Demo's out!

Here

I like the animations and effects, and the AI (though some of the old facing problems with some individual soldiers: "the enemy is that way!")

But it's another quashing of my wish for an RTS with the correct number of soldiers: last time I checked, there were 13 men in an parachute infantry squad, not CoH's six. Oh well.

I played the demo, and I'd say it was pretty good. My main bug was with the population limits in skirmish mode, which were set far too low for my taste. I suppose that the level of tanks was appropriate for the size of the map, but I definitely think that the limit should be raised on infantry. And some base defenses (Here I am thinking of the Flak 88) consume huge amounts of population units, meaning that building even one or two of these severely limits remaining production.

The units balanced pretty well, the Germans have superior armor and the Americans have superior riflemen. American riflemen can be upgraded with BARs, sticky bombs, and grenades (They can carry all three at once). The Germans get Volksgrenadiers, which carry rifles which can be upgraded to MP40s. They do carry Panzerfausts, making them OK against light armor, but they lose quickly against BAR-equipped American riflemen. The Germans get better heavy infantry in the form of grenadiers, 4-man squads that start out with Stg44s and Mausers. They can be upgraded with two heavy weapons: Panzershreks and/or light MG42s, in any combination you see fit. Both sides get snipers, machinegun teams, mortar teams, and engineers (They act as the construction vehicles in the game).

German tanks are superior to the American alternatives, and usually send the Yanks running away in terror (One consequence of the population limit is that American players will have a bitch of a time getting winnable armor ratios). One Tiger or Panther can quickly make a mess out of several Shermans. However, a German commander can only get a Tiger by selecting a certain command doctrine (Like a small, seperate tech tree) and buying it with XP points. Both sides get some armored cars and AAA vehicles too.

Graphics are awesome, and there's a neat camera feature that lets you freely move the camera, even down to ground level. You can get an excellent idea of what each unit can see/shoot using this tool. All models look very good even at point blank range.

I found the gameplay to be pretty easy. You earn XP points by building units or killing enemy units, and you use those points to buy cards giving you various types of upgrades/reinforcements/support. You have an economy based on three resources: Manpower, fuel, and munitions. You earn these by capturing points on the battlefield, and capturing new sectors also increases your population limit. The gameplay is more bloody than in many RTSs I've played, as the AI can be very aggressive and will put constant pressure on you. The number of machineguns, mortars, AT guns, and artillery on the battlefield virtually assures a great deal of casualties, even for a good player.

It sounds interesting. How does it play compared to Soldiers/Faces of War?

I really like the micro-management in Soldiers. How is that in CoH?

I have played only the multiplayer demo of CoH but as far as I see it's warhammer: dawn of war with germans replacing orcs so no micromanaging here.

MOHA - Everyone has Wall Hacks/ESP, bad graphics

COD1 - Good Competition Game - CPL, WSVG LANS

COD2 - Graphics Awesome - Still Needs work for competition.

Brothers In Arms - Terrible Game for competition - bad graphics

I won't be buying COH due to BF2 1.4 and COD2 competition teams I am on. No time for it and a life.

Isnt it a little odd to compare a real time strategy game to first person shooters? crazy_o.gif

I think I've tried all the key combinations that I'm aware of: CTRL + #s, SHIFT + #s, CTRL or SHIFT + left clicking, etc.....Is it possible to group my squads into one big "platoon"? whistle.gif

Well as its ok to talk about games I will bump a thread thats from 2006 :)

I just got this game as "Gold" from Game downloads, well I realy did miss something, what a great little game to work with. 14.99 for download, if anyone hasn't tried it then if you like RTS that wont kill your system but graphics are still great then give it a go.

Spent 1 hour and 30 mins on 1 map trying to annihilate AI in a skirmish, love the fact it can replay the entire battle. I haven't realy stepped into the world of RTS but I can see the appeal (in fact Arma2/High command & Warfare got me looking).

It may seem old but for me I wasn't realy noticing any "age" to it, with both expansions (the third seems not worth it) Panzer elite it a blast. World in conflict might be next for me, but I like the smaller skale skirmish side to this, like I like my Arma 2 to be :) Love the snipers.

I recommend Blitzkrieg mod for CoH if You want more realistic gameplay. Really great stuff.

Until I moved to Men Of War (even greater and more realistic RTS) game, CoH & BK mod gave me many sleepless nights.

I still hit original CoH up weekly - it may not be the most realistic RTS around, but it's easy to get into and shloads of fun, especially when the opposition starts complaining about you artying their base during the endgame.

Thanks I have scoped out all the mods and addons, I want to get used to things first. Found that nice autohotkey tool too so I could bind WASD and use mouse buttons 4/5 for reverting back to normal view and panning, much better

I have had a bit of a time grabbing bargain price games that are not hardcore sims, but addictive to play and this did the trick perfectly, Arma is my hardcore sim only :)

I will check out the more realistic game play mods as soon as I get the hand of things, so far I have only played 2 main skirmishes, no campaigns or online yet. Its one of those games that before you know it 30 mins seems like 5.

EDIT ... just checked that mod you mentioned, didn't see that ... 1 gig of goodness, that ones getting nabbed right away, love it. Love the fact that its been out for some time so there's so much to choose from. Cheers mate.

Aargh, arty noob! :D

I still love to play CoH, I think the units are well designed in rock-paper-scissors style, for a unit there's always a varyiety of counter-units. The graphics, sounds and physics are still very nice and up to todays standards for an RTS game. And the ranking system is an addictive element. The best part of CoH is however that it's fast paced game from the first second and you have to be very offensive and look for the weak spots in enemy lines or otherwise you get pwned within minutes. I always play it for a good jolt of action and tactics once in a while.

I agree about sound & physics, nothing seems dated, since installing the HD skins addon with Blitzkrieg its up to par again.

Yes I have been a bit slow to work this out when starting, not long before tanks are at my base and im thinking ... hmmm, ok, need to read up about tactics more. Im getting the hang of it now with the quick key tutorials for stacking orders and quick commands for engineers etc.

I started to seek out tutorial videos, tips etc ... I stumbled over this "help" video ... I laughed very hard, clearly he's a vet at the game and has no concept of real "help" at all ... seems like a show in late night mass coffee and red bull sessions and thought "hmmm while im here I will make a video" ... im thinking the next day he might have thought about how the video came across

All things considered, after learning more, looking at tips, getting to grips more, grabbing Blitzkrieg certainly a long term keeper for me, not bad for 14.99 Gold edition.
