Why don`t military make things bigger

Recommended Posts

Thinking about ho everyone and their goat has started driving about in those silly 4x4s or SUVs as u lot on t he other side of the pond call em(quick children, get in the monster truck so can drive u a mile to school).Looking back on it,it started off here with ppl buying landrovers and other similiar vehicles and then the manufacturers cottened onto this and built all these silly vehicles like ppl carriers and hybrids between 4x4 and saloon cars and all the other odd oversize cars.

Now i get to the point of the thread, how come military vehicles are still smallish, what reason is there behind not having a gigantic tank or a bomber thats about the size of a city block that could of flattened iraq on one pass or even a collosal warship. Is it a case of not putting all ur eggs in one basket??

small vehicles = small target

It's also a case of physics in general. Actually material strengths. There is only so mcuh stress a metal or any alloy can take in twist, pull, push etc. The larger you make your vehicle the more prone it will be to sheer/cut/crush/bend the materials it is made of. Especially bearings.

There are limits to what's reasonable. And it goes all the way back to animal life as well, ever wonder why insects are so strong, tough and agile compared to mammals if you rescaled them? Because if you rescaled them the fibers and tissue they are made of would be crushed.

bigger vehicles = more fuel = logistical p.i.a.

True but if the vehicle just needed one recharge before going from frinedly  territory to hostile and back like the massive  bomber,it would probably attack fromm  insanely hih altitudes and bombs would zip down to the target like a skydiver falling out a plane,it would be out of range for most weapons and if interceptor planes did manage to reach it they weapons would be too weak to damage it assuming there isn`t some secret nuclear sidewinder missiles  tounge_o.gif

Would such a large structure  be harder to make in the same way if we hurled a person out of a tall building they would burst when they hit the ground whereas a spider would survive?

Not only did u beat me too  it but u worded it better  too bn880 wow_o.gif  tounge_o.gif i guesss i shouldn`t hit the reply button then go off and look at another webite before replying.

well , during coldwar , some first line interceptors in the US were fitted with nuclear rocket to intercept large bomber formations

I am all for the making of these babies:

leo-ms.jpg

Backbone Mobile Suit of OZ, model number OZ-06MS. The Leo design is based on that of Tallgeese, the predecessor to both Gundams (1) and Mobile Suits. The Tallgeese was too expensive to mass-produce, so the design was downgraded into the Leo. The standard Leo is the most common Mobile Suit of all, used by OZ for infantry, defense, and various common military tasks. Its many years of use are due to its adaptability- a variety of weapons and attachments can be given to a Leo, including a jetpack allowing for limited atmospheric flight. Three variant models also exist- the Leo Cannon Type, the Leo Early Type, and the Leo Space Type.

A few years backed I watched the show these uintis were in, the only thing we would have to overcome in real life is armor for these things. I can't think of any material type that could be produced in large quantity that could keep these things protected against a Medium Anti-Tank missle or a 120mm Sabot.

Ahh... Gundam Wing...

Any mobile suit has superior maneuverabilty to any armored vehicle currently in stock. Its more adaptable.(Hands are a good thing) Its probably faster too.

The military is now making things smaller. The reason for this is the ability to transport anywhere in the world. The military of today is one of mobility.

Bigger means you can transport more things, carry bigger guns, have more armor, whatever you're using it for. But smaller means it's going to be harder to hit, probably faster, and probably more fuel efficient.

Mate, size don't matter, it's what you do with it that counts  wink_o.gif

It was only a matter of time.... biggrin_o.giftounge_o.gif

Living in a country with really rough terrain I can also point out that bigger size means greater weight means bogging down becomes easier.

Unless its surface area was great enough to overcome this wink_o.gif

I think attack capabilities to size is another t hing to consider.

A crude example would be comparing a person versus a group of piranhas.Plus loads of little units can be in more places at once where as a big one can only be in the same place at once which is another reason why i think nature doesn`t have big animals but that would be more to do with the size of animal and the size of its food.

Who cares about surface pressure when you can fly?

See, the Japanese have thought of everything.

PS: For anyone who follows the Gundam Wing series, I always wondered what the name of one of the older Suits was. It has wheeled and had two large cannons on its back. I believe its name started with a "T", and it was in a couple of the earlier episodes. It seemed to be equipped in ESA equivilent of a Soviet "C" class Armored Regiment (Old crap like T-55s and BMP-1s)

if you are talking about Original Gundam series that aired in early 80s in Japan, it is called Guntank. tounge_o.gif

The operator was a tiny Japanese character named Hayato Kobayashi and Ryu Jose.

Sometime in the episode, Ryu Jose, who was wounded sometime eralier during infantry battle, kamikazes into incoming suicide aircraft with his fighter to protect Gundam which was holding off another suicide vehicle.

damn all those memories. tounge_o.gif

0079, 08MS, 0080, 0083, Z, Double Z, Char's Counterattack,F91

all those above are the Original theme of the Gundam U.C. history

others like V, W, X are not in the times line of the U.C. history

in many hard core fans eyes......

the worst 1, G, and newest 1, seed, dont even have any links to the U.C.

You guys need to stop watching cartoon robot porn and start watching quality programming, like FOX News and Dennis Leary. Wait, those two TV programs summarize all the things wrong with me.

So what do u think would be more effective for a mech.

A superhuge one or a fleet of little ones, which would remind me of a cloud of wasps if they were flying around tounge_o.gif

a 15 to 30 meters one , carrying reasonably sized weapons which would act in platoons
