tsalagikola 0 Posted December 13, 2005 Can i just ask, why? Why must ofp have these units? Because we need these to kill the Romans with Look here for Romans Just like the some of my family did!!!!! LOL THATS WHY Ragnar Lodbrok Sigurdsson  born:   died:   who led the sack of Paris in 845. According to legend, his nickname (which means "leather breeches") came from the type of armor he wore when he went to slay a dragon.  He died when he was captured by the Northumbrian king Aelle and cast into a pit of adders, whereupon he spoke the poem "Ragnar's Death-Song", heroically greeting his death. His sons, led by Ivan the Boneless, cut the blood-eagle on Aelle and took a large part of his territory.  Genseric, "the Rod of God", King of the Vandals in Spain  born: 428  died: 477  He invaded Africa and conquered Carthage in 437; he plundered Rome in 456. He married (2) Eudoxia the Elder, widow of  Valentinian III, whom in battle he captured with her daughter, Eudoxia. He married the younger Eudoxia  to his son  and had a child. Clovis inherited his father's kingdom in 481, at which time he unified the Salian and Ripurian Franks. In 486 he defeated the Roman general Syagrius who ruled northern Gaul out of Soissons. By 493 he married the Burgundian princess Clotilda. In 496, after defeating the Alamanni, he was baptized, thus becoming the first Christian ruler of post-Roman Gaul. By 506 the Alamanni were subdued, and the next year Clovis finished his expansion by taking Aquitaine from the weak Visigothic king Alaric II. On Clovis' death in 511, the kingdom was split between Chlodomer (Orleans), Childebert (Paris), Chlotar (Soissons), and Theuderic (Metz).
philcommando 0 Posted December 13, 2005 Quote[/b] ]Can i just ask, why? Why must ofp have these units? Sure u can.1. Ofp is a popular game and has a large community. Currently, there is no other game like it in that one can mod it anyway one wants. It can be a RPG or FPS. What better way for students to learn from the mistakes of our ancestors than actively be part of it in a fun way? The progress of civilisation had always ride on the coattails of conquest anyway. History often repeats itself and those who refuse to learn from it are doomed to repeat it. 2. In war, bullets and arrows has no name. Many an ofp player will realize this within minutes, no matter rich or poor, young or old, grunt or SF. Ofp teaches you the hell of war. No game can ever match the physical realities of the battlefield, but ofp comes closest to matching the mental pressures one faces. Play one mission on the latest offering by the great UNSUNG mod and you will realize this, amongst many other great mods who offers such, too many for me to list here, historical or present or futuristic. The best one can do is replay it and mentally prepare yourself not to make the same mistakes and hope for the best. The irony of war is that it is people who love peace who goes to war, for they defend what they believe is worth defending. 3. Some of the ofp young today will become journalist or leaders covering battlefields one day. What better way than to play the game for an insight to a grunt's mentality in the battlefield to cover the battlefield from a grunt's perspective? 4. We wont know with what weapons WW III will be fought with, but we do know for sure WW 4 will be fought with sticks, rods and stones. Good to prepare for anything. 5. It will not bode well if the young begins life with a close mind for the future of mankind lies in their hands, insignicant though they think themselves to be. Each one matters in the survival of the human race. Many laffed at Asimov, a visionary open minded young man then when he wrote about satellites in fiction but i am sure Osama and his thugs aint laffing now as they get picked off one after another by communications half a world away. Point is, i never encouged anyone to download my addons. Its lousy, i know, but i am the product of the great visionary pioneers of ofp over the years who made the game what it is today, from Zwarda's chair to Col Klink crafts and many other historical, present and futuristic pioneers, and only continuing their dreams for ofp. Have fun

somebloke 0 Posted December 13, 2005 Well apart from using quotes from Albert Einstein and various other significant past figures, that hasn't answered my question. But, no need, as i have answered it myself.
AEA 0 Posted December 13, 2005 I couldn't understand why you start this conversation somebloke. Your Post sounds a bit egoistic. there are other people who LIKE the idea. and if you tell "why?" Then they can tell you "why not?" I,m a Fan of the Ancient World scenery and the Medieval, so I will enjoy Mods in this time which will following this one. And if you don't... then just play other Mods.
stu 0 Posted December 13, 2005 That some fantastic work i'm haveing alot of fun with them perhaps give the woman warriors an axe and theyd look just like the screaming woman from RTW Â Again great work Quote[/b] ]somebloke Posted on Dec. 12 2005,20:35-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Can i just ask, why? Why must ofp have these units? So we should all just stick with the same theme? that would be abit boring would it not?
