Has Anyone Got Queens Gambit?

Shadow NX: I wasn't whining, but making a statement. I also reported you to the mods - no one asked your advice, especially not in the way you <s>barfed it up</s> gave it.

BTW, Royal Flush is somewhat better than the original campaign, but it's nothing special. It's very, very short - took me ~6 hours to play through the whole thing with several reloads.

The arms dealer is a novel idea, but the implementation quickly wears out and I started to find it a boring chore. I'd write more but I don't know how to create hidden text and don't want to spoil it for others.

The characters are ok, but I never felt any attachment that I did with the characters in OFP, but that might be just me.

Because of the reloads, cutscenes are more of a punishment than fun as there is no way to skip most of them. I really, really hate watching the same thing over and over and over and over... you get the point. (At least these are cutscenes, not the cardboard cutouts from the original campaign.)

I also had at least 5-6 bugs in this campaign, but nothing that would prevent playing it.

All in all, someone here said it was reviewed at ~77% and that's about right. Unless you really want it ASAP, wait until the price drops or get it from the cheapest place.

Just to clarify something that might be obvious but some people do not know.

Arma Queen's Gambit is just an addon. It adds two new islands, new units, objects, vehicles etc.

It is not an engine upgrade.

It installs like you would install any normal mod (DBE1 folder) and starts exactly the same way as the mods with -mod=DBE1 on the shortcut.

As such you don't really need to have the exansion to play in non expansion servers and vice versa. You just won't be able to play the maps with the new content. Just like any mod.

Again, because it is not an engine upgrade, like the patches, it will not change anything in your framerates, compatability etc.

I'm still happy paying £14 to download that however i do have to make a comment for the people on tight budget.

The expansion is an addon that the community could have done in a few months should they had all the mod tools earlier. As such i don't think is a good value for money paying for professionally made addons.

From the little i have played it i really liked the campaign royal flush the way it starts...etc. I think this addon is more worth it for the single player aspects of it.

Seriously dude, you better check what is worth reporting or not...

If you got issues or bugs, report them in a solid manner, so BIS can reproduce it and maybe fix it.

BIS never said it would be an upgrade, neither says the webpage, not the press release...

The upgrade will be the 1.09 patch.

QG has always been proposed as a single player addition mostly as the original Arma campaign failed badly.

People moaning about the lack of addons, vehicles in QG should have taken a look at the QG page first. It´s all there, no reason to complain now if you are too lazy to read.

I guess the small island will be used in MP alot as it´s offering a nice scenario for CQ battling with good performance on comps.

does this require the addon cd in the drive to play or do you just run from your arma cd

Works fine with the ArmA DVD. Just got it running, had to reinstall ArmA cause had a *2 install of the game. Don't ask. I like the addons, they are pretty good. As for the campaign, would like to have the time and patience to finish them both, but I like what I see. But looking fwd to what modders can come up with the new models that are with it though.

nothing special tbh, the community did better addons for arma, the campaign is great though and porto is ok too, but a bit small, im missing ships, new buildings, new face models, more civilian cars and no "dead cities", where are all the civilians?

Even then he wouldn't have any right to dismiss it. I do agree that it was a general line, but I did find several bugs in QG (at least a few of them are definitely not ArmA related.) I wanted to descrbed them here, but couldn't figure out how do hidden text. I don't think they can be reported in the bugtracker, since QG is not a BIS product. And BTW, he was already using the same attitude towards others in several other topics. If the mods don't think it's worth a PM for, that's fine.

I agree with others: there were better addons released for ArmA and even for (the supposedly much more limited) OFP. Abandoned Armies, anyone? All in all, it's a reasonable try, nothing special - I do like the new islands and the units and it's a nice thing to have some more SP missions.

And I believe the file version difference might be because of the 1.08-1.08Hotfix differences. There IS a patch after 1.08, but maybe not many know about it. I knew that it's there but don't have it installed.

Seems like a decent addon but isn't Porto kind of small, maybe I didn't read enough, but I guess I was expecting something more along the lines of Nogova from the resistance campaign as opposed to a 3km2 island with a town on it ... and it also seems a bit cheap calling United Sahrani a 'new' island, not that those two islands aren't cool in their own right though.

They always said Porto would be small, it's optimised for MP urban battles which from what I've heard it is. Also I'm yet to see any community made addons and mods that are of the same quality. There may be a few single addons such as an infantry pack here and a weapon pack there, but I'm yet to see any full mods with 1 never mind 2 full blown campaigns, new islands and buildings and the like. It'd take modders a hell of a lot longer to come up with as much with the same sort of quality. Also another thing. Mods aren't as "optimised". Many community made addons use too many poly's or selections and the like, the official stuff is well balanced in terms of details and functionality. With the newer tools coming out though it's more possible and easier to optimise custom addons.

