Hi all,

I've asked this question a lot while enjoying MP and came to the conclusion that a lot (if not all) play without grass and default (900 or 1500m) view distance.

Some didn't even know they could set the grass and view distance and others just need the performance or the non abstructive view.

Just in case you can set your grass and view distance in options/settings menu inside Show status (backspace menu) or "T" key.

I like the way grass looks and think is part of beautifull GFX Arma 2 has (compared to Arma 1) but I'm starting to play without it because the enemy AI does not react to the grass at all which puts you in a big disadvantage.

I keep my view distance in SP and MP at 3000m for now.

Thx for your input

I think this poll is not fair. Some servers force the view distance and grass detail so that kinda ruins the point of the poll.

Force?

I haven't met one that does??? What it does is put the grass back to No Grass when you enter the menu (settings/options) again. But it doesn't change your View Distance setting when manualy set.

I still can't figure out how to change this???

I play the superpowers warfare version and my personal grass settings are 'no grass' and like 3000 view distance. But everytime i host a LAN server to play this i got full grass and 2000 view distance.

I remember I tried changing my view distance on the 15th servers and it did nothing at all.

I cannot help you there m8 since I haven't hosted a game yet.

All servers force the same terrain detail and view-distance, unless the mission designer chooses to override it.

Odd, because I can change the Grass & View Distance at any time in any server I have played so far (Domination Coop servers)

Otherwise I wouldn't be posting this poll.

Few servers force it I think... On Evolution, or Domination (hard to keep them apart) you can press T and change it yourself.

Personally, I play with off on any server with coop. If the AI ignore the grass, I do too.

I only play coop missions(my own) and i always have grass on, it would look weird without it.

To make it more even with 'human vs AI' the AI is only allowed to stand or kneel ;)

P.S. i have viewdistance on 10000m.

i can't bring myself to play on servers with the grass off, it's just so god damn ugly... makes the game look like the original OFP !!!

DO NOT WANT !

You are only playing Domination which allows Grass to be changed, you need to change the title to Domination Grass, Not Multiplayer.

Evolution lets you change too.

Just vote for server default if it can't be changed m8, thx.

My graphics card doesnt like this new grass, i get about a 10+ fps hit from it, i use high antialiasing wich doesnt affect frame rate at all but the grass is awfull!

The game feels horrible when the frame rate is at the 20's, also the grass got me killed often.

Picture this... scope lag + grass lag + a.i. that sees thru grass.

Its a big sacrifice for something purely cosmetic.

Normal ArmA2 multi player doesn't allow for player side control of settings like terrain detail and view distance. This is controlled by the server, this restriction can be overwritten by the mission maker using a scripting command. In evolution and domination the mission maker made a way to set it manually with those script commands. I can understand where the confusion comes from since those game modes seem to be the only sort of co-op played ever since they are made.

grass full and view distance to 3000.

I dont like that PPL can turn grass off or they use this stupid add-on that cuts the grass this is cheating. No dont have a super PC but grass is a must. Its evolution from operation flashpoint away.

Better change your topic title to Evolution/Domination. :)

It's really every single custom mp mission maker's decision to force a specific value for his mission, or to let the clients/admin-only select it out of a small list.

Don't know which values are set when the mission didn't force anything. Probably the server settings, but only then.

There server config controls the default view distance and terrain detail when otherwise not altered by the mission's scripts.

I have to bump, there is more to view distance than some of you might have considered, atleast concerning a.i.

Like, at 1500 VD stuff is rendered to about 800 meters, this is bad since the a.i. can see and shoot you while being invisible, this is a bug.

But higher like above 2000 VD is also bad since the netcode cant keep up and you end up with a.i. warping every 5/10 meters or so.

So no matter what.. its always bad :( .

To all of those that complain that turning off grass is cheating, I thought so too but then noticed how retarded the grass is - if you're hiding in the grass you can't see anything but everyone can see you from as far as the object draw distance allows, and same thing if they're laying in grass they can't see anything but you see them just great. Besides, seeing lots of grass right next to you and then looking 50~100m away and seeing no grass is about as ugly as having no grass at all. If grass settings was separate from terrain settings I'd probably turn it off in SP too, at least until a fix is made.

Well, the draw distance thing was originally solved in Arma 1 because the ground would clip up into the soldier from beyond the grass draw distance. This would make any part of the model that should be covered by grass not visible. This doesn't work so well in arma 2 because the grass is much higher but the clipping models are the same amount as in Arma 1
