2 they seem to have forgotten alot of "learned lessons" - this all does´nt add to customers satisfaction, of course not.

I´m eagerly awaiting the time where A2 hit´s the same level as A1 did with 1.09 - that was the moment when mostly anything got enjoyable.

Second that, and well 1.03 does introduce some issues but they did fix some stuff too, saving/loading in MP campaign sorta works now (perhaps revealing a bug for no server clients when a game is loaded). The bugs are pretty bad too though it has to be said.

The BIS peeps we see in the forums seem really helpful too I thought, adding small features as people request them (an example being the min/max range in the ACM).

I think if you look at the scripts in the game's PBOs you can clearly see evidence of a rushed release (half finished features commented out, the odd 'interesting' comment). I wonder if BIS devs are/were under extreme pressure to beat the competing game due out in a couple of months to market.

I made this post because well I am sure the techies are working really hard on this, prolly still in crunch and tired as hell, so don't give them a hard time I reckon, they are probably working till 8 or 9 and weekends too. Could be wrong.. but it seems likely

Bias I can think of plenty, if bis took some time and effort in the first place it would not need 1 billion patches before its half fixed not that it will ever be fixed.

I think part of it is the game feels unfinished and the attitude of the forum moderators..

This say it all, their motivation seems to be negatively affected.

But I hope that this is just temporary.

Hopefully, the future will get slightly better.

I agree.

The game is excelent, there is no doubt about it. But i find it unnaceptable that a game should need so much work after release to become playable. All i see is an unmotivated dev team, who put together an unfinished, buggy base for a game, and then release it to the public.

Then, after a ridiculously large number of patches, and an extraordinary large amount of mods and addons by the community, the game becomes good.

I love this game so much, but i do feel cheated. In terms of release worthyness, this game is amongst the lowest of the low. But it does partly make up for that with how amazing some of the other features are.

I love BIS, and i love Arma, but i think as customers we are not treated properley. And i think as developers, BIS are as interested in Arma 2 as they were in Arma 1.

Just my take.

Some bugs will celebrate their 10th anniversary of existance in the very near future..

I'm sure we see ArmA III with the same old (legendary?) bugs and an unfinished ArmA II which nobody plays anymore.

I never thought that this would happen to our beloved BI games.

Mmm, this leads me to question... Do they cross bridges by now? Just asking :D (I still don't own the game)

I don't think I've seen any bridges in this game. There are a few dams but they are measured in feet. But I have seen the AI use those.

I can confirm the AI do not use bridges. I tested on the original Arma maps, they try and swim instead...

Then maybe you should start playing the game, there are a couple of bridges at the coast and atleast one between Pustoshka and Vybor. And yes the AI is crossing them without any problems.

Again I can confirm that the AI is using the bridges in ArmA2. The original ArmA1 maps are no official maps but 3rd party imports. So please stop judging the game by using inoffial stuff, thanks.

Ok wolle, don't get so defensive about it though...

Arma 2 has a few small bridges, and from my experience, tanks especially have great difficulties crossing them. They simply go off-road and drive underneath them.

And the AI fail at pathfinding roads to start with, so their ability to drive at all, let alone over bridges is rather bad. AI infantry usually cross bridges in Arma 2, but there is always 1 or 2 who go underneath.

Just judging by what happens in my game, thanks.

Have to agree the game sure did not come out perfect, far from it for some users though I am still confident that given time BIS will fix the majority of bugs etc.

So for now enjoy the game, if not then am sure you can find other stuff in this world for you to enjoy till BIS fix the problems.

That's true, the bridges are pretty small compared to OFP and ArmA1. Bothers me too but probably there's a reason for this. :p

I tried 3 bridges before replying, just to be sure it's still OK in 1.03 (you never know). An infantry squad, a HMMWV and a M1A2 were crossing all 3 bridges with no problems (in Safe mode and column formation). Most probably this will change once they are in combat mode or in another formation.

Pathfinding is a big problem, no doubt. Especially when there is more than one vehicle in a group. A single vehicle has little to none pathfinding problems as far as I can tell. But convoys (once again) are a nightmare and we can only hope that Suma and his gang are fixing this one day.

People piss me off. Short and simple. It is not their 'lack' of information or knowledge. But their unreasonable ignorance and unfair bias towards many things.

I wish their was a better audience for BIS. I respect this one as they (Some) can realize what this game holds over others... But some people are jut unreasonable with their 'expectations,' 'problems,' and flat out disrespect towards a group giving all they have (Yea corny, I know) for this game. (To return after reading what this audiences 'opinions' and 'thoughts' are.) If you really do want what is best for this game, you would relax abit. Patience.

