Beer thread

Recommended Posts

Maybe, let's say: Better Äbbelwoi than the local beer "specialties" as Binding or Henninger... icon11.gif - For those who don't know: Äbbelwoi is a fruit wine close to Cider with a bit more alcohol than Pilsener (~5%vol.).

But back to beer: The best beer I drank in the last 12 months came from Castle Weesenstein near Dresden. I was there twice at the end of last year, the second time only for the beer (and a nice blond female wink_o.gif ). Weesenstein was badly damaged by flooding in 2002, dozens of houses were simply torn away, the castles baroque garden looked like Sodom and Gomorrha. sad_o.gif

Obi Wahn @ July 29 2003,08:33)]Outside Münster and the surrounding countryside? I fear not. sad_o.gif Here in Frankfurt, where I live now, it's impossible, but there is at least the "Wäldches" here... icon5.gif

Damn! you made me hungry again! mad_o.gifcrazy_o.gif  biggrin_o.gif

I might be a Noob in Hessian cuisine, but is Äpplewoi the same as usual Apfelwein? I never would drink more than half a liter of it, if it's the same stuff! tounge_o.gif

Lippe (where Gerhard Schröder originally comes from) has it's own liquors. we've got the "Lippischer Schütze" (the bottle is shaped like a soldier from the times when Lippe still was a principality), the "Feuerwehr (from my hometown Blomberg)", and "Kirli", a fine cherry liquor. smile_o.gif

LOL!

Getting older is no longer fun. I turn 22 on Saturday and I have exactly zero anticipation. sad_o.gif

I guess I can look forward to 25 since auto insurance rates drop. Then I can buy something with more than 4 cylinders. tounge_o.gif

I thought only Finland had more expensive alcohol than we have. Apparently not  wow_o.gif

Errrm...

Your forgetting Norway. I think we have the highest prices on boose. Beer costs almost 3 euro in the shops and 6 euro in pubs/bars/resturaunts. A glass of whiskey (Famous Grouse)can cost you almost 10 euros downtown. No wonder we swarm over the swedish border to smuggle boose back to Norway.

Duty Free rules are strict here too. You're only allowed to bring 2l beer, 1l wine and 1l liquer into the country. All beer over 5% alc. is strong beer and has to be imported and sold in state owned shops (meaning their also more expensive).

Thats why Norwegians tend  to look at the alcohol content before checking what make it is. biggrin_o.gif

My favorite beers are (when I can afford them):

Hansa (Norway)

CB (Norway)

Tennents (Scotland)

Tuborg (Danish only, hate the export stuff)

Ceres Royal (Danish)

Borsodi (Hungarian)

Aszok (Hungarian)

Gosser (Austrian)

Botsman (Polish)

Bud Ice (US)

+ loads more that I can't be bothered to mention.

Usually people bring suvenirs home when they travel abroad, I bring home beer glasses biggrin_o.gif

Quote[/b] ]Camra said its research showed more women would be willing to try beer if it was presented in more stylish glasses than ordinary pint pots.

I thought that was why halves were invented, so women could look more feminine when drinking beer? They shouldn't go down the continental route, I got a beer in Germany in a glass that was smaller than the thimble thingy ontop of mouthwash! I did like the fact that beer was by far cheaper than soft drinks or water, that would be welcomed in the UK!!

If you buy it in the shops, a 0,5l can costs almost 3 euro's.

In pubs a 0,4 glass would cost you 6 euro's (at nightclubs, even more expensive).

Beer can only be bought in shops at certain times of the day. This varies. In Stavanger, where I used to live, you could only buy beer until 6pm on weekdays and 3pm on saturday. Here in Haugesund (north of Stavanger) it's 8 pm on weekdays and 6pm on saturdays.

Alcohol content in liquer ranges from 40 - 50%, and you cant't buy it at your local supermarket. In Norway you can't get hold of 60% or over legally. This is one of the reasons why "moonshine" is so popular here. (the other reason is that it's a hell of a lot cheaper)

Although I prefer beer, I sometimes enjoy a glass of whiskey (Highland Park when I can afford it, otherwise Famous Grouse) or cognac now and then.
