Billabong81 0 Posted April 25, 2005 gotta try the campaign later, my dad told me he didnt manage to get out of the harbour so i must prove my excellence by doing so w/o even reading the bloody manual For both Kiel and Wilmshaven (sp?) all you have to do to get out of the harbor area is go full speed ahead, don't touch your rudders or anything. Then get into close view on the map once you have exited the harbor and place waypoints to get out into the open ocean . Fairly easy as long as your waypoints don't have you running into land . Winters 1 Posted April 25, 2005 Whatever you do stay away from 2nd Flotilla, they start at Lorient and thats a bitch of a port to get out of. You will be stuck at x1 compression because of 2 areas which stick out. I started a new campaign in '41 with the 29th Flotilla in the Med. Theatre. You don't have very far to go to find ships and there seems to be an abudance of them about. I sunk 8 ships all in the same area and have yet to touch any of my torps. Billabong81 0 Posted April 25, 2005 I started a new campaign on Saturday in '39 with the 7th Flotilla out of Kiel. It is a hassle getting in and out of port because you have to go through that area southwest of Sweden, but it is worth it for the deck gun you get on the ship . I keep getting assigned patrol way over on the west side of Ireland though, takes like 2 hours (real time) to do a patrol . I usually go through Scapa Flow, as the English Channel is just loaded with Elco Torpedo boats and destroyers...and no merchants! Has anyone tried going into the English Channel around June 6, 1944? Does the game try and simulate how it was on D-Day with thousands of Troop Carriers & such? Would be pretty cool if it did .
hellfish6 7 Posted April 25, 2005 Well they do have the landing ships (check out the Museum on the main menu) for it.
DeLiltMon 0 Posted April 25, 2005 I love my supercharged Type VIIB engines. I can outrun most anything I need to and I can keep up with a convoy while submerged. I just bought a Type IXC boat and the first thing I did was get the supercharged engines. Just equiped my VIIB with them and headed out to see and they are indeed a big improvement, I wonder if I can get a set of cherry bomb pipes and some stripes to go with them

Daddl 10 Posted April 26, 2005 Arf! Didn't have many problems with the game up to now. There I am in the middle of a convoy passing through the Irish Sea during a heavy storm (so I could just ignore the escorts), slaughtering one ship after the other, and suddenly the game crashes to desktop. Ok, stuff like that happens, but no problem: I just load an old savegame. Or so I thought... After playing for about half an hour all of a sudden - BLAM - the game craps out again. I already repeated this several times now. Looks like it always craps out at on point or another during my attack on this convoy (it's not a single mission, but a convoy that was reported to me during a campaign patrol)... As I'm sick now of reporting one crash after another to M$ (actually I didn't, but the option comes up every time) I give up for now. Has anyone else experienced something like that? Any hints how I could get the game more stable? Note: I don't use any mods but for some replacements for the crew voices (giving them the voices of the german 'Das Boot' actors). Apart from that the game's a clean 1.2 version.
hellfish6 7 Posted April 26, 2005 The only crashes I experience are on the crew management (F7) screen.
kevbaz 0 Posted April 26, 2005 i had one crash in the few weeks ive been playing and it was on the crew management screen. keep getting my ass kicked by destoyers, hiding under tankers is handy though, untill yer batteries die
Daddl 10 Posted April 26, 2005 Mhhh... at least in one of the cases where I crashed I had just hit F7 to bring up the crew management screen. Not sure about all the other cases. I never had such problems before, tho. Let's hope 1.3 fixes these troubles (without ruining my campaign) in a few weeks.
Balschoiw 0 Posted April 26, 2005 No crash here for all the time I played it.

Winters 1 Posted April 27, 2005 You can set the speech to German if you like without any mods. It wont be the Das Boot actors but its still German.

I recommend replacing or even removing the 'Jawohl Herr Kaleun' sounds (check that thread for details). The Semmelrogge sound simply has too much background noise. The new sounds are mostly very nice, and they bring back a lot of memories! Just remember to make a backup before replacing the original sounds!
mr burns 132 Posted April 27, 2005 You can set the speech to German if you like without any mods. It wont be the Das Boot actors but its still German. normally i use english because text boxes just fit better and i also learn a little bit, but for u-boot war the choice of language wasn´t hard, set it to german from the start. you play in german too ? thanks daddl, i´d never tried the german forum
DeLiltMon 0 Posted April 27, 2005 I play with the text in English but the voices in German, it just didn't seem right with the crew speaking English with an American accent on a u-boat and it reminded me of U-571 too much *shudders*

