Vixer wanted research, Vixer will get research...

The current strobe device you have modeling in your Seal Team 8 pack is the SDU-5E Marker Distress Light.  The SDU-5 was originally designed and built for pilots to be used to signal their location for SAR/CSAR crews at night.  It was eventually picked up by many ground units and Special Forces (Including: Rangers and SEALs).

SDU5p1Leg.jpg

The SDU-5 has a range of about 5 miles on a clear dark night.  However, with the addition of an Infra-red filter, the SDU-5 strobe can only be seen from night vision and FLIR equipment.

The most well known example of this is the movie Blackhawk Down where a soldier tosses a SDU-5 strobe equipped with an IR Filter on top of a highly occupied roof allowing the AH-6 pilots to see where to fire.

SDU-5E.jpg

Since the military started using the SDU-5 a new and more advanced Distress Strobe has been adopted, the MS2000.

Newms1.jpg

The MS2000 is brighter, has a longer battery life, and also has a built in IR filter.  The MS2000 also has a blue filter so that the strobe is not mistaken for gunfire, which could potentially be dangerous if an attack aircraft thinks your firing at it.

ms20002.jpg

For all intensive purposes, the MS2000 has replaced the SDU-5 for most military operations.  However, the MS2000 is much larger than the SDU-5 and requires two hands to operate.  For this reason, and since I've yet to see any pictures of SEALs using the MS2000, I'd say modeling the SDU-5 for your SEAL Team pack is a safe bet.

In conclusion, I'd say the most fail-safe way to determine which strobe to use for you pack, is to ask a real life Navy SEAL, which I suppose is harder than is sounds.  You'll have to excuse me as a go for a run to try to forget the fact I just wrote a small essay on Distress Strobes!  crazy.gif

Any who, hope this helps a little!

Great work BAS!  The latest screenies posted by Blackdog look almost real.  Gotta love the Mk23 SOCOM!  Just hope Blackdog keeps the screens coming, that truely shows just how talented these guys are.

Q:  Has BAS talked with CoC about possibly using their dive scripts on future SEAL Team releases?

Has the auto fire sound glitch been fixed with the new SEALS? That was the only negative with the Rangers and Delta.

As has allready been mentioned, the strobe lights are there for identification reasons.

If you are working in the dark bowels of a ship, being able to identify your team mates is very important.

The strobes in real life can operate on either normal light (the same as the flash in a camera) or on infra-red (which is more commonly used)

When on infra-red, only people wearing nvg's, or FLIR systems on helicopters/aircraft are able to see the strobe. Otherwise, it is invisable to the human eye.

As regarding making headshots easier, firstly, the flash is not like a floodlight, it is only a split second burst of light, about the same as a 120 watt light bulb. Secondly the flash often causes disorientation to anyone not used to it. For the simple reason that until you are used to it your pupils go crazy opening and closing to adjust to the light, this causes "whiteouts" and "blackouts" as the rods and cones in your eyes can not cope with the rapid change in pupil size. This is actually provides the SEALs with a VERY MINOR advantage over their adversaries.<span id='postcolor'>

So, can we expect thoes kind of featues with the addon?<span id='postcolor'>

I'll Be willing to bet we'll see something, like that, but as we all know BAS all covert and what not, kind of an Elite force of their own eh?

Q:  Has BAS talked with CoC about possibly using their dive scripts on future SEAL Team releases?

To be perfectly honest we already have our own swim scripts, developed before I knew about CoC.

So now I am deciding whether or not to make it CoC compatible. My current thought is not to bother, as our SEALS will have the specialized equipment that ordinary units are not trained in.

Earthcore

And ive got the vid converted to mpeg, it jumped from 7mb to 30 mb for the same quality, so no sight of uploading that yet wink.gif

About boarding anything in OFP.

Well is it possible at all? Like, Has anyone ever tried to place any tangos in the TOW LSD static, or worse tried to lead AI team members thru its corridors?<span id='postcolor'>

Thats due to the model, the AI can shoot through all the inner walls and can see you wherever you are on the boat, doesnt exactly make for good cqb, however these guys could be used for any general cqb in ofp, like attacking ports/harbours etc<span id='postcolor'>

I am not sure but maybe for boarding ships like LSD this will work if you guys use the script in Martins chopper that can floot if you guys inplant that script in the Seals and when they are at 1 meter near LSD that they can floot and can enter the LSD im not sure if you can make it work at certain points like 1 meter or 0.5 meter from object you can floot and than you have the option to get in

I have made a quick test 1 meter near LSD I made a trigger with martins floot script and used CoC Divers and they where able to get in the LSD without any troubles so maybe this is a idea to make the BAS Seals better wink.gif

I believe that green light is nothing more than a  green flare (like the one used by the MH-47 to pick up the rangers/deltas).
