Community Need: Universal Website for resources.

Recommended Posts

I remember when all I needed was: OFP.info for Addons. Ofpec.com for editing help. And the official forums for community "know how".

Now it seems as if everything is scattered everywhere.

Ofpec has no "Arma" section, the tutorials are all outdated, and 1/2 the code in those tutorials don't work (+ many are poorly translated into english).

ArmedAssault.info doesn't host addons/maps/missions/wallpapers.

Bis's official forums have addons scattered everywhere in different posts in different threads, all linking to websites no one has been to before..

If this community is to grow, I think we need these united resources once again.. Otherwise, the modding community that made OFP so great will fall apart quicker than you can say "Damn, 1 is down".

Correct me if I'm wrong.. but I think something has to happen soon.. We can't have 1000 websites for addon makers to upload their addons. Most people will not search those 1000 websites for any ol' addon. Thus, in summation, the community won't thrive as it once did.

For tutorials we have the biki, as soon as some more people contribute there... wink_o.gif

armed-assault.de is hosting every addon, armedassault.eu also... wink_o.gif

Biki eh? I will check it out (link?). Hopefully most, if not all addon makers will. I'd hate to see the community segregated to dozens of websites.Does Biki locate other addons from other websites and mirror them? Or just what users upload?

Armedassault.eu... their download section contains: Missions (0), Movies (18), Other (1) <- Just a press kit, and Patches (0). First off, there has been a patch out, actually more than one if you include server patches. Their downloads section lacks an area for addons. And by now there aught to be a few missions out there with the 1000s of people playing... As far as I'm concerned.. besides their news, I don't find the website that appealing.

Ofpec said they would create an ArmA section a few months ago.. seems that the spokesperson was wrong sad_o.gif -- I'll check out this 'biki'.

Edit: What about the newer things: Video Tutorials (I've seen a couple). Movie Making Guides, Pamplets, Paperbacks, Books, Misc programs: Kegetys stuff, Language changer.. Theres dozens of servers hosting this stuff, but unless you read it in a thread the moment it was put on (before the thread died), you may never know it existed.

Hello,

As the community (for Arma) grows, many websites will come and go and eventually will settle down, so you will know where to go.

In the meantime there are quite a few decent sites out there with various missions/addons, and like most site, will mirror eachother for content.

So dont fret too much.

We are just going through the same growing process as OFP did.

The chaff will soon be sorted from the wheat.

Google can also be your friend for locating stuff.

Rgds

Like Denz points out, yes there is ArmA section at OFPEC.

The turorials are not outdated, they work for OFP, and as you might imagine changes made in ArmA of course render most of those useless for ArmA...

Same goes for the scripts..

As for poor translations, well, there is a large part of the world where english is not anyones first or even second language (as you can see from this sentence english is not my 1st language either)..

You are very welcome to join the OFPEC staff to proof read any upcoming resources if it bothers you that much wink_o.gif

I don't know how exactly you expect there to be whopping amount of resources for ArmA when a big part of the community has received ArmA like 2 weeks ago.. icon_rolleyes.gif

Things have to be learned and discovered first until they can be taught to others..

Please understand that I'm not trying to flame you or anything like that, it's just the slight odor of ignorance in that quote that caught my attention..

I'm currently revamping my old OFP editing/map site.

I am planning to set up a site that is dedicated to Armed Assault editing. The goal is to offer realistic maps that are as close to "real" combat operations. Additionally I would like to offer editing tools for Arma, such as scripts, tools and especially tutorials on editing.

Having said that, I'd love to have people send me their maps/scripts/tools and of course suggestions and criticism.

www.spear-head.org/ofp

I only started to re-work the site, but I'll have the main sections up and running by this weekend.

So - if you have Armed Assault editing resources you think the community should have access to, feel free to contact me and I'll add them to the site.

The forum has got to wait another month or two though, since I curently don't have a mySQL server, after that there will be a forum dedicated to editing as well. smile_o.gif
