Goodbye, ArmA 2!

Recommended Posts

OH what a sad day. I crippled my ArmA 2 directories and only left whats needed (maps basically). I realized, I play ArmA 3 most of the time. There won't be a return probably.

But I feel bad now. Had good times with Arma 2.

I hear you. It's getting very near the end of A2 for me also. Great ride while it lasted.

snappy video

You cared enough to bother posting an embedded video. I'd say that's 1000% more caring than all the forum members who simply did nothing.

:) Many people are/were in this painful situation, struggling with themselves :D I often thought about it. Now it happened and I still feel bad, haha. Also because I know of many fantastic user made missions, which I will never have played. But there's so much content in the world of gaming.

That, and with mods such as All in Arma Terrain Pack and Community Upgrade Project, there's a solid chance that a bunch of those missions can be ported or remade for Arma 3.

Since you're a Steam user, you can enter your retail keys and get all of A2 + DLCs for free if you haven't already (assuming the Arma anniversary offer is still present), so it doesn't matter if your A2 directories were borked. It's even a snap to switch between the crash-prone 1.63 "stable" and the much better 1.63.112555 beta.

I stick to ArmA 2 which is the last game I bought form BIS therefore ArmA2 isn't dead for me. Hell I sometimes fire up even good old OFP. The end is always coming . . . you stopped playing ArmA 2 I stopped purchasing ArmA titles from BIS. LOL Sometimes I'm reading a bit on the ArmA 3 forums just for the LULZ and man I'm telling you this community is going to shits. I'm not hanging around on the forum anymore as I used to before. That's life LOL. Gotta a lot of other things to do and the time has come for me to dedicate myself elsewhere. It was nice as long as it lasted.

Cheers :bounce3:

In a decades time, players of mil/sim type games will look back at A2CO and probably think, that was, and still is, the one game to beat for mil/sim realism.

Of course it has to be modded for AI and to have many types of vehicles, infantry, aircraft, islands etc, but the beauty is, its all there available for the player. The movement system isn't as good as A3, but its still holds up when using SMK, plus of course ST_movement to help avoid those doorway problems (I used these mods in the past, really good).

I won't ever leave A2CO behind, its far too good, much better in immersive game-play for me than A3 could ever be. But its personal choice, most all of the players I know have either stuck with A2CO or come back to it after playing A3 for some time. I will be testing in A3 soon for an AI mod, but it still isn't to the standard of A2CO with modded AI.

Also I want the enemy dead in a single 'good' shot, rather than having to use another 4 shots in some cases to get the result. I don't want to stick a jab in my leg and go back to normal if I'm seriously injured, I want to be airlifted out and watch as my team (on many occasions a modded AI team) get me out of the action and to safety, even having to keep enemy at bay. I don't want an AI team just engage when the odd's are stacked against them, I want them to assess the situation and get to their wp, even if that means falling back and going around the enemy. I don't want to see endless move forward at any cost, I want to see teams fall back if needs be, then far flank left or right or call support, whatever it needs for the situation but to try and stay alive. I want convoys to run properly, heli's to stay out of harms way and fire from a distance if at all possible, plus once hit to assess the damage and return to base if that is what is needed and send in another heli. I want armour to get out of the action if hit and damaged too badly, for teams to set up medical tents to the rear for injured. Have teams communicate with one another and form sensible attacks, to bring in support when needed. Have all troops on the ground to use buildings effectively inc doorways and windows, to use cover and go to cover (hard cover if available) and to use it well and plan a responce rather than just go straight in. For all units to use correct stance for whatever they're doing. To use smoke grenades, grenades, launchers, etc in a human-like effective way, combine smoke and suppression effectively. To be picked up from a mission by a boat up-river or coastline, or accurate heli pick-up. Team mates to drag their wounded to safety and attend them or evac them out if they can (that may mean a couple of team members moving to the rear with the injured to call in evac). I want teams to carry out surveillance and report info back.

I want all that and soo much more, its all there for A2CO. That's all AI teams I talk of there, not human players.

Can't do any of that in A3 with vanilla, or modded AI that's readily available. They (AI) just forget about the injured and move on. Yes, you can mod it, but it still isn't to the standard of modded A2CO AI, which can and will do all of the above plus much more, that's only a fraction of what they can do in-mission.

Nope I won't be saying goodbye to A2CO anytime soon..:D

I play A3, but really its testing for others. For an immersive mission, I always come back to A2CO, you simply can't beat it imo..

I still understand why players want to move on. But I've been pc gaming, no, war-gaming, for so long, that once I found something I wanted for years.. and that was Arma (1) for me (at release), then onto A2, then through to A2CO, (the best of the series when you have them all inc dlc's), I just could not give that up easily.

I would give it up, if A3 had proved to be A2CO+1, but it doesn't for me, its simply made easier for mainstream players, with much of the immersive factor, took out. Yes tvt/pvp can be great in A3, but once you include AI to carry out any part in your mission, your stumped, there isn't an AI mod that does it justice in A3. There are some good AI mods for A3, but they don't achieve what other mods can for A2CO, just a fact really..

But who cares, its all personal opinion and depends on how you play or who you play the game with. For me, I'm just really pleased we still have A2CO and the support of mod/addon makers that still make it 'the' mil/sim style game to beat...............:bounce3:

That said all of the above requires mission making and using the Editor, if you don't want to do that, then perhaps A3 is a better alternative, because most all good AI mods, require you to make your own missions, using those AI mods in mind for a unique mil/sim gaming experience..

Classics never die, and A2/CO has certainly achieved Class status.

Someday those who would sail away will hear the siren song and be lulled back to its rocks, seeking a little more "hurrah."

--- Edit --

The developers create the Masterpiece. The gamers, modders and community make it the Masterpiece. Without the developers, there would be no Masterpiece. Thank you BIS!

I am currently reinstalling A2CO, I just can't get into Arma 3. 2300 hours total in Arma 2, 58 in Arma 3.
