Exeede rec specs but extreamly poor performance on arma 3 alpha

Recommended Posts

I'm sure a lot of people have dropped posts for this, but this is really frustrating.

MY computer.

AMD athlon 8120 3.1 ghz with a 15mb cache (8 cores)

8 gigs corsair ddr3 ram at 1600

Nvidia gtx 560 firmi with 2gigs ddr5 256bit ram

700 watt power box.

sata III 7200 rpm hd with a 64mb cache

ASUS m5a99xevo (new upgraded version as of october 2012)

upgraded gpu drivers as of yesterday

Now all in all I'm pretty sure that meets the recommended requirements, yet i get from 15 to 30 fps average.

The 25 to 30 parts i don't mind, this game seems quite smooth at those rates (much like crysis did), but the 15 to 20 rates, ie what i usualy am getting is allmost unplayable.

I real am at a loss, even when i drop all my settings to low (which is pretty much where i am at) there is only a 5 to 7 fps difference than on high. Now at such low frame rates, that 5 to 7 is everything so thus i set them down as much as i can stand (my view distance is at 700, objects the same, shadows at 80, aa is off and anstropic is at 2, hdr and post processing are at lowest and dynamic lights are on low.... and of course, vsync is off.

Something is wrong, im not sure what but it is.

The odd thing is i got the same bad performance on ARMA II, only about 20 to 30 fps as my average rather than 15 to 20 (though on arma 2 that was a lot worse of a drop given that the game had so much mouselag)

Ive tried setting my render rate and my resolution down and that does nothing, ive also tried overclocking my cpu to about 3.8 ghz and nothing.

Could it be that the 8120 Athlon cpu just has massive issues with the game.

The odd thing is my auto fan dosn't seem to be kicking in.

This was the same way with arma 2, i looked and found very little of my gpu was being used at all.

What the hell is wrong with my machine, and why is it only ARMA games that seem to be affected?

PS ive tried the -CpuCount=8 command and that didnt realy help as far as i could tell.

I have a very similar setup to your computer. Sometimes the game runs nice, but it will drop FPS for no apparent reason. It seems to get worse the longer I'm playing, which is unfortunate. Maybe there is a memory leak?

Great game even in Alpha. Yes, I'm aware its Alpha so all I'm trying to to is provide some feedback saying the game seems to randomly drop FPS at any video settings.

Watch this.

Also, what about Overclocking your machine? I have a GTX 470 / Phenom ii (4 core) 965 / 8 RAM and I'm overclocked. I get around 20-30 fps with 4500 view distance and everything on ultra (Vsync on and 1080p). When I drop the view distance down to 1500, I get 30-40 fps. Something is defiantly not tweaked right with your machine.

Might get more help if you get this post moved over to the trouble shooting thread. Not sure if you have tried but disable vsync and turn PP off, some have said this has helped them. Also look for a post in the feedback tracker and add your info there. No need to start a new post but look for one about this topic and add you info. Less tickets and more info should help the devs fix things. Having one post with 50 inputs is better then 50 post with one input.

Just saying

@wse_jack

What is the situation exactly? I mean you get this awfully bad performance when you place yourself on an empty island in editor? Or you get this in showcases or user made missions? If its an empty island or the official showcases then something is definitely wrong. Otherwise you should consider not to download missions from this particular missionmaker =).

and no vsync is off, infact, thats in my original post that vsync is off, and pp is down...

At least you didnt rage post... this is what's alpha for. There are numerous setups in PC gaming, so It's kinda hard for developer to predict what kind the end user system will be. So anyway, have you put a ticket at the feedback tracker? There are numerous ticket about lagging there, maybe you can vote up the ticket there with all the infos. I'm sure the dev use them most of the time.

Other than that, try to reduce your VD and object VD to maybe 1600 and work it up bit by bit until you find your sweet spot.

