Balschoiw 0 Posted April 21, 2005 Quote[/b] ]How do you watch your hull status, other than the red area on the depth guage? You can check your hull status on the crew management screen. It is written right at the boat. Quote[/b] ]Doesn't that circle appear when you click on a ships marker in the navigation map? Yes but I want to have it static. I use the map tools a lot for getting distances, calculating approximate courses and such. Just my habit. Gives you a good overview of the situation if you manually fix some constants. Makes it easier for me to keep track of movements and predict possible rendevouz points with enemy vessels. Test is. Use markers, the ruler and circle tool. It will make your life a lot easier and the sim even more close to reality. Another thing: Magnetic pistol again. If you are in a heavy storm the torpedos often break through surface when set to high speed and explode when they hit a wave. To avoid this set speed of magnetic torpedos to "slow" this way they will surf along the waves and will not explode before they actually reach their target. It also looks like the magnetic pistol is influenced by the earth magnetic field. I have set up a mission high up in the northern hemisphere and had a lot of magnetic torpedo malfunctions there. Can anyone confirm this ?

Not very reassuring.
Balschoiw 0 Posted April 21, 2005 Quote[/b] ]But that doesn't measure for you your maximum depth allowed. Of course not If your hull is below 70 you should not go at 100m´s. It just gives you an indication. Have repair team ready before the dive

iNeo 0 Posted April 21, 2005 How do you choose a target, cause the sonar man usually says there's none selected? (I'm not using map update thing btw if that has something to do with it.) And why can't I ever use the radar, the button just gets an orange border? I've managed to launch a manual torpedo though But it missed Edit: It annoys me that when they spot a ship, it limits the time skipping. Is there anything you can do to speed it up again, except wait for a pretty long time? Edit 2: I found out how to select a target, but I still don't know how to use the radar. kevbaz 0 Posted April 22, 2005 that will explain it, thanks Im on patrol 17 now and im in feb 1941. Im still at brest and having lots of success patrolling the west coast of ireland - coast of cornwall, intercepting lots of convoys.

iNeo 0 Posted April 22, 2005 Damn it my manual torpedoes never hit their target, even if I'm 400 meters close. I tried changing the speed thing on the TDC screen to fast. Is there anything I might have missed? I identify ship, determine range, choose angle and let it find out the target's speed. Then fire.

Daddl 10 Posted April 23, 2005 I love this game! This is Silent Service on steroids, and I must say I'm quite addicted to this game already! Just started my second campaign (1939, 7th fleet), and I had three very impressive missions. I got more than 40,000 tons of cargo in each mission plus some warships (2 destroyers, one corvette and a trawler) and two planes. Compared to the first campaign where I started in 1st fleet this is much, much easier. The additional torpedoes (and the deck gun - if weather permits it's use) make up for the annoying trip through the Skagerak. Even after getting a very skilled and complete crew, and every upgrade available (admittedly not much up to now) I have >3800 points left. With the Type II boat I barely managed 400 - 500 points per mission - and I had to spend much more on upgrades! On the other hand missions now take me 3-4 hours real time to play through. @Bals: good hint with the magnetic torpedoes. I had quite some success using the 'below keel' technique, but I have now reverted to using the old (but much faster and further ranging) steam torpedoes exclusively (1939 - 1940). With those almost every torpedoe is a hit, and a well aimed torpedoe at just above keel depth (or in a vital compartment like the machine room) is almost always a one shot kill (even on a C2 or C3 cargo), too. In addition to that they hit very reliably at 5000m (good for attacking convoys), even with torpedo dudds activated (I play at 50% realism). Some pictures: A cargo ship I hunted down in a heavy storm. Took only 1 torpedo to sink, but it was quite difficult to get far enough for the torpedo to activate without loosing sight of the ship! Is there anything I might have missed? I identify ship, determine range, choose angle and let it find out the target's speed. Then fire. No, thats it. Speed and distance is quite easy to get but are you sure you got the AoB right? Remember that AoB is the angle of your boats position viewed from the target boat, not the other way around. If you are infront of the target the AoB is 0 and if you are behind it its 180.

Well I'm not very precise when I do that though, maybe I should be more careful.
DeLiltMon 0 Posted April 25, 2005 I've just got to February 1940 and superchargers have become available for the engines of my Type VIIB. Has anybody tried them? Are they worth having or am I better off saving my renown for a better boat later on?
hellfish6 7 Posted April 25, 2005 I love my supercharged Type VIIB engines. I can outrun most anything I need to and I can keep up with a convoy while submerged. I just bought a Type IXC boat and the first thing I did was get the supercharged engines. One thing I recommend for all you captains is to NOT buy a radar. There is a bug in the game which keeps it on all the time, so you can't turn it off. Ever since installing mine, I've encountered a lot more destroyers when I've been running on the surface because they're able to detect my radar emissions. Maybe if they fix that in a patch it will be worth it (and I have used my radar to track ships in storms). I just wrapped up a patrol off the coast of Cuba last night. It was great - I stumbled into a convoy off the Azores and managed to sink two T3s and a Troop Ship. On the way across the Atlantic I discovered a T3 shipping lane - every 12 hours or so I'd find (and sink) a lone T3 tanker. It took me five days or so to cross the Atlantic... do the math. And since T3s don't have any deck guns besides small AA cannons, there's little risk in shooting them with your deck gun. I was out of torpedos by the time I reached my patrol area, but I'd sunk 15 ships, none of which was smaller than an 8000 ton troop ship. My total tonnage was nearly 140,000. Has anybody noticed that it's much easier to attack British convoys than it is to attack Americans? I'm in December of '42 and the Americans are always really fast to react and have great sensors to detect me. The Brits are usually left stumbling about while I make mincemeat of their merchants.
