23:35 and I'm seasick! crazy_o.gif

Started my first campaign mission - patrol BF17. Came across 2 merchants and a tanker on the way and sank them with my deck gun. smile_o.gif Ran away from the warships, though. ghostface.gif

Now, I received a message that my diesel fuel is at 50%. Any way to refuel? rock.gif

This is fun but I must stop. smile_o.gif

No way to refuel, but you may want to consider turning and heading for home. Or at least travel a lot slower on the surface - I use 1/3 speed most of the time and only go faster when I'm chasing something. The faster you go, the more gas you use.

Your nav officer can give you an estimate of how far you can go with the fuel you have at the speed you are going.

Can´t you refuel on other ports under german command ? Guess I read it somewhere. You can save a hell lot of fuel if you only surface to get air in and the batteries reloaded. This way you can stretch your action radius very much.

I´m just fighting with the torpedo calculation for the area covering torpedos with 2 gyroscopes. The manual isn´t that detailed on that...

Finished first patrol. Sunk 20K tons of merchants. Took some very minor dammage from an e-boat but that was quikly repaired.

There was a point where I ordered the deck gun crew to fire at will at a very close disabled target and they didn't fire. Why is that? rock.gif I had to manually fire the gun myself to sink the ship.

At least I didn't bump into one of these freaks of nature. crazy_o.gif

also ran into annother large convoy off the coast of cornwall sank 2 ships incuding a T3 tanker and severly damaged a troop transport before i had to run and hide because of the 6 warships that appeard outta nowhere smile_o.gif

If you have crewmen maning the deck gun it allows you to fire it. If you want them to fire at will you must put an officer in the officers bridge slot. Also, make sure you have the right setting for the range to target, if its set to close range and your target is far away they wont shoot until you close.

You can also assign a target (Below water line, deck guns or bridge) for them to shoot at as well.

Good Hunting.

Just ran into a convoi with two escort destroyers. The convoi itself consisted of 3 C2´s, one T2 tanker (hell of a boom) a troop carrier and some merchants and coastal ships. First I sunk the lead destroyer, ducked away and deployed a countermeasure that kept the second destroyer busy. I fired acoustic guided rear torpedo on second destroyer and got him at once. Now I had every time in the world to take care of the convoi itself. I sunk the C2´s, the tanker and crippled the troop carrier. Sunk some of the merchants and coastal ships and returned to the crippled troop carrier with one torpedo left. I fired it at it and to my surprise it didn´t sink it. The ship turned over very much but didn´t sink. I stayed in range for over one week, but the ship just didn´t fulfill it´s destiny. You guessed it...the weather was fine all the time, but there was a 7km/h wind that made my crew scared to use deckgun...

I had to end this mission without sinking the troop ship. I even rammed the ship 3 times, but it didn´t help. Just decreased my hull integrity.

One tip though. Use the area covering torpedos for convois with steady course. You have to set the 2 gyroscopes to get a good solution but it worked great for me. I have used 3 of that torpedos on the convoi and 2 of them sunk ships after they had missed their initial target. You only have to take care that the route of the torpedo is right between the ships. You can adjust the settings by clicking the green box above torpedo selection buttons on torpedo course planning screen.

Here is the freak:

It´s defense was still active, so I decided to appraoch it from the other side where the turrets and guns couldn´t hit me.

As there was a savegame issue I started a new career.

I started the career at 4th of december 1941. I have finished 8 Patrols. My home base is La Spezia in Italy with the 29th fleet. The boat I am using is a VII B with a double dual-flak turret and 8,8 deck gun. I have installed the latest fashion in enemy detection and countermeasures and I´m thinking of getting a new boat soon.

My tonnage for these 8 missions is 240.796

I only go for big targets. Little trawlers and merchants are only engaged with deck gun if possible.

Once I get the X class boats I will check out New York and Arctica.

But for now the area around Gibraltar is perfect. First I got used to the handling of ship and attacked lone ships. Now I go for hunting near Gibraltar once my mission goal is reached. I sunk the east guards of Gibraltar in a sweep yesterday and the sky was swarming with planes afterwards. It really pays to have qualified flak personel in two turrets. They shot down a lot of planes and I got honored the knights cross with oak leaves and diamonds smile_o.gif

Yes I patched it to 1.2 as the patch fixed several issues.

I only have installed some custom music right now, but I have downloaded some "mods" already that fix uniforms and such. Havent downloaded the world mod yet. But I do follow the developement at the SH 3 forums.

I will try to get through the campaign first and then I will install mods. It´s just to risky for me to install such and find out that my campaign files are corrupt...

i remember when i was unable to use flakgun on the Type-II u-boat in good weather... it was my first mission, and i wanted to check if i realy have that flak gun instaled, i didint have it instaled, so i instaled it, it took 2 days... so i shiped out in 1939 september 3 smile_o.gif

so i recomend you to check if your boat has guns that you want.

maybe that's because of 100% realism? don't know...

Bah! I don't know why I couldn't use the deck gun in my patrols. Same thing happened in the 2nd patrol. Deck guns manned and I gave the orders to fire at will. Again I did the firing myself to get the job done.

Came across my first convoy in the 2nd patrol, at night off Ireland's northwest coast. They were inbound for Liverpool, I assume. I was already low on fish from snagging merchants on my way in (no deck gun in stormy weather). I only managed to sink 2 of the convoy's C3s, the second one on my retreat behind the convoy, from an aft torp, smack in the C3's stern. Lots of fireworks.

About 2 years ago, I bought an FPS naval game called Enigma: Rising Tide. There's a thread for it here somewhere. I finished playing it a long time ago. SH3 is a big step up!

