Will there be railways in ARMA?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone know if BIS is planning on implementing working railways in ARMA a bit like AEF Trains in OFP by the AEF-Kampagne.  wink_o.gif  Or will they just be making support for such a mod more compatible with the new game engine?

I rather liked that train addon in OFP by AEF, except that it never really works properly on most maps (usually gets stuck somewhere and AI is useless at using it!wink_o.gif

I think that properly working trains could add a lot to gameplay if it is properly done, and would make some missions much more challenging and interesting! Also it would be fun just to take a relaxing tour around a new island!  biggrin_o.gif

@ Dec. 31 2005,19:03)]AEF WILL BE BACK IF NOT smile_o.gif

That's great to hear!  smile_o.gif

Let's hope they make it easyer for U this time though! Or maybee there will be a whole shed load of stuff just waiting to roll out the engine shed - straight out of the box!  inlove.gif

And yea viaducts were made for railways, I did see the pictures in the teaser but I did not see a railway or any rolling stock. Maybee in the next teaser!

Imagine the thrill of blowing up an enemy supply train as it croses a bridge and watching it fall into a river with it's supply of armoured vehicles!  biggrin_o.gif

The only bridge I saw in the trailer was a road bridge.

I would like to see trains. Whole scenarios could be built around them from spec op missions to destroy sections of track, to the logistics of moving troops and armour to the front line.

In OFP there is very little static infrastructure which can be destroyed. Petrol stations, bridges and radio masts are the only things which come to mind. The more realistic infrastructure, the better for varied missions and immersion. xmas_o.gif

I think we will only see the destructable environment in the true sequel. But here's hoping we'll get some cool advanced features in AA.

whooa trains in Armed assault.. wow_o.gifbiggrin_o.gif

dunno but if we can have little movement inside cargo or passenger wagons maybe there can be some fun mp or sp missions featuring take over the train type of mission for resistance or Sf guys or so smile_o.gif Even if its not possible to move inside trains out of the box maybe mods will figure it out sometime how to do it smile_o.gif

I really doubt that ArmA will include trains. The islands are just too small for a railroad network, so adding them wouldn't be realistic anyway. If a small island still has a railroad it's most likely something industrial.

Of course it would be cool but there are other things which have a higher priority.

Too small? If OFP islands are big enough for the AEF train addon I'm sure that the new island in ARMA is gonna be much more suitable - what with streaming terain & a 200km square island?

Plus I'm sure that BIS is well aware of the vast modding comunity around OFP and would like to keep all options open!  wink_o.gif

I hope so anyhow!  huh.gif

Of course there's enough physical room to place railroad track on a 200km square island, but why?  Is it really necessary to have three locomotives and 70 cars to haul items 10km?  Or to book passage on a train for a 5 minute train ride?  It's not that there's not enough room for railroad track, but that they are not practical on an island of such size.  Why not transport items by trucks?  Are there really thousands of tons of cargo that must be moved around an island daily?  Trains are expensive to operate. It's like piling into the family car to drive 35 meters to your next-door neighbor.  You can do it, but why?

Remember, it is a game. And it is nice to destroy something else then that old convoy of 3 trucks, 1 t72 and a bmp. wink_o.gif

Why three engines and seventy car? One engine and two to ten cars would be appropriate in scale for a small local railway. In would also run at least 20km if placed across the new island (400km sq +). The journey would also take more than 5 minutes with stops in between the ends of the line.

The train could run in a loop around the coast. Like some existing trains already do on islands of this size! In this case assuming an exact circle with radius of 10 km this would create a 62km track.

The smallest railway in the UK is only about 1-200 metres, it ferries passangers between the ferry dock and the mainland on the Isle of Wight (Island on the south coast). In Kuala Lumpur aiport there is a railway which carries passengers less than 1km from one terminal to another. Not to mention light railway and underground systems which operate in large towns and small cities around the world!

If we really needed to further justify a railway on Sara then perhaps it could run from the main large port/harbour area round the coast to a city and industrial area on the far side of the island?

I consider a train as a really cool tactical tool. You can move troops fast from a to be, do some good undercover missions and so on.

It's a pity, that the OFP Ai didn't suppot a train, as some of you have noticed when you were playing around with the AEF train.

I have many ideas concerning this topic and I really hope, that BIS will make include trains in ArmA. smile_o.gif

([Advertisment on]If you play Phoenix Island, you will notice that moving by train is much faster, than moving by car wink_o.gif [advertisment off])

There was a nice (if short) delta force 2 mission that basically involved being at a particular spot on the train track to lay mines and get in position before the train arived. Any delay and you missed the train. Then it was a case of mowing down the guards and perhaps a gunship (something like that, my memory is sketchy). Im probably remembering it through rose-timted glasses though DF2 kept me entertained for a bit.

just to add, remember countries such as Greneda are about the same size as flashpoint islands, and they have trains running around the sugar plantations.

snowdonia has one which goes up to the top of mount snowdon

trains serve other purpouses that people transport - industrial uses spring to mind - and as was said, a train would prove a great mission concept

Well, if BIS are to place railroad on one or more islands they have to create something that makes the trains useful. Only chance for a passager train to be useful was if the island would be if there were a lot of tourists there. I mean, the town I live in, 60 000 ppl, bigger than 400 square km, and there's only 1 train station here, but no railroad crazy_o.gif We take bus. That's what would be most natural for a island on that size too. Unless there's a lot of tourists coming there, or if they got some sort of industry or something that needs trains. Having a train going around in circle just for the people on the island would be burning money crazy_o.gif

Isle of Mans 572km2 and thats got a train network on it. Who cares if its "impractical." Add a nice bit of atmosphere and lead to missions where you attack armed trains with planes smile_o.gif

It may be impractical to have a real sized railway, but has anyone ever heard of narrow guage railways which are prevalent across much of the developing world, i.e. where "Flashpoints" occur? A narrow guage railway, whilst not only being suited to a smallish island, would also be more realistic.
