-------------------------------------------------------------

Two days ago, i got the idea to make this monster for OFP. It took me two days, so there could be some glitches.

I have made it relatively detailed (comparing to usual weapon models in OFP), but i wanted something nice.

I have made it in Oxygen from scratch, vertex by vertex, and it's my first attempt on modeling - so it isn't bad.

It is almost complete, only the detachable? handle (usually attached ?to the rail? in front of the optics) is missing, and that is only because i got no picture of it (i have three pictures and all of them are taken from the right side, so i don't know what's on the left :-( ).

Also it needs some textures - which i am afraid i cannot provide - so, HELP WANTED!

Here are some photos, so you know what's going on smile_o.gif

photo 2 (195Kb)

And here is what i did

Would think its pretty easy to put texture over that puppy. if nobody better comes along I'l give it a try, I managed to skin a few Ma Deuces without making them look completely like crap.

i have no prolem to put textures on it - except that i don't have any, and i am not an artist, so i don't think i know how to make them.

I would preffer to get some good pictures which i could use to make the textures from them, but i don't know how to make the textures from scratch sad_o.gif

This makes me want the BIS forums to really have a mesh forum (+and/or modeling). That way no models are ever really wasted. smile_o.gif

Ofcourse perhaps maybe OFP lacks a pure skinning "community" like CS. tounge_o.gif

Excellent work so far, I'm happy to see someone is making this addon. I am not able to provide any assistance with texturing, but I would be happy to help with other aspects if possible.

If you need additional pictures of the carrying handle, you can find many on Barrett's web site, or I can zip up a bunch of pics from other sources as well. Below I will post links to various web sites that might offer some additional information in case you haven't seen them already, as well as some neat video links too.

Barrett's military rifle page If you click on "details" next to the M107, you can see the carrying handle a little better.

Military.com site with info on XM109

USMC Scout Sniper Instructor School Terminal Ballistics Demonstration of the Barrett M82A1A SASR This is a video showing the M82A1 in action, not the XM109. Still interesting to watch.

M107 Rifle information includes several drawings, with nice detail of the carrying handle.

Hope some of those links help out, or at least provide some interesting information. I have more photos, so if you still need something let me know. I look forward to using your addon for a few special-application missions. It's looking very good so far.

ahh good, I'm glad someone is finally making this weapon. I was planning on modifying the M82A1 Model from my weapons pack at some point in the future, but now there is no need biggrin_o.gif

I hope you find some good textures, as the model deserves to shine with high quality textures.

Thanks for the links, grunt249. Nice video. Now i am trying to figure out how to make good textures, after i am happy with my results, i'll get back to modeling and finish the handle.

Attention everyone!

I'm anouncing a big hunt for high quality pictures of XM-109, to make textures out of them.

Post links here, or send the images to me (5133p39@email.cz) - if you happen to find any good.

Looks like you need to fix the normals on the model by using sharp & smooth edges in some places. rock.gif

Apart from that, it looks top notch.

Well, what can I do about the fact that proper model lighting is the most often forgotten part of model making.

Yet, it really takes minutes for something as simple as a rifle and it does make the model look a looooot better!

Really, models with proper normals look like made by professionals. biggrin_o.gifwink_o.gif

yes, the normals needs a little work, i'll get to it soon (i just didn't knew how to work in O2 effectively, i'll try to correct what i can - and i apreciate your suggestion, i want to make it perfect).

But now, the priority number 1 is the textures.

I have tried to make some from the images above, but i would like them in better resolution (what i have done so far looks relatively good, but when you get closer look it's a little... blurry)

Quick question about the texture problem...

I'm not a texture artist, so I'm not 100% certain about exactly what kind of details you need. But maybe you can tell us what part of the rifle you are having trouble with?

For example, details with the selector switch, muzzle brake, stock, etc?

I can provide you a lot of up-close and personal photos from the M82A1 and M107 series, which might help out a bit since most of the weapon details are the same. If you think the M82A1/M107 pics will help, let me know and I'll get a packet together for you.

i need everything anyone can supply, any images could be useful.

I have done only the magazine and gunlock textures - and they are little blurry when you are close to the model, so to tell you the truth: i have nothing.

Maybe someone more axperienced in texturing could do better, but i think the images i got are in so poor resolution that they are practically useless (or maybe it's just that i am a perfectionst.. who knows, i don't :-) ), except the really big one - but this is taken from somewhat awkward angle :-(

i think thats a decent enough photo to make textures from. but to be honest i think you should ask some previous M82 makers if uc an use their textures. well some of their textures. would match up nicely

hmmmm, i have this one too, but the textures made from this one are too blury, when you are close to the model.

It could be enough for texturing parts of the rifle which are not visible by the player who actualy carries the rifle in hands, but for those other parts i am afraid it will make you throw up ;)

But thanks for the image!

hmmm, i don't get it, ag_smith. There is nothing i can do with normals in O2. So, what was on your mind exactly, clever boy? Or did i missed something??

EDIT: big apology to ag_smith, he was right, and i was wrong :-)

Thank's for your comment.

You can alter normals in O2, it's under 'Surfaces' menu.

The XM-109 will have HE, HEAT and thermobaric ammo. I remember army testing a supressed version. This is my dream weapon = sniper granade launcher :-)
