Help me Choose

Recommended Posts

I am have the very unique chance to purchase VBS1 for my self. I am wondering if it is worth spending your birthday gift off. I loved Operation:Flashpoint and thought it was great, does OFP make any huge changes that could change my opinion about the game? Or is it just OFP but with better effects and all the other gizmos?

OFP but with better effects and all the other gizmos.

Enhanced Editor, Animals, Better graphics, more units, etc. No engine changes that I know of.

I think no.

Too much money for just some new features/units/effects, not worth.

And if i remember correctly, you can't use OFP addons(by just copy them to a VBS folder) with it.

---

You better use you money to upgrade your PC, whatever it needs.

Then collect the best looking addons(many new are coming) and play with them.

You can use most OFP addons without any problems if you have a copy of OFP:R (some data needed from the game for the addons to work).

If you're looking for new a game though I would not go for VBS1. There's no changes in effects or in the engine, and while the new units are nice you can get good quality addons in the OFP community for free - with no need to pay 50$ for a pack of Marines, etc. Also if you're not into mission making yourself it might get a bit boring quickly - few servers online (mostly empty), not many missions (sp or mp), no campaign.

It has it's merits though: new scripting commands, great support, a closed but highly motivated and talented - and much more serious - community. And slowly a 'gaming' community is beginning to emerge, even if the number of private customers is probably very, very low (a few hundred or thousand - nothing like the 1 million+ OFP copies).

Personnally, i would select to keep my money to upgrade my system to enjoy more the OFP2 i will buy.

But if you have enough money in front of you for VBS1 + OFP2 + a system upgrade , well go on if you really want VBS1 smile_o.gif

Radeon 9800xt

1024mb

Audigy 2ZS

It is basicly a top of the line system.

No, not really. A 'basically top of th eline system' would feature an AMD 64 3400+, an an X800XT or 6800U ;)

Yours WAS top of the line, until the moment it was sold ;) But ain't that how computers go now?

I have an intel, so AMD is out of my way. The X800XT is not worth buying, why in the world would i pay 800 bucks to get a video card that is slightly better?

Also a lot of you say save the money for OFP2. I can do that easy, but this is my Birthday present i can get anything i can never really save up money for.

Eh?

The X800XT is much better than the 9800 series, ESPECIALLY in the newly released games such as HL2, Doom 3, Far Cry etc.

About VBS, sure go for it if you really want, but it really doesn't have much more to offer than what already exists with OFP's mods.

I suggest buying Half Life 2 or something like that, a completley new game smile_o.gif

Just my opinion.

Why don't you talk to the people in the VBS resources forums. People there have the software - and in general are very cautious about recommending VBS to 'gamers'. It's expensive and it's a bad thing to shell out a lot of money based on wrong expectations. This is simply the wrong forum.

@gandalf: that's a good one ;)

@status_cz: there are some more changes. e.g. VBS handles high-poly models way better than ofp. so you can play on a very detailed island with very detailed models and decent textures without lag. in ofp that scenario would lag like hell.

It's basicly massive enigine optimisation (well it is for the military, they don't wan lag do they?), with many more scripting commands and comes with very high quality well made and reserched units with realistic configs. I hear you can beef up the view distance to near full and get better frames than if u tried it at half the Res distance, plus the terrain streaming system is better and lod management.

From a technical point of view it's what we want OFP to be, but it's not really a "game" but a simulation. Having said that it's not got much more to offer, just what it does offer it smoother and works that little bit better. I won't be buying it anyway unless I can somehow get a few 100 quid together to buy it and 1 or 2 modules.

These forums are for discussing Operation Flashpoint, not VBS1 (except for certain news topics in the appropriate place), discsussions such as this one should be addressed to a VBS forum such as the one at Vbsresources.com.
