Bluesman 0 Posted September 3, 2003 This is my personal list and probably doesnt reflect the consensus here. Thin Red Line motivation:It's unusual for war-movies in that it takes the view point of a regular grunt in the battle of Guadalcanal. Often I can become tired in war-movies due to the constant shooting without the character depht. This movie has lots of depht while still being very realistic. It is also too slow paced for some but imho it reflects how the life of a grunt in a real war is, ie lots of waiting and marching and short but intensive fights. I also like the poetic style of the narration, it's a bit dreamy and makes you think abit on the nature of man. This movies ranks among the finest war movies I've seen at least. Winter War. If you can get hold of this. It's a very realistic and strong (mini actually) about the Winter War in Finland 39. Totally breathtaking experience. Unknown Soldier Another movie about the Winter War. It's more political than Winter War but it's still very well done and it won an Academy Award (one of Finlands few). Based on a book by Väinö Linna. Some others I recommend without comments(theyve been commented to death) Enemy at the Gates, Das Boot, BOB series, Stalingrad(it's among the weaker of my recommendations). Is this good enough? Tovarish 0 Posted September 3, 2003 Come and See Stalingrad
Bluesman 0 Posted September 3, 2003 Oops. How could i have forgotten? (have it in my DVD stand after all). Cross of Iron. Very good and realistic warmovie with the unusual point of view from German soldiers in the Eastern Front. Top notch acting and good battle scenes. It's one of the few WW2 warmovies where they actually got the tanks right. Come and See is very good but i'm not sure I'd rate it a War Movie. More like WW2 drama ala "Holocaust" (not soapy of course) BM BM
Postduifje 0 Posted September 3, 2003 Das Boot and Saving Private Ryan I'm also a great fan of Schindler's List and La Vita e bella, though they don't concentrate on the actual fighting as you probably know. They're all quite overknown and -seen, but I don't often rent or see random wwII movies.
lukemax 0 Posted September 3, 2003 Schindler's List! Schindler's List is a pro jew piece of crap and anti-German yet again made from the Spielberg point of view! its inaccurate and a un-true story made to look true! And if you dont agree with me! TRUTH HURTS!
Major Fubar 0 Posted September 3, 2003 Best movie I could recommend: Kelly's Heroes A great WW2 war/comedy/buddy movie...Donald Sutherland plays a particularly enjoyable character... And maybe in honour of Charles Bronson: The Dirty Dozen, The Great Escape... (And yes, I am aware there have been favourite war movie threads before, but all are 4 months + old)
Winters 1 Posted September 3, 2003 Stalingrad, The Great Escape, A Bridge too Far, Das Boot, The Dirty Dozen, Saving Private Ryan, and although its not a movie, Band of Brothers.

USSoldier11B 0 Posted September 3, 2003 I'd put SPR at the top of my list. I agree with Fubar that Kelly's Heroes is a good one, it's in my collection. I like the old black and whites too like the Longest Day and Patton. For some reason I really like the older black and white Navy WWII movies that are always on around 1:00 am. Personally, I though Thin Red Line was boring as hell. Documentaries are always good too.
Major Gripe 0 Posted September 3, 2003 Schindler's List!Schindler's List is a pro jew piece of crap and anti-German yet again made from the Spielberg point of view! its inaccurate and a un-true story made to look true! And if you dont agree with me! TRUTH HURTS! The movie is not anti German it is anti NAZI, if you can't recognise that difference you really shouldn't fling about such accusations. Also which parts are inaccurate (allowing for a certain amount of artistic leeway!)? As for movies..... The Guns of Navarone Catch 22 The Dambusters The Colditz Story Casablanca

Tex -USMC- 0 Posted September 4, 2003 Tex, you never heard of To Hell and Back? Audie Murphy was a native texan. Of course I've heard of (and seen) it. Too bad it's overall a fairly shitty movie. There are some good parts, but Audie was always a better soldier than actor. By the way, I've met Joe Foss, another Texan who won the Medal of Honor during WWII (Marine aviator). Cool guy.
