i think too many games these days have the US army in them.. it gets gay after a while.. an european force could be good beciase you could make an great story with just that.. take for example "Tom Clancys, 'Red Storm Rising'"

How about everyone doesn't claim their own country's armies the best in the world? I could just as well have said Finland, we (or well, the soldiers of the time) quite well kicked Soviet ass in 1939, and even captured Petroskoi in 1941. Quite well for a military with a fragment of men and resources compared to it's enemy, eh?

As it seems there is no chance to avoid US being in (the game wouldn't sell enough in the US if they weren't there) I'd suggest the civil war of an African country, a bit like BAS Tonal actually. But mid-90's Serbia - as I mentioned earlier - would be an interesting theme too I think.

me personally am quite happy with a made up sceanario, i think its better. First it dosnt dig up sensitive areas, and secondly it allows the makers to be more creative.

North Korea invades South Korea, play as ROK soldier for some time. US has allowed readiness to slacken in that part of the world, so it takes a while for them to join. As soon as US commits to Korea, China (who was using DPRK as a puppet all along) invades Taiwan. China has all kinds of military technology it has stolen from the west so is now advanced as well as huge. US tries to back that up too, but gets spread too thin. Now DPRK and PRC threatening Japan. Japan and US and maybe some others build up and retake the invaded nations then continue on to take out the people that started the war. Maybe you could bring in some other nations on the side of china because they don't want to lose them as a trading partner.

wow, maybe i'll write a book about that someday...

or another idea would be that after being humiliated in a series of small conflicts, America allows itself to get soft and the military gets extremely weak. Then we get invaded and you fight on the streets of american cities. fighting in the suburbs with soccer moms driving by in their minivans. that would be insane.

The "modern" environment is such a dismal setting for an FPS storyline, other than Tom Clancy-type shooters.

I just read yesterday that china has 200 million people between the ages of 15 and 24. They've also stepped up modernizing their military recently. Makes them a prime candidate in my mind.

They could mobilize 2 million troops in moments me hear. Plus that if they'd take all the reservists, say, from 18 to 60, well, if an US soldier would match 5 of 'em, they'd propably still win.

France, UK, US and Germany's modern day tanks have always been considered an equal tie. The US has, for the longest time, spent the most money on its military and its technologies. "The United States military budget is larger than the military budgets of the next twenty largest spenders combined, and six times larger than China's, which places second". Right now the US is in the middle of a huge change, especially in technology. Since our technology was some of the worlds best, think of what a big change will bring. Also, the US technology is the most used around the world as many other militarys have adopted our stuff. M1311, F-16, Humvees and M-4s to name a few.
