DarkLight 0 Posted August 22, 2002 So is it possible that after a while your tracer ends because there's no more 'Red Tracer element' inside your bullet?

According to machinegunners that I've worked with, this is because tracers tend to burn out at this range -- by definition, if you can't tell where you're hitting, you're not going to be effective. It's a steady line that just licks the ground and looks amazing. Tracers are optional in OFP. Just go to the difficulty settings and tracers can be turned on/off COLINMAN<span id='postcolor'> That's true, but even with tracers turned off machine guns still have each bullet as a tracer. Â Do real life M60 and M2 machine guns have each bullet as a tracer ? I doubt it. It's also pretty crappy that you're allowed to see tracers no matter which direction they're coming from. From what I know about tracers and how they work, then they should only be visible from 90* side angle and back behind. Not to mention how crappy tracers look in Flashpoint. Â Couldn't they do something about that ?
Assault (CAN) 1 Posted August 28, 2002 Sorry, I hate to revive an old post, but what the hell. </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Maximum effective range of the M240G (7.62mm) is 1800m<span id='postcolor'> 1800m is the max range in the 'sustained fire' role (ie: mounted on a tri-pod) The max range in the light role (using the bi-pod on the gun) is 800m. </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">According to machinegunners that I've worked with, this is because tracers tend to burn out at this range (1800m) <span id='postcolor'> 7.62 NATO tracer rounds burn out at about 800m, which varies slightly from round to round. As for the .50, I'm not sure, I've never used it. (yet) The M2 .50 cal's effective range is obviously greater than 1830m. I think the max range for both weapons is set at 1800m because it is unlikely that people can see clearly beyond that range without optics. I have shot car-sized targets at 950m with the FN MAG (M240) and the object appears to be smaller than the front sight post. So it is really hard to get on target, as you were saying. When shooting at armoured targets past tracer burn-out range, I listen for the "tink-tink-tink" sound of the rounds impacting the metal to confirm a hit. The gun controller will have binoculars anyway, so he can look for the 'splash' of the rounds hitting the dirt around the target. </span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">That's true, but even with tracers turned off machine guns still have each bullet as a tracer. Linked 7.62 NATO, 5.56 NATO, and even most .50 cal ammo belts come from the factory with a 4 ball to 1 trace ratio. The only way to remove it is to do it by hand, which is a long process and is hard on your hands. I wouldn't worry about tracers giving away my MG position, the enemy can still hear the sound and see the muzzle flash and the smoke pouring off the red-hot gun. I agree the tracers in OFP suck.
