What do you think is the easiest?

Recommended Posts

In your experience, which is the easiest aircraft to handle in Cold War Crisis? I have jus recently went Sam Nicolls (the pilot), and have gotten pretty far in the game. Anyway, onto the main post.

In my experience, I find helicopters ludicrously hard to pilot, even more so to land! The first heli mission, where you have to convoy some troops from one area to another... it took me about 20 minutes to land, pick them up, transport, land and unload, and pick up more guys! And the attack mission? Don't get me started on that! I could hardly fire the missiles. So I stopped playing the campaign for a while and started doing Mission Editing (which is what inspired me to join this forum).

But, eventually, I got past it.

Now, I'm not trying to bash helicopter fans, it's my own opinion and I respect them.

Now, as for the planes. 'Taking Off'(or whatever that mission was called) was a bit fiddly, with the AI moving slower than I did (crashed into them loads of times). After I got into the air, funas hell! Easier than helicopters, I can tell you!

Anyways, tell me what you think... biggrin.gif

Well, first time was hard for me too, but after a few hours in a helicopter, it wasn't hard anymore. Once u get familiar with controls it's so easy you can't even imagine. Flying a chopper in OFP can be really fun. Just never give up. Be sure that you're always using manual fire when flying a helicopter. It makes things much easier.

Welcome to the forum, bud.

As for the choppers: I recommend you start learning to fly with the Kiowa scout or the Cobra. They are the easiest choppers to fly with the most responsive controls.

When you think you handle those well you can try out the others one by one. A little hint: save the CH47 Chinook and the MI-17 Hip for the last. They are very sluggish and can be a beast to handle. smile.gif

If you find landing too difficult, you can always use "Auto-hover" action. I think with the help of this action landing should be pretty easy.

But Suma, that's cheating tounge.gif

Anyway, I think the first time I did that mission I took ages to land as well, even with auto-hover on smile.gif

It was 'cause I keep going too fast...so I'd end up overshooting the LZ and pulling up heaps ( 'cause I didn't know how to slow down any other way biggrin.gif )

I got the hang of choppers when I started editing, as I decided to scout for perfect locations in a helicopter...to get a better view of the scenery (and since flying is fun smile.gif )

i think the helicopters are very easy to handle.

if you have trouble with slowing down before landing, this might help:

switch 600m before you're over the LZ to auto-hover and the helicopter will slow down immediatly and it should stop over the LZ. but it will also get into a higher position so that you don't need to be afraid of crashing into a tree or something else. smile.gif

The choppers and planes in OFP are TOO easy to handle.

Try a good chopper/plane in FS2002, and you will see what the difference is

But for a tactical simulation, its good enough, it isnt a flightsim, but its the guns what count..

Well, I think that the choppers are easy, but it is allmost better that FS2002, you can't turn around completly in FS, and I don't think it's harder to fly anyway...

For the planes, It is both easyer and more realistic in FS 2002, and the veiw distance is much too short if OFP...

How ever, as a simulator that can handle both aircrafts and cars, and be the best war simulator that i have played, OFP is great... smile.gif

Everyone says OFP's flight model is too easy, and then they log onto a server and crash the chopper I'm riding shotgun in.

That being said, the UH60 is the most basic helo, and is the benchmark that I use,

Search the forums for discussions about flying and joysticks. You might perhaps find some good hints. Try flying the chopper with a Joystick. Its more difficult to aim then but on the other hand it's nicer to fly and steer.

BlackHawks are the easiest to fly. Most maneuvarable (can't spell today tounge.gif ) You can fly these babys at or below 5 altitude with a little practice. Cobra is the trainee vehicle for attack aircraft. The Apache is probably the same, but for some reason seens a little bit more complicated. Use those then go onto the Hind. (Mi-24) It's probably one of the hardest attack choppers to fly. Stay away from the MI17 (A.K.A. Fat Bird. I like to call it that just cause of the way it handles.) And the Ch-47 (Chinook).

Chinook handles a bit better than the MI 17. But don't fly it like an attack aircraft (As I often do). I don't mean strafing with an MG, I mean the maneuvering. You can lose a lot of speed flying that like an apache tounge.gif

The MI17 (Fully loaded with missles) is a great weapon. As a transport chopper, it does have something to be desired. It's more for really good pilots. (Anyone can pilot, but only a really good one can do it some what well).

If you really need to learn how to fly Planes, go into the mission editor and do this:

Set a Cessna on the runway. Fly that, get basic maneuvers down. Rolling, bugging out, diving, climbing, evading. Low flying etc. Then go onto the Camels. This will give you the idea of dog fighting. Then use the A10, and fianally the Su25. Su25 is the hardest IMO, because it can be very sensitive.

If you bothered to read all that good for you tounge.gif I'm quite sick and I'm not sure how much actually made sense, but what the hell smile.gif

i think the fastest way to land without shooting up into the air like with auto hover, is to pull as hard as you can either left or right while moving forward. you can bleed alot of speed quickly that way, without being exposed to fire.

I thought the MI 17 was the easiest one to fly of them all. It was the heli I first flew in when I started using the editor, basically because it made a great missle platform tounge.gif , and Vipercheese is right, turning left or right and pointing the nose down is the best way to land a helicopter. I usually straighten out at about 600m from the target at 30-45 m off the ground, making sure not to go faster than 140mph, and I do little pulls to slow down my speed and then when almost right over the target I turn right and push the nose forward and land.

Although I find Airplanes to be a real pain to fly! I spend most of my time trying not to lose control or crash into the ground! crazy.gif

Ya, on keyboard hold E, A, X and that aims your nose and and whips you fast. If the timing is right, you just have to straighten out the chopper and go down slowly smile.gif

Helicopters, to me, are the easiest to fly. I simply cannot fly the planes without crashing.

Maybe when I first started playing I would overshoot the LZ with the choppers.I find them easy to pilot now and very deadly.I just plan my landings now (comes 2nd nature now) and kill some speed before you get there.I like the choppers in the game.

The planes I wish were more forgiving slightly, just that they should be able to take off most anywheres you have length.

I remember first playing the game I would land on the islands and take off, don't think they fly like that now,I haven't driven the Cessna in a while,so dunno, but I think they go slower without a runway now last I tried

I find that helos are easiest to fly with mouse and keyboard while basic throttle stick is great for planes.

Same here, I can whip the Mi17 around like cake with my keyboard and mouse. Flying is easy once you get used to it.

It is all down to personal preference... I can fly the MH-47 right on the limits of its performance (really really fast and really really low) yet still retain accurate landings and fast insertions. What do i use: Joystick/keyboard...

I'm useless at flying with the mouse.. it just isn't as responsive...

but like i said, its all down to what your used to, and how much practice you've had...

once you learn each aircrafts little quirks and habits you can fly to avoid them, or to counteract them... you just have to get used to it...

I cant pilot choppers with my joystick becuase of the control "issues" with it like the rudders disabling themselves etc but the planes work ok and i can get do reasonobly well with key control for choppers.

I prefer the su-25 over the a-10 becuase it seems faster and more manouverable and i like the mi-17 cause it has a shitload of rockets.

My usual way to land or slow down quick is either to pull back and descend or to pull back and to the side while using the rudder o further help turning then straighten out once i`ve slowed down enough smile.gif

hehe, my joystich has built in twist-rudder tounge.gif

like i said, its all to do with experience and personal preference

I prefer flying choppers with keyboard and mouse. I use my cougar+rcs for planes only.