'Mainstream gaming' is apparently affecting the whole of gaming or at least all audiences. Come on, we don't need to act like those COD/BF2/Console Fanboys/etc...

Patience indeed. (It seems most of this audience needs to go look for some.) People piss me off.

Yeah thats it exactly, i completely agree :) As you said, on their own the AI's ability to drive on roads is excelent, but the second there are 2 of them...

I think its down to the way in which they try to avoid eachother, they try way too hard. I remember convoys being awesome in opf 1, i wish they could do the same again.

Rich.

Replying To: Patience is a Virtue

Patience, my ass...lets go out and kill something.

Tweaking the program to get it to run reasonably on your system/any system could be considered additional gameplay in and of itself...instead you have members hand-wringing at every setting change.

____

I'm currently digging it for what it is, wart(hog)s and all...content in the knowledge that BIS is still working the problems, and content in the fact that they will not be able to get them all.

I dont know what you want but, loooooool OFP 1.0 was in a better shape than arma 2, I was Abel to play the whole campaign without a problem, try this on Arma 2, is now on 1.03 and nothing has changed since OFP/Arma 1 only a new graphic thats all, is it so hard to take arma full patched and putt on a the new graphic?

No old bugs every think fine only the few new one?

some of the bugs are back from arma 1 and you talk about OFP shape?Dude, OFP was innovative Arma 1 and 2 arent in OFP you Ai was listening to your commands in arma 2 not.(only one point of many ones)

Arma 2 is a disaster I hade arma 1 and broth it back it´s a catastrophe and I have give BI a second chance but they are adisappointment.I will never buy again a BI product or a product where BI was involved its only screming BUG´S and lie´s!!!!!!!!!

I know how ARMA 3 will look like, some pieces of a code and a note:

"Dear community build what you want their was a shine object in the window

p.s

we have your money pls wait for arma 3 every thing will be fine"

why shood sombady buy arma 3 after the disaters in one and two?

I have paid good mony for a product that has to hold the promises and work proper on the day I buy´d it and NOT ******* 6 up to 12 MONTH´s LATER!!!!

I dont feel cheated, they have stolen my mony. I cant get it back because was was again believing in Bi.

Thx for for Arma 1|1/2 or shod I call it OFP v2.5?:o

I am so ****** after that buy i cant belive it I woud realy like to say good things about BI and the simulator or game or what it is but i cant.

Ther is nothink, just waiting and crying after the mony thrown out the window.

I play OFP/ARMA/ARMA2 because it is the only game like it out there. I doubt OFPDR will give them a run for the money, but I hope they do so it kicks them in the butt to actually do a decent job and make major overhauls and improvements in this engine.

Like another poster said this game series is something like 8 years old, and basically it is really the same game more or less. You would think they would have made huge strides however it is basically a cosmetic overhaul of OFP, I recently played it again to compare and the only difference is pretty graphics. For 10 years of development that is really quite pathetic and I always keep hoping for more.

Like I said I hope another company comes around and beats them at their game so they have some competition to get them motivated to stop doing such an amateurish job and getting things done (did you read the patch notes on 1.03 release, looks like nobody looked over it at all!?)

8 years should be patient enough to work out some of the major problems existent since OFP....sadly not though

Until then ARMA2 is all I've got.

@Paladin: Okay so you haven't tried the demo? You are of an old enough age to call yourself mature and responsible of you own actions? You did buy the game yourself, didn't you?

Everytime the comments about being robbed, and all the money you've spend. I'm probably spoiled or something but 35euros for the only game I need for the next two years isn't any money at all.

I could play OFP and Arma and now ArmA II unpatched but they all really improved A LOT when I did patch them. None of my games did encouter game stopping errors, they all started, they all worked as they should and they only had minor problems. Now that is MY experience, I therefore DO believe BIS should get the praise they deserve since day one when the Virtual Reality engine became a reality itself.

I'm notising a lot of more people bashing around then ever probably because of the better scores ArmAII gotten and more interesting cover art or something? Maybe just good timing with the release date? Dragon Rising creating a good buzz? No idea, but I do notise the same decrease in 'love' in the patch ArmAII just has gotten as ThunderBird remarked in this thread.

I hope we see a brighter future with more regained thrust and a smoother experience for the rest of you who aren't as fortunate at the moment.
