Codemasters still working on OFP2

Recommended Posts

Now that Unreal 3 engine is coming out, the ARMA engine is getting quite obsolete in terms of what it can deliver (other than massive maps, which by the way are useless in MP games since you play in a limited field anyway)

Yes and the neat (and one of the most played modes in MP) CTI uses a shitsmall area...how big is the area usually? Yeah, that's right, about the whole island yay.gif

Why do you guys act as if BIS is the only company in the world that can pull off an OFP like game. Heck, OFP isn't even impressive anymore compare to other games.

Ofcourse thats the case. OFP is nearly 6 years old (the engine its self is even older). Its called PROGRESS...

That was true back in the day, but not anymore. Take a look at WW2 online for example.

Theres also a D-day game in the making (was also a HL2 mod)

You mean the WW2 Online that looks similar gfx wise to OFP? (infact, I'd be tempted to say it looks worse. Sure its got higher res textures, but the models confused_o.gif )

And the HL2 mod (Day of Defeat maybe?) which is essentially a corridor shooter?

Sure there are games out there comparable to OFP/ArmA, but I've yet to find anything that offers the same sandbox all-round capability of the BI games. Which is why I'm still playing them. Yes, there are plenty of games which offer better city/CQB fighting, yes there are games which offer better flight models, yes there are games which offer better tank sim. I've yet to find another one which does all of it tho.

People said the same think at the Doom3 engine without knowing anything. And look it at now, it runs enemy territory quake wars on maps that are consider pretty big for the level of graphics and the type of gameplay.

Is this the same Quake Wars which boasts maps sizes of "1 Square Mile"? (taken from Their site) Sure its impressive for the quake engine, but 2.5km^2 verses 400km^2....

Your all pretty naive to think that BIS is the only one in the world to achieve something like ofp, especially since were talking about the future here.

Like Messiah said, thank god we have you to show us how wrong we are. icon_rolleyes.gif

But seriosuly; find some other games which are out NOW (I like to play my games now, you know in that time called "The Present" and not drool over games which wont be out for 2 years or so. So find some games which aren't dx10 techdemos like Crysis or Alan Wake, which offer the same map size, object detail and AI count at ArmA and we wont dispute it. For the time being tho, there simply isnt anything that even remotely compares...

Also, could you look into that crystal ball of yours and tell me next week's lotto numbers please wink_o.gif

Now that Unreal 3 engine is coming out, the ARMA engine is getting quite obsolete in terms of what it can deliver (other than massive maps, which by the way are useless in MP games since you play in a limited field anyway)

A red orchestra like game on the Unreal 3 engine with air and sea vehicles (which is possible), and 5x maps (which is also possible), would pretty much be above arma in anything other than super large maps (which as I stated above, don't offer much to gameplay since you play in a limited field by default.)

Never played CTI then? Not played other missions like Fer's Treasure Hunt? Or the Lojack missions? Or even a decent tank battle. Hell, real world tank battles take place over terrain 10 times the size of any of the games you listed can offer. Whoop-de-do, ArmA might not have the latest and greatest pixel shaders or whatever other crap you get happy over. But personally I think it looks damn good, and it offers a terrain size large enough to offer some seriously varied mission types, other than the pretty standard CTF that pretty much every other online shooter offers...

Why limit youself to playing in a shoebox just because thats what every other game is doing?

I believe he is referring to this. Personally I think it's just a load of hype.

No doubt about that. No offense to them or anything, but all that they listed kind of seems way to unrealistic. Unless they have been working on it rigorously for the past couple of years without the release of any news or media.

So thats another name for those small-area type games? Corridor? Makes some sense.

This is one of the things I hated most about the fiasco joe public multiplayer games turned into. CTF maps in flashpoint are perhaps the greatest waste of possibilities and worst living testament to lack of imagination in living memory.

For me anyway it was, and still is one of the lowest points in the game's history and shows just how important gameplay really is especially when compared to quick thrills.

I've mentioned it before, but if you want to see the true power of awesome gameplay crushing cheap graphical thrills under its feet then have a go at Battleground Europe, even if you only play it for the 14 day free trial it's worth the experience thumbs-up.gif

I think you should talk to a couple retards whose posts I've read in the Arma forum complaining about how their DM and CTF is now ruined in Arma. Co-op is the only MP I ever really played, everything else is just silly. If I wanted to play CTF I can do that outside playing paintball. Sitting 10 km in the bush calling in a player controlled airstrike on an ai controlled motorized infantry company, now that is something that sets this game apart and is what makes this game so special. Everything else is just silly gaming.

This may be slightly off-topic, but you should really try playing a nice, large-scale PvP on Zeus. Essentially, it's coops with human opponents. What else could you wish for?

So you aren't a fan of ROFLCOPTER deathmatch? sad_o.gif

Haha.

