Games that changed the world

Recommended Posts

PC zone (April's addition) have done another feature of OFP.This time it's under the banner of "Games that changed the world". It starts with a brief look at the early years of Marek & Ondrej and then right up to present day, Hinting at OFP2 showing at E3 this may.

Ive taken scans of these so feel free to download them here (1.45mb).

Cheers Buggs smile_o.gif

Quite cool read, we used to listen to the same Voice of America and whatever else there was in Poland as well. If you don't know there was a huge hype about AMERICA in Eastern Europe, and still is to a large extent.

Fortunately we were lucky enough to make it to AMERICA if you will, and see what life is really like. It is good to get a real perspective on living under such different systems, and I mean LIVING not just vacationing (totally different right).

So anyway, I was always amazed at how lucky Marek and Ondra were to have a PC back then, I thought they must have been from a very rich family in Czechoslovakia. My personal dream as a kid was always to get a PC, finally got one at around 12-13, but somehow I feel I missed out on a lot anyway. That's life.

Nice article indeed. I guess the warmup for OFP2 is starting slowly, and I can see Codemasters & BIS are trying to do better PR than they did with OFP:CWC. Let's hope OFP2 will dwarf the sales numbers of the original game.

Wow. It really puts things into perspective, OFP has its faults but it's amazing how good it is for a first game of BIS and all their difficulties. What a pioneering game OFP is. smile_o.gif

I couldn't agree more. There's definitely a feeling of things moving up a gear or two. I currently look after the games department for a high street retailer and every four weeks or so i get a visit from a codemasters rep who gives me a listing of all the forthcoming releases etc.

And the last time saw him i asked if he had any info on OFP2, to which he replied he had, however he wasn't aloud to talk about it yet. i think a bribe of some description might be in order...... rock.gif

Cheers, Buggs

Thanks for hosting Placebo wink_o.gif

I cant believe that flashpoint has been out for 3 years and I still play almost everyday. And the fact that no other game has even tried to at least copy the idea of Flaspoint, Just shows how absolutley amazing the game is. Good work bis&codemasters. A truely orignal idea and game. Plus I love any article on OFP. I could read about this game all day.

Actually, Battlefield 1942 is close to the concept of OFP, of course there are major differences but I think it has taken a lot from OFP. smile_o.gif

And that "noone has copied it" (I think they have) may show that it isn't that good, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. wink_o.gif

About fade & OFP gameplay

Quote[/b] ]Enter the wrong access code and the game gradually became so hard to play that most would give up. Of course the game was so bloody hard anyway it was difficult to tell the difference

I think this shows that even though so many copies of the game were sold, why so many people never explored it to the fullest. sad_o.gif

I never thought it was that 'bloody hard'

Or more likely it shows the quality of the progamming skills of Bis, the vision, and as importantly the balls to actually do something different rather than the lame narrow-corridor style game that still is being churned out. Seems there are few companies prepared to take the risk on writing a new engine, expanding the genre, pushing the boundaries of the genre (pun intended). It's only recently with games such as Stalker and perhaps Far Cry that companies are slowly dipping their feet into the tepid waters of non-generic FPS gaming smile_o.gif

Thank goodness UBI soft set OFP free. Good gods. It might've become some horribly bastardized version of the wonderful game we have today. UBI and similar companies aren't much good at churning out anything other than opiates of the mainstream gamer.

About the FADE snippet. What exactly does FADE do? Makes the game harder to play or does it degrade the overall performance of the game? I thought it was always the latter. That makes me wonder if FADE is somehow at work on my PC... those bloody tanks snipe me from 900 yards all the time!

Quote[/b] ]What exactly does FADE do?

FADE does stuff like make guns less accurate, your guy slower, etc... Basically it makes the game so annoying that you stop playing it. And tanks sniping you isn't a FADE feature, that's just an annoying "feature" in OFP tounge_o.gif .
