Suitable Photoshop version?

Recommended Posts

There is Photoshop 3.0 ($100), and Photoshop CS ($600).

If I want to do paa editing to change uniform and vehicle skins, which of the above versions are adequate?

I dont want to buy Photoshop 3.0 only find out that I really need CS to make decent skins. However, if Photoshop 3.0 is more than enough for editing, then I will prefer that because of the price.

Suggestions?

I don't think it matters, just get the cheap one and install the paa plugin by Kegetys.

As far as I know Photoshop can't edit paa files by default.

Photoshop is the best name brand to buy though, right? Or is there another one out there that is reccomended over Photoshop?

Personally I would definitively recommend Photoshop for it's extremely wide variety of options and common usage, but I haven't really touched any other professional image editing program so I couldn't really compare it to anything tounge2.gif

Would be better if you choose PS CS or PS CS2 (or new PS CS3) - if you like more than only to "change uniform and vehicle skins" wink_o.gif

THEE most important difference between ps3 and even ps5 is the fact that everything up 'til ps4, if memory serves, does NOT have multiple undos (history).

I could be wrong here because it was a long while back but when I was in college we used ps4. If you made a mistake, you had ONE edit>undo or the 'revert' option which would take you back to a defined state. A major, maaaajor headache to consider.

Photoshop 5 came out with a revolutionary feature known as 'history' - a list of your actions and changes to the file, of which the number of steps can be customised in the photoshop preferences. It allows you to revert to any stage of your session. In my book, it's not worth going without.

The other thing is that the later versions of photoshop come with ImageReady - (sorta like fireworks). This handy thing allows for precise optimization of image files. Need your file to be no larger than say 96kb for a custom face? Well then ImageReady will allow you to optimize the file to precisely what you need.

There's little point buying an old (pre-5.0) version of Photoshop because The GIMP basically does everything they do for free. Newer versions of PS have useful tools such as Liquify and Heal which GIMP lacks though. The GIMP is perfectly adequate for most editing, if you can get over its user interface.

Maybe GIMP is worth a try as well, since it's free. I have no idea if it supports what you're looking for, though, but since it's free you can always install it and try.