Placebo 29 Posted December 13, 2005 Can i just ask, why? Why must ofp have these units? Because it's possible? Seems a good enough reason to me
philcommando 0 Posted December 14, 2005 Hey, thanks guys for the support. If not for kind folks like you, ofp would not have been what it is today. Stu, glad u like em. I am sure you would like the newer ones that had been reworked..puts u in the front seat of any battle. This thread is actually put up to support you, for i admire dedicated guys like u who against all odds, put in the efforts to create a whole new world. Seems like there are many who would wanna see your efforts in OFP. Dont give up and i hope a few more guys will chip in to help you out in your mod, to create a whole new world now not only for adults war game, but millions of students all over the world for historical lessons which Rome total war had been doing. My only grouse with that game is that wars may be fought with armies, but it is men who start it and ofp does goes down to the personal level to help students get an insight to the motivations and fears of war. History lessons will never be the same again with ofp. Right now, another challenge that you will face will be the machines of ancient warfare. I had done a test low quality textured model of a catapult configured to hit soldiers and other machines and amazingly, it works with ofp1 engine. These are the ingame pics. The catapult with a fire tar and pitch rock at ready:- The catapult fires:- ( less than a second anim) The catapult drops back down:- ( within 2 secs) The tar and pitch rock is ready at the steel netting for the next shots:- ( within 1 sec) The catapult with a fire tar and pitch rock at ready:- All these is done easily using only rotation axis anims and a matter of timing, nothing complicated or fanciful. Again ofp1 engine has shown its dexterity and flexibility. Battling rams, onagers, etc is fully possible! I now even have a choice of either using slaves or horses anim to move these machines.... Hail Marek!!!! Â Once i have touched up these addons and release it, it would end my contribution and may this thread die as yours move here and i move on to the next challenge that has been difficult to overcome:- real underwater action/diving! ITS POSSIBLE! Â
somebloke 0 Posted December 14, 2005 I'm not trying to sound egoistic, i enjoy creativity and imaginitive addons. But, it just struck as slightly odd, why we have barbarians.
crassus 0 Posted December 14, 2005 Quote[/b] ]Can i just ask, why? Why must ofp have these units? Then you perhaps missed the Legowars Mod from waaaay back when.

Skulleye 0 Posted December 15, 2005 I'm not trying to sound egoistic, i enjoy creativity and imaginitive addons. But, it just struck as slightly odd, why we have barbarians. Well, it is a good way to show how much different you can do with the OFP engine. As well, I don't know any other game with melee fighting and this huge environments. With the right amount of effort, we might get a Total War mod, just in first person perspective. Doesn't that sound fun? And I imagine that he has fun with doing this too. That he likes having challenges and to overcome them
GoosemanXP 0 Posted December 15, 2005 Whow ! Barbarians, catapults .... Maybe you're opening a gate to a new OFP LOTR mod Good luck, lots of possibilities for it, looks fantastic
miles teg 1 Posted December 15, 2005 Hey don't knock the legowars guys until ya try them! lol! Seriously I used to hate non-modern era addons until I actually tried a few non-traditional addons like the Sci Fi mod's Tau Beta pack. That got me hooked as did the SST mod's bugs. Then I started having fun with PC's obscure addons and then was really blown away by his horses. The Civil War Mod also was a real surprise to me. I didn't think I'd enjoy it, but I found it to be extremely enjoyable, very challenging, and very atmospheric. Even though the hand to hand combat system is fairly basic, it still is alot of fun and really scary seeing a mad enemy soldier rushing at ya with his bayonet fixed while you are reloading your musket. lol! As for the these barbarians...while yes, they're not exactly the ideal sword wielding warrior that I would use for sword fighting era missions, they are still an excellent template for creating these new hand to hand combat systems that are essential for more ambitous addons and mods such as those new Roman legion addons that are being made. Barbarians did fight the Romans so Phil's units will be useful. Hopefully they'll be able to also make some good spear units also and use a good archery system like Phil's or similar. People like Phil Commando are laying out the ground work for these systems. I personally would love massive sword/spear/archery battles with huge ballistas and catapults throwing projectiles into castle walls and the invaders rushing through breaches in fierce hand to hand combat. Maybe such systems also will inspire BIS to form a seperate department in their development team focusing on medieval combat using a seperate dedicated hand to hand combat version of ArmA. That would be super cool if they did that I hope that at the very least, maybe BIS will put in a few more options for hand to hand combat in ArmA that modders like PhilCommando can then go nuts on. Thunnder Bunny 0 Posted December 16, 2005 I think the (trickle down effect) is one of the best reasons. Sci-fi/fantasy addons have broken many ofp limits and in turn help non sci-fi addons/mods break the same limits and vise versa. What came first the multi-turreted sci-fi tank or the multi turret torpedo boat?..........uh...cause I really have no idea.
Marcus4 0 Posted December 16, 2005 looks nice mate :-D but...there is a problem...i cant download them u need to get a fulltime host mate
-RuN- 0 Posted December 16, 2005 I love this creativity, and talent. Can we implement the sword fight into modern angry mobs armed with sticks and machetes? This would be a nice addition to the throwing of stones and bottles, and maybe then show dubitatives persons that it is worth for the gameplay.
