Tales_From_Topographic_Oceans 0 Posted March 12, 2003 anybody know how much sea area square miles/kil (shipping area) that is accessible in the maps? I assume that when you get to the end of the map, you can't go any further. I think the RES map (Nogava spelling?) has more sea to use than the other official map. In other words, what's the sea's metes and bounds?

Guest Posted March 13, 2003 I've more or less finished the models for the torpedoes that will be included. If anybody has any additional requests, now is the time to make it. pzvg 0 Posted March 13, 2003 Actually if you rupture the fuel tank by dropping it, you'll get an explosion, not as large as the warhead, but still enough to kill exposed personnel within 10m. <we practice damage drills involving this a lot, since removing torps from a boat is very dangerous work>

Yes you are right. I forgot about the fuel. Well, I'll just implement a smaller explosion if it is dropped on the ground

I assume it's Russian.. Another question: is it guided or just a straight shooter? I have a hard time thinking that any sonar would work at that speed. I assume it's Russian..<span id='postcolor'> I think it's "And your mother, too!"<span id='postcolor'> Quite correct The shkval is a "Your Mama too.." type of weapon. It's primary use is as a revenge weapon. If somebody fires a torpedo at you and you realize that you are screwed then you launch a shkval in the direction of the incoming torpedo. </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote (chris @ Mar. 16 2003,04:58)</td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE"> Another question: is it guided or just a straight shooter? I have a hard time thinking that any sonar would work at that speed. <span id='postcolor'> Sonar is useless because of the envelope of compressed air and water that's created around it. Magnetic gradients can be used however on short range (<< 100 m) to get a bearing of large ferromagnetic objects (ships, subs). There are three types of Shkvals: 1) Unguided. Detonates on impact/magnetic contact. First generations of Shkvals worked like that. 2) Directed/guided. The Shkval gets targeting data from the ship/sub it is launched from. It maps a linear path and supercavitates to the target. Once near the target it slows down, makes a course correction with active sonar and then engages the secondary boosters. The Skval-E, export version of the rocket uses this principle. 3) Short range guidance. This version uses a method called magnetic signature vectoring (MSV). The guidance system scans for magnetic signatures of ships. This works without problem at high speeds. Once a signature is detected it slows down and makes an acoustic confirmation of the contact and makes the necessary course corrections. It then proceeds at half the speed towards the target. The MSV works only at very short ranges so your aim has to be pretty good from the start. Shkval-R, Shkval-L and Shkval-K use this type of guidance and that's the one I use in the game. Guest Posted March 16, 2003 Here are some screenshots of the shkval in action. You can also see the newly implemented "splash" effect upon the impact of the torpedo.
