Non-american war movies

Recommended Posts

Great movies mentioned here. One i could add to the list is a bridge too far, alltough it is partly american..

How about russian films? anyone seen russian warfilms? can you recomend me some? I havent seen any..

The movies from bosnia brought to my mind a event from the kosovo campaign. The one where russia occupied an airfield, and NATo almost attacked it. My friend who was there (KFOR)

told me that there were some brand new ruskie fighters (MiG-31 Foxhound??) at the airfield, and thats why both nato and russia wanted the airport. NATO wanted a sample piece, and russia wanted to avoid getting coucht. Any more information about this incident? (sorry for the offtopic)

I wanted to post a link for "Warrior" a film about troops in former Yugoslavia. I was not able to find a link. If anyone can help out it would be appreciated. Good movie.

Here is "Die Brücke" a really old german movie . It is about some teenagers inb germany at wartime who are told to defend a bridge. Americans attack the bridge. You can think of the end.

I also like the Boot series by Wolfgang Petersen and the author Buchheim.

Stalingrad is good although it is not the best warmovie I have seen.

That's amazing! I was looking for that this evening - but couldn't find it! It was made by BBC Film but there is nothing on the homepage except for an interview. I remember it so well because it gave a shocking and touching impression of the terrible dilemmas the soldiers had to take (couldn't evacuate the civillians etc. ) and the effects this had on the soldiers after their tour was ended. I almost started to cry when the lieutenant tried to kill himself after he went to N.I.

He also played "Hornblower" if I remember correctly.

The film also goes under the name "The Peacekeepers" but you won't find anything - not even at Amazon

I saw Stalingrad - very good movie as well.

I did see a Russian war movie some years ago. It was made either during or right after WW2 and it involved a soldier getting leave as a reward for killing two German tanks. Most of the movie is overly patriotic, but it is otherwise pretty good. Can't remember the name of it, though. sad_o.gif

Talvisota is pretty good. I heard that it had been criticized for being unrealistic when it was released. Something about the Russian tactics in the film? rock.gif

What "eh"? Control of the barrel after weapon cleaning. Usual business for recruits. Even worse: control by instructor (especially if he wears white gloves and examines the chamber... wink_o.gif).

But you're right, funny pic (on second view).

Hehe I can se the funny side of it though tounge_o.gif

I seem to remember that you are supposed to look inside the chamber and into the barrel - then stick your finger into the barrel entering via the chamber. Just make sure you can retract your finger before you put your gun away hehe

Well, this was with the AG3 at least.

Hehe that pic is so funny haha

I finally got Stalingrad earlier this month. Best war movie that I've probobly seen...

But it took nearly three months to get here. No joke. The guy I bought it from on Ebay was "kiting" it, so the shipment was late and through a fraud scandel I finally got the blessed thing. biggrin_o.gif

Unfortunately are the best films in germany produced for TV. In other words they are made for good acting performance and historical precision rather than special effects. Today for example there was a great great film about von Staufenberg (assassination attempt on Hitler).

One which I REALY RECOMMEND, is the story of Clemens Forell. He, as a soldier was sent to Kap Deschnew after war to work in a led mine. The film tells about his escape, with basically nothing: no russian language skills and no equippment but he was able to cross the most hostile environments 10200 kmon foot to return to germany, where he lived a happy life.

The film is not realy about war but tells a great great story about a journey and a soldier turning into an animal, barely able to speak after having crossing endless forests. A must see.

Rambo 1, Rambo 2, Ra........Joking.

What i'd like to see is a modern British WW2 film, a proper one (anyone watch that drama Dunkirk? It was good, but not exactly.....ermm thrilling....basically, Å2m budjet, so they end up using archive footage of germans advancing with the characters firing thier rifles at nothingness.....)....im so tired of SPR and BOB for the Americans. What we need is our own version (yet not a copycat).....man id love to direct that biggrin_o.gif

A dramatised recreation of the first thirty-six hours of the Falklands conflict focusing on the actions of the Governor and his subsequent expulsion and the inability of the islanders to comprehend the fact that their island was being invaded.

top notch and funny as hell biggrin_o.gif

Another good movie I wish to see "Silmido" (based on a true event)

                            5552.jpg

Here is the trailer (better quality)

trailer w/subtitles(bad quality)

And here is a little about the movie:

Quote[/b] ]The new domestic film ``SilmidoˇŻˇŻ mines a reliable source for high-powered domestic dramas in recent years _ how Cold-War politics turned individual lives into tragedies. But unlike the blockbusters ``ShiriˇŻˇŻ and ``Joint Security Area JSA,ˇŻˇŻ ``SilmidoˇŻˇŻ uses a real-life situation from the late 1960s, albeit one that the South Korean government would like to forget.

After a group of North Korean soldiers infiltrated Seoul and came very close to assassinating then-President Park Chung-hee, the South Korean government decided to do the same.

The title of the film comes from the remote island of Silmido, where most of story takes place. There, the government gathers a collection of criminals and outcasts, many off of death-row, and begins a secret project to train them and send them to assassinate the North Korean leader Kim Il-sung.

The majority of the film, which stars Ahn Sung-ki and Sul Kyung-gu and took over 10 billion won to make, is spent on showing the incredibly grueling military training that took place for two years on the island. The criminals are beaten regularly and subjugated to torture as part of their training, but with hopes of riches and a new lease on life if they succeed in their mission, this band of misfit brothers take what their instructors dish out and ask for more.

1st extract

2nd extract

I think that second extract was filmed at a bunker in the north that has been converted to a tourist destination. I've been there a few times.  The kiosk there, which sells coffee, is called "coffee anan"  tounge_o.gif

My great uncle (Z"L) had a similar story.  His family was killed by the nazi's in poland, but he escaped with a young newly orphaned boy he met and fled east.  He was captured by russian soldiers, and sent to a work camp in Siberia.  He escaped, and walked to Palestine, where the jews were fighting the British.  He joined the Irgun, and fought with them until the creation of the state of Israel, where he lived until the end of his life 2 years ago.  I know its a pretty unbelievable story, but, after meeting him, I have no doubts about it's authenticity.

Funny side note; he hated the Bbritish so much (he was a commited socialist), he refused to speak in English, even though he could speak it rather fluently.
