The vignette effect at the edge of the screen

Recommended Posts

In Arma 2, the screenshot would show a single-colored sky. In Arma 3, we have a dark vignette effect at the edge of the screen unrelated to any fatigue or health effect on the player.

It's not readily apparent in all situations but it seems we're stuck with this kind of effect in Arma 3 with no way to change it. Personally I feel it creates an uncomfortable subconscious feeling of tunnel vision even if it doesn't conceal anything, and the non-smooth gradient looks really bad in some cases. I'm not really sure what the effect's purpose is.

Does anyone else have a problem with this? I think one should have the option to disable it.

Didn't knew it existed but was under the impression that something wasn't "right".

I don't mind it.

It makes it look like you are looking through the eyes of a soldier!

  so immersion arma 3
          wow
                     bis
 reality virtuality
                            realism
  wow

Absolutely. And I would indeed turn it off in an instant if it was an option.

I don't really have an issue with it in general, but the gradient just makes it non-pleasing. If the gradient was actually smooth and didn't produce the noticeable oval/bubble/thing, I'd be fine with it. As is, it's just ugly and honestly doesn't make much sense to me. I'd be curious to know what the intended "effect" here is supposed to be.

Maybe "fight" the peripheral indicators?

Not gonna lie, I lol'd. :D

When I asked about it last year, the answer I got was along the lines of "Mass Effect and other games do it these days".

Isn't that part of the fatigue effect?

Gets stronger the more tired and out of breath you are...

The vignette is there even with 0 fatigue.

Try to find the script code causing it. Once located one can determine the ways to disable it by addon/in a mission.

If there should be a game option or it removed altogether are different questions.

I agree that the vignette should be optional at least. The very noticeable banding makes it look bad.

+1 - Thanks for the leg work Celery.

My overriding thought process here has been this should be relatively easy to deal with in house. I would argue that perhaps the question, "Should there be an option, or should it be removed?", is indeed the appropriate question to be asking. As both are specific options to the core issue, and are reasonably logical directions to go with it. Outside of that, we're really just left with ... "it stays as is". And the option of community fix becomes the only relevant option.

Now whether or not that matches up with some backend function of dealing with things, is beyond me. I'm trying to understand the comment though. :)

*edit*

Meh, I'll go hunt it down and see if I can make a fix for it. Should be relatively trivial. There are many other things I'd rather see the devs dealing with right now.

How come there is so much of that banding in Arma 2/3 Dwarden? It's really noticable at night, I always just see loads of stripes/hoops when I look at the sky. I take it there is nothing that can be done about that?