Daddl 10 Posted April 28, 2005 BTW: if anyone wants to play in a screen resolution >1024x768 it IS possible: thanks to a modified directx9 dll you can place in your game folder (guess once who made it). Note: there is no need to crack your game to apply this, it works perfectly fine with the original game! Here's how you do it: Download the modified directx9 dll If you have WinXP SP2 you also need the application compatibility toolkit by M$ Now you need to extract the dx9res archive into your SH3 folder and create & install a profile with the compatibility toolkit. Here's how the latter is done (taken from the english UBI forums): Quote[/b] ]Download and install the Application Compatibility Toolkit from Microsoft. After it is installed, on the start menu, go to "All Programs/Microsoft Application Compatibility Toolkit 4.0/Tools" and run the Compatibility Administrator. When the program opens, make sure New Database is highlighted under Custom Databases, and click the Fix button. In the "Name of program to be fixed" box, type SH3. Now, click the browse button, and select the sh3.exe in your SH3 install directory. Click Next. Under "Operating System Modes" select None. Click Next. In the "Compatibility Fixes" box, check DelayDLLInit, and click the Parameters button. In the "Command Line" box, type d3d9.dll and click OK. (You can click the "Test Run" button to make sure it is working.) Click Next. Click Finish. Click the Save button, name it SH3, and click OK. On the File menu, select Install. Close the Compatibilty Administrator. Enjoy SH3. The screen resolution is set in the config file that comes with the modified dll. I assume this also works with other games that have a fixed screen resolution! This works fine on my machine, and I can't see any slow downs because of the higher resolution at 1280x960. kevbaz 0 Posted April 28, 2005 exactly which folder do we put the dll into?
theavonlady 2 Posted April 28, 2005 exactly which folder do we put the dll into? Read the ReadMe: Quote[/b] ]To install, extract this archiveto the directory the program is installed to. That would be \SilentHunterIII, where the EXE file is. EDIT: And thank you Kegetys for this nifty solution. Now playing at 1920 x 1200. Am I imagining things or does my water look more reflective with your DLL installed?

hellfish6 7 Posted April 28, 2005 What I Learned from SH3, posted from elsewhere: Quote[/b] ]1. Submarines are aircraft magnets.2. BdU is a corporate front which has autoreply turned on. 3. I would've failed the TDC class. Miserably. 100 times. 4. Destroyers have more and bigger guns than submarines. 5. It is generally inadvisable to engage in gun duels with multiple destroyers. (One is manageable on occasion.) 6. Sub guns are evil attractive devices. If you man the deck gun only, a destroyer will appear. If you man the AA gun, a Hurri will appear. If you man both, a PT will appear and kill your deck gun crew. 7. Single torpedoes will miss astern by 100 meters. 8. Torpedo spreads will invariably sink the target, though only one will ever hit. 9. There are no ships in the game world, only targets and submersible targets (you). 10. Torpedo wakes are to escorts as spider webs are to an arachnophobe with a rolled up newspaper. 11. When the magnetic exploder is used, the G7e will invariably premature, run too deep under the target, or bounce off. 12. Convoys are not deck gun target galleries. 13. Destroyers can run out of ashcans, but they nearly always win before that happens. Sometimes they give up, but they take Ritalin from mid-41 onwards. 14. All sonar men are clinically deaf upon assumption of station and could not hear Steve Tyler in girly scream mode 100 meters off the port beam. 15. Destroyers breed in the English Channel. Stay out. 16. If you sink anything in the Channel, you might as well ground your boat on the bottom and save all 371 Pommie DD's the trouble of finding you and doing it themselves. 17. The quickest learned reflex is hitting "c" and a rudder hotkey after an aircraft sighting. 18. Atlantic storms will always last longer than your remaining fuel. 19. If the weather is good, it will get ugly shortly after the first convoy radio contact report. 20. Scapa Flow has anti-submarine nets. 21. If you ram an anti-submarine net, the net will win. 22. Gunther Prien was a cowboy. 23. Minefields are the least entertaining and informative of the 17 ways I have found to die. 24. Rivers are not navigable, thus you cannot sail to Paris and demand the French surrender to the Kriegsmarine. 25. It is much better to know your boat's crush depth than to discover it. 26. Ramming is an illogical tactic. If they do it, they always lose. If you do it, you always lose. 27. In the numerous head-butting contests I have had with the ocean floor, I have yet to win.