I live in Canada, and have the Atari Combat Operations version of ArmA. If I bought a copy of Queen's Gambit off Ebay, from the UK, would I have any compatibility issues? Downloading is not an option for me, 56k only where I live. I could however got to the in-laws to download it.....but I'd rather pay a little extra for a hardcopy.

I think it should. The 1.08 patch made it "international" so they're all at the same level if you've patched it. The patch comes on the disc anyway I think. I'm sure I read something somewhere stating it works on all versions but I may be wrong.

Well, I just started playing the specop campaing in QG and I really cannot pass this without a comment: who in their right mind (at the devs) thought it's a good idea to have a specop team without a map, a compass and a GPS. (Granted, GPS is just an extra, one could do without it.)

Here is what you see in a specop mission (where stealth and planning is of the essence) when you try to bring up the map:

I don't know if this is a bug or they seriously thought this is right.

I see GPS in the corner. So if you press the GPS button then the GPS map should come up huh.gif

But the mission is on Rahmadi, do you need a map on such a small island? tounge2.gif

Well, there are at least X tanks and Y Shilkas and more that I saw right away, so yes, having a map (and a compass to tell which way I'm looking) would help with planning. And in principle: can you even imagine a planned specop mission where the soldiers are sent ahead without such basic equipment? It's a different matter when the mission is not planned (for example you have to escape from somewhere, etc.)

And the GPS map doesn't seem to come up either.

I didn't write out the numbers to avoid spoiling it for others.

"planned scecop missions"? Dunno about the Hollywood

"specop" soldiers portrayed in Queer's Gambit, but most WW2

commando operations were done without maps. The men

would study and rehearse their roles on sand tables, models

and full-scale mockups. I don't see why that would have

changed. Maps and documents carried into the field can still

compromise OPSEC. So the principle is not all that far fetched

at all.

Hmm, I cannot imagine a geographical map (I'm not asking for enemy positions) and a compass would compromise anything.

And we far surpassed the technological possiblities of WW2, so I don't really see your point there. Along your logic, I could say why even use night vision? In WW2 (or in the 15th century) no one used such a thing.

One more thing: according to your example, in WW2 they had a chance to rehearse (and to learn the layout that they had to infiltrate), but in this mission, nothing is there - you're placed on the island somewhere with a lot of enemies everywhere and good luck. I cannot imagine any sane military leader risking 5 special soldiers like that, when all it'd take is to give them a $10 compass and a map printout.

In this mission I don't even know which way I'm facing, so even if I remember every point of Rahmadi (which I don't and have no intention to), I still wouldn't know where I am, because I have no reference point.

Am I missing something with this mission?

And on the map issue, I think that they never expected to be fighting on that small island and thus didn't make a map. Then again, it IS on the sahrani default map...

Well i had no problems with the first spec-op mission in QG. Not having the map is part of the plot. Rahmadi island was a suprise for the spec-op team. They didn't knew it was there. And they were in a hurry to catch the last enemys. That was explained in the intro.

You sure you are playing the right game if it's that hard to play without the map...? wink_o.gif

Rahmadi isn't that big anyway. So just run/sneak around and you will find the shilkas and tanks easily. Just don't shoot anything until you have a plan. Oh yea and there's AT's at the boat. So that helps with the shilkas.

Anyone have a list of all the addons included? I would at least like the UAZ-469 RECOILLESS RIFLE that was listed in the ARMA instruction book smile_o.gif

Do we get a civi upgrade....females?

Guess it's time to threaten the folks at my local Gamestop to order QG, cause I don't download distribution.

Gamestop wont be able to get it. The US distribution deal hasn't been signed yet. Maybe someone at the store can grab one on the side but GME can not bring in an international version from a corporate level. Your best bet is ebay or wait a few months for Atari to sign a deal.

It's not about being hard, it's about being realistic. In reality you don't lose an island like a keyring. Can you imagine a colonel looking at the map at a briefing and saying "Hmmm.. there is this new island, Rahmadi. When did it get there?" smile_o.gif

Frankly, I don't think I like this mission. I played much better (and free) specop missions before.

Thanks for the info Manz, I still have to get them to think about it though.

They only ordered 2 copies of ARMA at my local GS, which means QG will probably have to be A special order. They said high end PC games are just not in high demand in my area.

A walmart 40 miles away had a stocked shelf of ARMA, and was sold out in a week1/2 so I know there is a demand close by.
