Creating a genuinely impossible mission is a trivial exercise.   However, is it possible to create a mission that is fun and winnable, but so tough that it is virtually unbeatable?   The Un-Impossible mission explores that question.

The mission will be posted in a few days, it just needs some finishing touches.   In the meantime, to whet your appetite,  screenshots.

Ahhhh yes.......the Un-Impossible Mission.

I just wonder how many people will actually be able to complete this and how many will give up after only half a dozen tries.

It will take a determined will to finally complete this mission.......and lots of time.

It isn't easy but it is definitely possible.

Will it be a simple test of ,tons of enemies storming me and my eight guys can i shoot them all, or a test of ingenuity and sneakiness?

It is a mission that requires much thought and strategic planning if you want to succeed.

Ingenuity and sneakiness is just about right.

You do not get stormed by tons of enemies.

It is in fact the other way round.......you have to storm them more or less........sneakiness and discretion are the keys.

I was one of the beta testers on this at OFPEC, it took me a long time to complete it.

The mission is soon to be released, I hope lots of people manage to complete it and don't get discouraged to quickly.

If its a max skill a.i. mission where they pick us from 500+ meters it wont be enjoyable, what factors determine the dificulty of such mission may i ask rock.gif .

In my opinion pointless thing to seek "strategy" In OFP. AI behaviour not allows to play like a strategy game in SP mission. wink_o.gif

If you really want a challenge for making an impossible mission, start the players off in attack helicopters and tanks (fully fuelled, armed, repaired and with support vehicles).

I've noticed all the hard coop missions are infantry-based.

Not true.

If you know the various ways AI can react and plan for the most likely, then strategy is entirely possible. You might also need a backup plan in case your first one fails.

Having said all that....AI does have a way of surprising you at times.

Not true.

If you know the various ways AI can react and plan for the most likely, then strategy is entirely possible.  You might also need a backup plan in case your first one fails.

Having said all that....AI does have a way of surprising you at times.

use that guard waypoint....

they will try to flank u once they know were u are, and take reallisticly cover instead of just lying on the ground, when they are in the "safe" behaviour, then will form small groups that are talking with eachother... (well, not really talking but it looks like it wink_o.gif )

Review summary:

While the difficulty of this mission is horrendous, causing it to not earn a perfect score, the mission is otherwise flawless. I spent a total of over 28 hours on the mission, 6 of those trying to pull any bug whatsoever from it. My attempts were fruitless. The whole point of this mission was to test the limits of difficulty in Operation Flashpoint, and it definitely succeeded. Unfortunately, the mission might be near impossible for new players, but even taking a hack at it would be fun. This is definitely a 'Must Play'. Hence ends my rant.

Mission details

Dawn on Kolgujev.

What was sovereign Soviet territory has been swamped by the invading Americans. They are flying the Stars and Stripes from the highest point on the island - an insult which cannot be allowed.

Sergeant Guba, take your veteran Spetz Natz squad to the top of The Hill and teach the American invaders a lesson - tear down that flag! The Americans are swarming all over the island in strength ... they think they are impregnable, the fools. Show them the truth.

Un-Impossible Mission is an exercise in mission design. How difficult can a mission be without being genuinely impossible? What is the limit of difficulty in OFP? It's been a long road but the result is fun, fair and virtually impossible. You can win - there are no tricks - but it is very hard.

This is a Single Player mission which is specifically designed to be played in Veteran mode. There are no Cadet mode waypoints. The only addon required is General Barron's (or Kegetys') editor upgrade.

- The cutscene was excellent. Showed good taste in humor and women.

- Intro - Very good. One of the best intros I've seen.

- Well, instead of working on my own mission tonight, I'm gonna be playing this.

- All in all, the replay factor MAKES this mission.

- Overall, this is an action packed mission with ambushes galore and a great atmosphere of suspense.

Played (and died) approximatley half a dozen times now, each time with a slightly different strategy, each time genuinely suprised by the enemy AI and the situations I end up in.

An essential download, and the type of open-ended, use your brain, go anywhere type mission that OFP is best suited at.

Currently playing with Sanctuarys Marine Assault Pack unit replacement mod and it plays great.

Cheers Macguba, i'll be playing this one for quite a bit longer me thinks!

When this was in beta testing there were a lot of unexpected results. tounge_o.gif War stories are welcome in this thread - half the fun of making a mission like this is hearing how people get on.

Glad to hear its working ok with the Marine Assault mod. Different units will affect the difficulty, which is why I kept it to BIS units. Makes it fair, simple and a good place to start from for people who want to mod it up.

i played the un-impossible mission and unfortunately didnt have time to appreciate the wonderfully made mission as i got killed very fast every time :|

Lol that is what is supposed to happen .... at least at first. My three tips for the start are; either just make a run for it an hope for the best; hit the dirt the instant the mission starts and order your loons into an all round defence; and try silenced weapons.

Once you get the hang of it - and it can take a while - the start actually isn't that difficult. Don't worry if you take a couple of casualties, just head south to meet up with the civvies.

Very nice mission I must say. I tried hitting the dirt at the very start, and after a while I managed to stay alive untill it got a bit quite. I always took a few casualties though. After that I moved uphill, but before I got there all my team members where dead. I managed to clear the hill on my own by advancing very slowly, but got killed on my way down. With a savegame on top I tried again and got to clear parts of the old base. But all the tanks, espescially the abrahams make it very hard to start heavy action. Every time I take one out another one blasts me away. maybe I should try to visit the civies first...