No smile_o.gif

I'm content to play SP in my own little world and be happy rather than go online and be totally disappointed.

Not that a ROFLCOPTER Deathmatch wouldn't be fun though. It might be the funniest thing I've ever seen.

About that Zeus server. It would be fun only if it were played out as a re-enactment or with most people playing as a team. Maybe they do...

The most enjoyable MP I ever had was Coop with BAS, DM with Earl, Suchy, Hellfish etc testing the Marine pack, and a Coop session while testing Combat VBS addons. Those gaming experiences were each totally different, but they just hooked you. After those times I'd rather not play than go on a public server and feel frustrated like I did when I tried to enjoy BF2 for a couple days.

They do indeed. Again, I'm sorry for hijacking this thread to pimp Zeus, but I just need to say this. Ebud, I felt exactly the same way as you about MP gaming, especially on public servers. THat is, until I ran into Zeus a few months ago. While it's open for everyone, the Zeus gaming nights are usually attended by a close-knit group of regulars, who know how to cooperate, communicate, obey the CO etc.

The Zeus server features realistic scenario's on a big scale, usually at least on platoon or company level. This is achieved by having the human players control AI squads. Throw in WGL 5.1 and CoC arty, and you have SP-scale engagements with intelligent (well, usually wink_o.gif ) human opponents. No DM's or CTF's, but realistic scenario's like capturing & holding key locations, destroying enemy assets, convoy escort, assassinations, etc.

Zeus = realism + fun. Check this thread for details.

Now, to get back on-topic. I don't see why another company wouldn't be capable of developing a game which could rival OFP/ArmA. Obviously the people at BIS are very talented, but that isn't their core 'competitive advantage', to use a BA term. There are many talented people out there. What seperates BIS from other companies, is the willingness to create a game which doesn't conform to the rather poor standards set by the gaming industry. Less complex shooters generally sell better, but BIS consciously chose to make a niche game. This is commendable, and rather unique.

Of course, I haven't played ArmA yet... Some people claim that is has been dumbed down, but that's a whole different discussion smile_o.gif

Regards,

Xawery

Why do you guys brag about 400 sq km maps when most missions (coop, ctf, dm, etc etc) take place on less than 5 sq km. Even CTI's don't take the whole map.

Your acting as if in one mission your playing on every sq inch of the map.

And about CTI, to actually enjoy it, you need to play it with a good group of people. And because of JIP, that will be harder and harder to find.

Oh God, not you again icon_rolleyes.gif

I enjoy large maps because over the last 6 months or so the only missions I really played were DMA Dynamic campaign missions where you actually used the entire map.

It's all about the freedom to choose. In games like GRAW you have no choice. I love that game, but games like that are so limited in scope it isn't funny.

If its half the good its been OFP then it will be a good game.

To that egocentric brat calling retards those who play CTFS... welll instead of that i suggest you call yourself a tard instead of bashing others opinions.

The fact that you cant enjoy CTf or dont know how to doesnt mean its silly gaming. It only means you are very narrow minded.

Yes, I'm very close minded, and an egocentric brat. icon_rolleyes.gif

I wasn't speaking of everyone who plays CTF, only those bitching and whining about how their CTF gaming seemed to be taking a backseat to CO-OP for some reason. It stongly feel that CTF is the worst possible use of this game. It's like buying a Porsche to drive to pickup your mail. You can play CTF in every single other FPS out there, why the hell someone would want to water down what this sim can do to play CTF I'll never understand. This really is the only good game I can think of with strong CO-OP possibilities. You can play CTF with any game sad_o.gif

I had to dig out an old hard disk to prove it - but Codemasters already mailed me EXACTLY the same mail around two years back, when asked about OFP II

It's one god damn template !! lol

Of course there more games for CTF but this people i guess, would like to play the game they love ( or his second part ) also in CTf mode.

Well i guess those people didnt have legit complaints untill i saw this:

http://www.flashpoint1985.com/temp/ArmA.jpg

For me they went through the uber realistic way and that is gonna always revert in a decrease in playability for the general public. So i can understand those who complain about their CTFs being fucked up.

OFp was perfect in that sense, perfect at the time for coops and with good map editing skills perfect at CTF.

hell, Bis did a great job with CTF everon for example...

Plus you dont have to take back a step in simulation by playing CTF´s, just because you have to cap a flag instead of capturing a building for example doesnt convert it into something less sim.

For example Urban Combat with this pilosophy has just been fucked up.

Supressive fire is non existant and taking cover in a fast way is just not an option.

I as you agree CTfs shouldnt get over coops but also i think Coops should not get over CTf´s...

Anyhow and as to staying on topic i bet Codemasters will know that.

They can be really stupid with their merchandising, their starforce policy and all that... but at least they would have done a better job with arma in that balance between modes factor.
