Bohemia, when you add jets please make them crash realistically :)

Recommended Posts

Yeah when I read the OP and the subsequent replies on the first page I came to the last page to reply with basically exactly what you wrote. The way OP even demonstrated the desired effect with a very simple yet accurate image representation is even better.

I didn't see a ticket anywhere, I'll re-check the OP for one. If not someone should make one asap so this can get coded in before the game goes gold and jets can nose dive into the ground and bounce off with some damaged, black model. That's not how it goes in real life, not even close. I'd love to see Arma 3 represent the true nature of jet crashes done properly.

+1 OP.

thanks!

I kind of hope Jets are NOT added.

Same goes for Tanks.

When you begin adding vehicles like this you start to feel in-significant as an individual. Then it become a game about jets and tank battles versus infantry men out playing the enemies.

You then require every one to carry some sort of AA or RPG to take out vehicles. I am sure some MODs will cater to my feelings of tanks etc. I just hope it doesnt get out of hand.

You should be permanently banned from Arma 3, Steam, BI forums, every other forum, the internet and you should be burnt. :D

I know I know.

I just feel as an infantry person, you feel less significant. Basically it adds a requirement for every class to have a 'tank-buster' weapon.

This is why we should be able to barricade city streets to force you to get out of your tank and have some good ol CQB.

I know.

And dont crucify me for this example but for example in BF3 you feel....almost useless when all you see is jets and tanks everywhere.

The cities arent big enough to force some tank driver to say, "Man this road is blocked and since this city if so big it would take me 15 minutes to find another route, Ill get out and enjoy some CQB.

Not to mention with destructible environments, good bye to that second story building you are hiding in.

BF3 is a good example of that. You're going to die by tanks more than you will other infantry usually and it can get annoying. Tanks are rarely fired for the hell of it to clear out someone 15 feet in front of you at point blank

I was recently informed the current MAP is only 15% of the actual release map. If this is true, then jets and tanks are probably ok. Heck it takes 10 minutes now driving from Far North to far south of the map. Maybe we will NEED jets afterall

When they crash have them do this:

rather than:

(bf3 clip) (1:46)

Usually what happens is the nose hits something and the jet completely stops, and then *poof*

In most games the jet completely explodes when just the nose taps an object, or sometimes itll just leave a big grey burned shell of a jet to tumble around. Where in the top video you can clearly see that the plane pretty much disintegrates and looks like its clipping right through the ground. BF3 and other games don't make it feel like the plane is actually crumpling up as it crashes.

Im not saying to crumple the plane, just don't make it come to a dead stop and then puff into a ball of fire. The best way to do this would be to spawn a bunch of debris objects within the explosion, and deleting the actual vehicle after letting it pass under the terrain (to simulate the "crumpling")

http://i.imgur.com/Vx9wg3U.jpg

The end result of the picture above is a jet appearing to completely collapse into itself when it crashes, just like in the first video.

here is an arma 2 crash:

That crash looks REALLY cool until it hits the ground. Suddenly the plane seems like a sturdy tin can rather than a fragile piece of technology, know what I mean?

Also note that the plane switches models as soon as the wing taps the ground. But if it passed through the ground it would look like that plane is smashing into the ground right in front of the player

This is what happens in BF3 and A2:

and also the crash sites:

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2008-02/23/xinsrc_472020523104667114964.jpg

Of course this is only if the jet is headed straight at the ground, crash landings/skidding the current system works great from what ive seen with the helicopters. So no change needed there.

I plan on flying jets alot ingame, and nothing would be cooler than to have the jet crash realistically when I eject (if we can eject) and it would be cool for other players to witness the crash. And in other game modes (wasteland) you could even scavenge the crash.

And please make sure the explosion cloud is big enough :) its almost always too small and looks cheap in games

edit: found a perfect example of the bad bf3 crash:

see the delay?

very well done! this would be cool and it seems rather simple to implement, maybe after release, we are at 2/3 months i don't beleave we could see such things but..

Just noticed this thread:

http://forums.bistudio.com/showthread.php?160817-Vehicles-don-t-explode-STOP-THIS

Some of his complaints overlap into this thread but his seems to be more detail oriented as far as bullet holes etc go. But most of all the ugly black bodies of models after they explode

what I don't understand is why do objects need to become lower poly when they blow up? Why not keep the same poly density to allow more detail in the leftovers?

This thread made me register because honestly, it's a really cool suggestion.

Plane crashes in games have always looked odd to me, but I never really thought about why that might be. It is indeed very silly to have planes just turn into a big piece of metal that rolls around after crashing. I really hope a developer sees this, I don't think it would be a terribly hard thing to change/implement and it would make the game so much better. Please look into it!

Can you please make a feedback tracker ticket for this new jet collision request? It has a much better chance of being implemented if you make a ticket about it: http://feedback.arma3.com/plugin.php?page=Vote/list_bugs

Also will we be able to eject from the seat (with the seat actually), and then the parachute deploys from the seat?

That would be really cool.

And when a rocket hits the wings they fall off and the plane starts spinning wildly.
