Why does AA rape the hell out of the game?

Recommended Posts

I can be running at 40 fps on high/highest at 1280x1024 but if I enable even low AA it goes down to the teens. What is the problem with AA that makes it kill performance so much?

I have exactly the same on 1440*900, running evrything on very high, all settings, I turn on AA and it kills my fps to a halt. Really strange, normally it takes a hit, but this is out of contents.

Grtz

What kind of gfx cards are you guys running? and did you force any kind of multi sampling or super sampling in you gfx control panel? if this makes the gfx look for transparency and AA thoes parts too, and it can give a BIG performance hit on older cards.

I have a ATI 4850 512 mb, everything in the control panel is set to application controlled.

They only included AA in the last patch because a lot of people wanted it. I think this is probably why it is not very well optimised yet, however it should have been sorted before they even released the game *sigh*.

Arma 2 looks great in screenshots but is it playable like them = no.

Funny how game performance is the top gripe on everyones list and they release AA support in a patch which kills performance even more. I guess the aa people were screaming louder than the FPS people

^ Nah, it's just easier to add options like AA than to fix performance problems, so don't beat on them for that. They gave us an extra feature and I'm appreciative that they did.

I just had a weird experience with AA. I'm still tweaking the game to best FPS/Quality ratio and thought I had a go with AA.

Here's what happend when I looked through the scope at a hangar:

AA Disabled 31 FPS

AA Low 43 FPS

AA Normal 43 FPS

AA High 43 FPS

AA Very High 41 FPS

AA 5 38 FPS

AA 6 32 FPS

AA 7 35 FPS

AA 8 30 FPS

When looking at other buildings or places the FPS seems to be better when disabled (need more testing)

Hm, that's weird. 4870X2 and AA doesn't really affect framerate @ 1920 x 1200. Even using only one GPU.

I have found that AA on low gives me a 5fps boost when Field Of View is zoomed towards foliage, but 5fps less when Field Of View is normal.

I read that AA isnt working well with ATi cards, thats why..

I have a beaten up 8800 GTX and the game runs bad, i cant even get a decent frame rate with the grass enabled but i can run AA at high with no frame rate impact at all, its like its not even there :) .

Maybe this is because when you're zoomed in you're likely looking at things in the distance, where you'll typically see distant (low res) textures and objects. When you aren't zoomed in the system has to take into account all the closer (higher detail) textures and objects.

I noticed that having Adaptive AA checked totally kills my framerate, I think it AA's the foliage with this option on. It gives a nice quality in where the foliage doesnt appear so sharp but it completely destroys my framerate. If I turn off adpative AA I can get decent frames with ingame AA on medium and fillrate 100%. I'm still not impressed with performance though on a 4870x2 and i7. And that is an understatement.
