RuecanOnRails 10 Posted May 28, 2013 Hey guys, I stumbled onto a new cloud service similar to dropbox but offers much larger with a free account. It includes a really clean looking desktop and mobile app with full support. If you sign up under my referral link we both get an extra 5GB. (new account 20GB) (yes, that is my incentive for posting, I'm not trying to hide that) https://copy.com?r=VqPQGz If you want to sign up but don't want to help me or yourself you can do that too. (new account non referral 15GB) https://copy.com I provide both links to give you the choice as I don't want to shove referral links down everyone's throat. :) When it comes to making backups of your personal data, remember 3 things. Redundancy, Security, and Encryption. ~Just figured I'd share this with anyone who missed getting in on other cloud launch promotions.

.Taffy 10 Posted May 29, 2013 I went through the process and after clicking 'Save Changes' on the Account page (didn't actually change anything it was just automatically opened after the install) I got the extra 5Gb. Thanks for sharing RuecanOnRails! :)
chortles 263 Posted May 29, 2013 Did you already install the Copy program/app and log in from said program and/or app with your created account?

Dwarden 1125 Posted May 29, 2013 not gunna happen ... I see zero reason to install random software from random companies on internet ...
chortles 263 Posted May 29, 2013 Yes, that seems to be the step needed in order for Copy to recognize the installation and grant the added 5 GB, although the mobile apps (iOS app and Android app) count too.
Sealife 22 Posted May 29, 2013 Had it a while for non personal stuff on iOS and windows PC Good A few things that stand out is that Copy is offering support for Windows, Mac, and Linux computers right out of the gate - and I commend them for that. Also, both Android and iOS apps are available Bad It appears that Copy does not encrypt all your data Use truecrypt if you do want to tho
RuecanOnRails 10 Posted May 29, 2013 In order to get the extra 5gb added from the referral you need to do 2 things. 1. Install the app onto your computer. 2. verify the email. If you log into the copy account on their website, click your name and go down to see referrals/bonus status. It should show a pending 5GB with whats missing such as "Waiting for email verification" or "Waiting for install" They also have a option where if you retweet a link you get an additional 2gb Thank you everyone who signed up under my link, I appreciate it very much :) If you don't want to install it, that is fine. You can still use their web app to upload and download files to. The web app is limited to a max of 1gb upload size.
Placebo 29 Posted May 30, 2013 Yeah just put connected the app on my Android phone and now it's all linked and got the 5gb extra! :) ---------- Post added at 11:21 ---------- Previous post was at 11:21 ---------- not gunna happen ... I see zero reason to install random software from random companies on internet ... Don't be such a drama queen!
Dwarden 1125 Posted May 30, 2013 ye well I have no idea what's this for company (yet) no details no info no sources ... so why I should rush and install theirs application on my system ? common sense is basic prevention layer against malware and rogueware ... when I know more I can decide if I trust the company / service
PuFu 4600 Posted May 30, 2013 where is the difference between this, dropbox and google drive?
Mr. Charles 22 Posted May 30, 2013 where is the difference between this, dropbox and google drive? Mainly the drive space I'd guess. Google Drive offers free 5 GB, Dropbox has free 2 GB, and this one has free 15 GB.
RuecanOnRails 10 Posted May 30, 2013 where is the difference between this, dropbox and google drive? Nothing really. Just another option. It does have an undelete option which will restore a previously changed or deleted file which could be handy. If you aim it at your current dropbox or google drive folder, it will create double cloud redundancy. The only thing that really separates this one from the others is that for a limited time they have a promotion to build up their user base. They are offering new users 15GB, +5GB if signed up using a referral link for both the new user and the referral. You can get an extra 2GB by retweeting through the webapp. It's a good way to get and build up a decent amount of cloud storage at no cost before the promotion ends. This is comparable to dropbox which offers only 2GB, and 500mb per referral. Right now I have it set to backup my entire phone and a few files locally on my computer. PuFu 4600 Posted May 30, 2013 i'm sorry, my question was directed to dwarden/david and is a teply towards his unthrust towards copy company. i am well aware of the services provided, i am using all of the above mentioned
Alpha-Kilo 36 Posted May 30, 2013 Quoted from the Terms of Service: "We may also need to share your data, information, files and folders with third parties who assist us in providing the service. You hereby consent to such sharing." This sentence is very clear. It difficult for me to use Copy but now I understand why they chose this name.
Dwarden 1125 Posted May 30, 2013 (edited) i'm sorry, my question was directed to dwarden/david and is a teply towards his unthrust towards copy company. i am well aware of the services provided, i am using all of the above mentioned i don't use application from either one :) as I don't need that .. there are actually documented or/and open-source cloud APIs which I could call more trust worthy and reliable... of course if one goes by name or experiences then he might trust Google then the Dropbox... the problem lays in the applications You install ... what they do, how, when, where ... :) now if the system support just remotely attached drive via OS function or open/documented API function then I don't need to care (if it's accompanied with encrypted transfer / data storage) there are reasons why many of these 'solutions' are banned in quite some of companies because they can open the can of worms later ... so ideal case, I just attach remote backup drive via my OS function, it automatically encrypt the data and encrypted upload to 5 cloud storages no need to bother with 'insert another random app' on my OS Edited May 30, 2013 by Dwarden
