Vietcong-game

Recommended Posts

I downloaded the blood patch (what?), and the only thing i found added was gore. Nobody ever swore beyond what was heard in the US version, and there definately were no racist remarks. However I like the gore, it adds realism to the game. smile.gif

Hate to bring up this old thread but I just got vietcong. I have to say I'm impressed and disappointed.

First off, I'm tired of seeing M2s on helicopters. I've seen maybe one or two M2s mounted on a helicopter, it's much more common to have an M60 or possibly a minigun. But OFP and vietcong both have an M2 mounted on the helicopter.

Speaking of M60s, what on earth happened to the one in this game? No bipod? No forward sight? That bugged me to no end. Plus the sounds made it sound like ringing a small cowbell really fast.

On the other hand, the game was really immersive, had a pretty nice campaign, and (aside from the M-60) good weapons.

I have Vietcong, the mature version. I can blow off arms and legs and my teammates scream things like "motherf****r" in combat wow.giftounge.gif

Really, the game is a refreshing FPS that has a new theme and is relatively realistic. VC isn´t nearly as realistic or dynamic as OFP, they´re in completely different leagues, but OFP could learn a few things.

Some things I liked about VC compared to OFP:

-Usage of cover. Jungle fighting makes cover like trees and rocks essential. Also, this is the first FPS I have played where the AI give a damn about their own asses. They move crouched and pop in and out of cover, making them very hard to hit. They also camp and lean around corners.

-Extended firefights. In OFP battles are pretty short since everyone is so accurate, there´s little cover and no one uses it, and grenades are used to devastating effect.

In VC your teammates or the enemy are often very inaccurate and everyone stays in cover, allowing you to flank the enemy! You can really decimate an enemy squad by sneaking around the back.

-Iron sights. In VC the iron sights are completely 3D and extremely realistic.

-Realistic weapons, altough there are way too many muzzle flashes and some weapons sound very wrong, like the RPD, M60 and Thompson, to name a few. But anyway, the reload animations are top notch. I often use the Mosin-Nagant and other bolt-action rifles because the recharge animation looks beautiful and the sounds of the well-oiled parts moving after you´ve fired a round are so delicious.

-Optional explosion whistle after explosion. This might be something for OFP2.

All other pros can be attributed to scripting.

Some things I hate are:

-The AI bunny-hopping when they´re stuck, also sometimes the AI hits the dirt, stands, and hits the dirt again and just generally acts like complete fools.

-A BIG AI problem: They ALWAYS block doorways and tunnels so that you can´t get out. ALWAYS. You´re completely screwed if you quicksave in a narrow tunnel and discover that your whole team has followed you.

-Clipping and death animation problems, VC could really use a "ragdoll" effect. If an enemy dies next to, say, a rock, the death animation can get completely screwed up so it plays a couple of meters above ground and when he´s dead the corpse floats back to the ground. Corpses can also get stuck inside walls, and what´s more, halfway up the wall!

Plus some stuff like scripted and pipe-like levels, but only OFP has that problem solved.

Sounds way too unrealistic for me to part with 30 odd quid for. It looks great, but give me poorer graphics and better gameplay any day. Shame.. it looked really good. But personally I can't get on with games that do not go for proper simulation type game play. I certainly couldn't handle the AI flaws it sounds like it has. I think we will wait a long, long time before anyone comes up with anything like as reliable and realistic as OFP. Sorry but after playing this game I just won't trust anything else that does not definitely at least equal it. OFP set the standard, if others can't beat it they wont get my money wink.gif

How do you get that? I'm tired of seeing whole bodies flying around like dead supermen after I waste them with an M79.

Oh yeah, I did that so many times. Sometimes by accident. I'd just be ramboing around, rushing a trench (I LOVE that, trenches, beautiful, makes me feel like I'm on a real chunk of earth instead of just running around on a giant unshapable rock like OFP). Then I'd end up turning around and fighting my way back to my team.

