I guess this war is far from being over. It´s only getting more dirty.

I am afraid that the war isnt going to just suddenly end because Baghdad falls. But we will see, hopefully this is the end of the armed conflict. Then the politicians will enter the trenches.

You could say the war has reached its 'climax'.

The battle for Baghdad was supposed to be the Iraqi Government's 'last stand', so unless large numbers of the Republican Guard have fallen back to Tikrit, or some other place, I daresay once Baghdad falls, the rest of the war might break down to 'mopping up' efforts.

If Baghdad falls as it indeed seems to be happening at the moment, It's hard to imagine any possible Republican Guards launching counter-attacks from Tikrit or making fierce last stand there. If they were to put up a serious fight, they would have done it already. Saddam's regime is extremely unlikely to survive after fall of Baghdad.

I heard on the radio this moring the latest thing that comic said was that "God will grill the (American) bellies in hell" (or something, not sure, was laughing too much).

WTF, God... in hell? Sure... God is in hell and Jesus is the doorman of a strip club.

This summer, my town got a Comedy festival. This guy should really get an agent and come and so some shows.

I don't know- it's possible there are more than a few *former* Republican Guard in those cheering crowds.

Huge Saddam statue just toppeled. Very emotional moment, brings back memories when Berlin wall came down and failure of hard-liner coup in Moscow.

I agree, this was pretty powerful.  There is still much to be done and a long long way to go, but this was a major step for the psyche of the Iraqi people.  I'm happy for them.

EDIT: Just wanted to add that I'm glad that statue didn't crush anyone when it came down. That might have sent the wrong message.

ooops... they almost spoiled the moment by draping the American flag on that statue for a few minutes, didnt go down well with the Iraqi's, what were they thinking of?

Anyhow a very symbolic moment for all involved there, quite amazing scenes, hope it will be replayed throughout Iraq and the people can begin to feel free at last...

Just watched a report from Baghdad from Ĺsne Seierstad. She said that there are mixed feelings in Baghdad that a lot of people are happy and that they are expressing their rage against Saddam while there are lot of people who say that it's no good with an American occupation.

She says that there are no more Iraqi military or government officials in Baghdad. The only left are some small paramilitary units that seem to be more interested in harassing reporters and looting.

So Baghdad has fallen

I wouldnt disagree with you on that. But exiled Iraqi observers didnt like it one bit. Fortunately the situation turned out ok.

Sure it was an important moment for the Marines too, I can understand that, they were proud of their achievements in having fought to get to Baghdad in the first place. But there is a time and a place for everything, and that was the wrong moment to fly the American flag like they did. Hopefully no harm done and it wont detract from what the coalition has achieved.

I thought that it was going to happen on Monday the 14th. I've had some disturbing parallel development here. You see, they are changing the plumming in my building and they started the same day that the war started. The reached my floor the same day that US troops entered Baghdad. My appartment is going to get invaded on 14/4 so I assumed that it would happen something similar in Baghdad

Right now we should set up a goverment and get the fuck out. Then the country can fall apart without coalition soldiers underneath it. I think that if the US and British forces are planning on staying for a while then you will get Iraqi resistance groups that will do two dead soldiers a day deal and the public back here will go ballistic calling it an occupation etc.

No, you should help the country and not let the UN clean the mess.