I've patched to 1.2 but I'd prefer not to install the mod at this time. Maybe in a few weeks. I, too, have installed the music pack, as well as downloaded some other songs, inclusding some Nazi military marching music - shivers. But I'm really getting sick of hearing Marlena Dietrich's rendition of "La Vie En Rose".

Yes, it works but I don’t use it cause it of performances issues… my old 9700P can’t handle it very well. sad_o.gif

edit: And its not quite what I would call normal AA, its more some kind of glow effect IMO.

I'm having a bad hair day on my 3rd patrol. Hardly found anything but warships are sure finding me!

After half a dozen attacks against me, I've repaired everything but my hull is at 82%.

Where are all the juicy targets? Bermuda?! crazy_o.gif

I am using "Der Schwein" - Beware of the mighty ziggy piggy!!

How about the rest of you?

Hehe,

I m using the eaglehead too.

Phew,

Just had my first mission to the east coast of florida .. not that i got there.

I plotted a route that took me from Bordeaux to the east coast of canada then down the eastcoast to florida, just as i came close to the eastern canadian shore i got picked up by a Fletcher Destroyer .. he came out of the middle of nowhere as usual.  Got into a cat and mouse game and managed to hit m with an acoustic torpedo from the rear torpedo tube, after reloading i manouvered back into position to hit m again with a second one cause he was still floating and running, i fired my second ( and last ) acoustic torpedo from the rear and after a race between the fleeing destroyer and my slow acoustic torpedo i hit m in the back again .. after 2 minutes he lay on the bottom of the ocean.  I continiued my route after that but not an hour later i got a radio message of a big convoy a few hundred km north of me ... hmmmm ... i wanna see the bahama's but a big juicy convoy ... ok, you already guessed i went for the convoy.

After a full night and day ( convoy was moving at medium speed ) i catched up with them. I trailed them for a few hours and was going to untill it got dark, was 10 am then.  Not a few minutes later the escorts spotted or heared me, got a little careless to get visual but was foggy, so by the time i spotted the first ship they were only 2km away and 3 flower corvettes were already on an intercept course to grease me.

One was approaching me head on the other came from my left, the left one was further so i decided on hitting the headon one first.  Lined up nicely in his path selected my trusty old torpedos and put it on fast.  Waited and waited untill he was beginning to engage me with his deckguns ( i was still surfaced cause i wanted him in an attackrun to stand a better chance ) So he s steaming headon and i launch my torpedo when he s about 900m away, when the torpedo is out of the tube i dive to periscope depth and slightly divert my course to the right of him.  He kept on going and ran straight into my torpedo.

When he sank the second one was dealt with in the same way only difference is i was at periscope depth but had enough time to lineup for the kill.

Then a third one came ... between the second flower corvette sinking and the third one arriving i was already lining up for a T3 kill so i ignored him.  He went to the spot where i sank the first flower corvette now well behind me.

Lining up for the t3 kill was difficult cause the convoy changed course 2 times just at last second by then the 3rd flower corvette had picked me up again and was approaching me from my 180.  He came deadon but i was out of rear torpedos. I decided to be the bastard so when he was right behind me steaming full throttle towards me i retracted the periscope and hit full steam backwards ( i kinda like that bug tounge_o.gif ) he ran over me damaged my tower/flak and deckgun but soon sank.

Took some distance repaired everything and gained back on the 15+ merchant convoy, all US ships but with UK escorts.

It consisted of 2 x T3 ( yes yes my already decided targets ) 4 - 5 troop ships about 6-8 c 2's and 2-3 c3's and some liberty transports.

I thought i had all the escorts dealt with but there was one more surprise, leading the convoy up front was a clemson destoryer.

Took me a while to get into position cause the t3's where nicely in the middle of the convoy but i managed to pick them out both with one torpedo from their 90°. By then i had 2 torpedos left, i decided on hitting a troopship cause that was as much tonnage as a c3 but easier to sink.

So hit m once ... didn t sink him, hit him the second time that sank him 1.5 days later ...

Out of torpedos i trailed the convoy for another 2 days constantly reporting position but i guess it was too far for planes to reach it ... finally i got bored and went back to base.

Was a cool mission, didn t get a very high tonnage of it cause i didn t get credited for the flower corvette that ran over me and they aren t that much tonnage anyway but they sure as hell put up a nasty fight.  And they are so hard to hit once they start using depthcharges and scanning their zone for you.

The clemson tried to find me but i was in the middle of the convoy, he never exactly knew where i was and didn t fire a single depthcharge :-)

I got pics but they are too big and i cant be bothered to resize them now and upload + post them.  Maybe tomorrow.

I love this game.

Cheers

Quote[/b] ]Looking at the pics that Bals posted got me thinking about what everyones logo is on the side of their boats.

I used to have the sheep for a lot of time, but I switched to the S logo as it is colored while the other one was hard to detect as it was white only.

But now on to something completely different. I already wrote about the positive effect of the keel depth setting for torpedo runs. I will elaborate it more now. Once you find a ship use your ship recognition manual to find out it´s keel depth. Go to torpedo screen and adjust the running depth of your magnetic torpedo 1 - 2 meters below the indicated keel depth of the target. This way you will be able to instantly sink almost any ship with one torpedo only.

I did some pictures to illustrate that:

Torpedo running up to C2 freighter, wich has a keel depth of 7,5 m´s if I remember right. Set the torpedo running depth to 9,5 meters. The torpedo will run under the ship.

subh3l.jpg

The magnetic pistol will set off right below the keel and break apart the ship instantly, even if your crew tells you that the torpedo has missed the target wich it actually has, as it did not impact on the ships hull.

subh3m.jpg

As you can see the ship is totally wrecked after the torpedo exploded under it´s keel.

Hope this helps.
