Machine guns added to store's inventory By MARK TODD Staff Writer CONNEAUT - With enough cash and the proper pedigree, folks who shop at Rose Lumber Yard can leave with a bag of nails, sheets of drywall - and an M60 machine gun. Within the past few months, owner Tim Rose added firearms to the inventory of his store. A special federal license allows Rose to sell machine guns, short-barreled shotguns and silencers in addition to traditional handguns, rifles and shotguns. The high-powered sideline is an extension of Rose's interest in rapid-fire ordnance. "I've been a collector for 13 years and interested in machine guns, automatic weapons and suppressers the past 10 years," he said. "The exotic stuff." After consulting with close friends who were gun merchants, Rose decided to become a dealer and acquired the necessary Class 3 federal license needed to sell the weapons and accessories. The bulk of his business has been in the smaller stuff, but he has sold a half-dozen specialty pieces - including automatic weapons - to collectors living outside of Ohio. "I've done some locating of pieces for people and have done a lot of special ordering," Rose said. "I haven't done any advertising, but I've done more business than I ever thought I would. Word-of-mouth has helped." A modest display of small arms greets customers to the lumber yard, a Conneaut icon for more than 80 years. "People are surprised and say, 'You can't sell those things. They're illegal,'" Rose said. "Well, no. You've always been allowed to own these guns. If you've got the money and are qualified, you can own anything out there." A fat wallet is a definite prerequisite for folks interested in military-style hardware. Depending on the gun, the price tag on a fully-automatic weapon will start in the thousands-of-dollars range, Rose said. The cost of a unique or vintage piece can easily reach five figures - or higher, he said. That wasn't always the case. Years ago, machine guns could be had for a few hundred dollars. Through most of the 1930s, a Thompson submachine gun could be purchased by private citizens at the local gun or hardware store. But in 1986, the government halted the manufacturer of machine guns for private purchase, Rose said. Collectors were now limited to the supply already in circulation, and that - combined with Internet inquiries - has sent prices through the roof, Rose said. "It's an expensive hobby," Rose said. "Once you get bit by the bug, it's bad." But even someone flush with cash will be denied a purchase if he doesn't pass muster with local police. Buyers must purchase a $200 federal tax stamp, be fingerprinted and secure a formal endorsement from the local law enforcement agency. "There never has been a crime committed with a legally registered machine gun," Rose said. "A criminal doesn't want to go through the process." Police Chief Jon Arcaro said the local department has purchased equipment with Rose's help and he has demonstrated some weapons at the police range. "We are aware of what he's doing and we have had no problems," he said. "(Rose) is a responsible businessman." Lumber and building material still comprises the bulk of Rose's business, but a fair number of people visit to talk and shop for firearms, he said. "There has been some increased interest," Rose said. <span id='postcolor'> pleasures of being a Ohioan really got sweeter!