If you wait and walk into them for a few seconds, 30 seconds maybe, seems like forever, they'll eventually turn around and let you go. But if you're lined up against your whole team it could take a while.

I noticed the exact opposite. The bodies would ragdoll with the terrain. If they fell against a rock they'd bend with it instead of falling through it. Sure it was a little buggy, but better than nothing.

This made me mad. Remember that incredibly long tunnel mission where you have to sneak through an enemy village at the end? I somehow managed to sneak through the village and was wandering alongside the edge of the map to avoid detection. I wasn't about to get caught by charlie splashing around in a creek on my way to the extraction point. So I ended up missing a few important triggers and spent a long time wandering around the ruins, even behind them, until I gave up and tried again the next day via the creek. mad.gif

If you want my opinion, wait until the price goes down. Prices usually go down after the games popularity wears off. It's win-win: you pay less and don't have to deal with the bugs that turn up in the first few months after release.

Dunno, I can just choose between English (Mature), and English in the start menu, I have the Finnish version.

The drill instructor is so foul-mouthed that it takes a loong time for him to say anything in between the swearing.

Your teammates swear a lot in combat, like "GOOK MOTHERF****RS! Or just "F**k you!" Your character does the same when he talks, saying "shit" a lot. It isn´t Kingpin-style overdone and is quite realistic.

Artillery, multiple knife hits and the M2 on the helo deforms bodies. Grenades sometimes do the same, but less frequently.

And about the ragdoll-I know they have a very primitive ragdoll system that rarely works properly, but don´t you otherwise agree on the animations and clipping?

Pretty minor fault, anyway.

Yeah the clipping bugged me a lot, but the only solution I can think of is to just make the AI walk-through-able (I'm sure there's a better word for that).

Anyway, i had this idea for DOD too. It REALLY bugs me when people block me in on a ladder or small hallway or even around a corner when I just poke my head out to take a look and get stuck on another player.

*vents*

Anyway, I'll see if I have that option...

edit - nope, I don't. where do you see it in the start menu?

In the setup screen before you start play (where you choose resolution and colours), there´s a language selection menu in the bottom right corner.

It should probably be on "english" for you, while I have English mature, Francais or Espagnol options. I´m not sure you have that option in your U.S version? Oh the installer actually asked me if I wanted the English mature or English version.

I wish I could find the Unsensored version.Other than that I find this game to be the best Vietnam based game out.Dispite some of the cons the game has.Like for example.the main character looking like one of those Bucked toothed hill billys.

the mouth movement wasn't very coordinated, made the characters look stupid sometimes.

ugh, and i couldnt stand it when the pointman would say "we wait for otha..." aside from having to go back and see what was holding up the end of the line, the way he said "otha...." bugged me to no end.

Show me one good game that does not have an idiotic look for most of the game FS Pilot:

If I remember correctly, the US version had the swearing removed, and the German version has blood and gore censored.

Don't want it warping your fragile little minds.

Either find a patch,or get the British version. Thats non censored.

Vietcong Jungle is a joke, walls everywhere. Total lack of immersion.

How can you say that!, it may look horrible when you walk into an edge of the game but it's still immersive. OFP and ProjectIGI are the only two games I can think of that don't have boundrys. I am really surprised with this game as (as I said before) I thought it was absolute tosh when I first played it, but if someone put abit of love into it,(rather than the devs, the less the more[£$%] attitude) it would shine. Which brings me to the point of trying to start a conversation about Vietcong: Is there a modding comunity anywhere? Are there any comunity made tools available for it? (file unpackers) I really want to change the porno'cum'elevator music that plays when you die to a Hendrix track (all along the watchtower maybe, start in with: "There must be somekind..."). I know there is a multiplayer map editor out but I'm more interested in modding the game for SP. Have any of the more creative modders taken any interest in this game at all?...

I've not been able to find any sites or info sad_o.gif ...

Why does the 'british pound sign' make: £ appear instead of the british $ equivalent? rock.gif ...