Oh btw, the recomended spec doesnt say what resolution is the best for those with recommended spec. I think they should include it, since that also influence performance. You cant expect a cheap card to run well at 1920xsomething resolution (This is the reason I hate LCDs with native resolution. Wish I still had a CRT)

I'm sorry I cant help you more than that,

Moving to TS where these kinds of threads belong.

Please do not simply copy and paste your dixdiag, it's a lazy way to provide your system specs, either spoiler as I did above or just host the txt file on some fileshare please :)

There is nothing wrong with your system.

We all get terrible framerates.

It also probably won't get much better for release. Nothing more significant than a few % increase overall I'd say. The engine is just too old it's like squeezing water from rocks.

No, we don't. The engine yet has to be tested on several possible hardware combinations and optimized/bugfixed accordingly. Nothing uncommon. So actually on some it runs fine and on some it doesn't.

The engine is just too old it's like squeezing water from rocks.

Same can be said from some other actually used and praised game engines. No valid point.

ive only seen it running "fine" (without terrible minimum fps) on i7´s with more than 4,5ghz (overclocked), and even so not having high cpu usage even on low settings and not on every scenario, because in some it does get bad fps. (having the average usage always around the equivalent of 2 cores like everyone else)

unless getting as low/or lower than 20fps with explosions, or lots of AI, vehicles or basicly anything going on is "fine" for you. it isnt for me and for a whole lot of people.

which to me makes that statement biased, not to say a lie. well but not anyone knows the difference of playing something with 20fps or 120fps. acctually a lot of people still believe the human eye only perceives 30fps which i find to be sad.

but you can always prove me wrong by showing a cpu intensive gameplay with 30-40 minimum fps and telling what are the specifics of this so called magic combination of hardware. the main bug report has all kinds of hardware with the same issue.

im sorry but im skeptic, heard too many people saying they had great fps only to back down on their statement afterwards when they had to prove it.

Try viewdistance very low (1000m), 700m objects or something. PiP off, model and terrain detail standard or lower.

vsync off of course.

then go to documents, there should be a folder there called arma 3 alpha with a file called Arma3Alpha.cfg, open that file with notepad and make sure

GPU_MaxFramesAhead=0;

GPU_DetectedFramesAhead=0;

that should get you the best response even at low fps, wont increase fps but makes it more playable at low framerates.

Running the Showcase Missions on a AMD Phenom II X4 965 @3.4GHz with FPS between 30-40 without any drops. Not perfect but quite far from being unplayable.

which to me makes that statement biased, not to say a lie.

Careful. Although i might admit that i'm a little biased, when MSI Afterburner tells me i have FPS between 30 and 40, this is a simple fact.

well but not anyone knows the difference of playing something with 20fps or 120fps.

Well, i do know that for TV/Movie theatres 24/25 FPS is enough, i also do know that for computer games it isn't. But i know aswell that for a slow paced game like ArmA 3, having 120 FPS isn't that important like for a faster paced game like <insert name of popular first person shooter>.

As the PC savvy guy you are, you surely know how many possible hardware and software combinations are possible (Motherboard, CPU, Ram, Graphic card, Soundcard, Peripherals, OS versions, driver versions) and that it is next to impossible to test it on each combination. That's what an public alpha is for. There is a huge amount of players now testing and reporting, covering almost endless combinations of hard-and software. So, while many people do actually have problems with performance, BI gets back many reports and can now actively work on resolving those issues. Sure as hell this takes time and as the final release is scheduled for Q3 they surely have the time to.

8cores? 560 vidcard? Well there ya go. fix them and you will get better FPS.

i have 4cores, 7970 3GB, and i can get my Vysnc. But with the max settings, 2K VD=OD ,PP@VL, Multiplayer 22+ at Airbase looking toward the Marina, varying FPS 30-40 running around, 75+ in some other areas... Same as A2 in allot of ways. 1500p

Myke;2338928'] So actually on some it runs fine

This is probably due to different users definition of "fine"

My brother played games on an ancient e-machines for so long that he thinks above 15 fps is great.

sure i also get those, my x6 is the same as yours cpu, just 2 more cores that are unused in this game. its easy to get even a little more than that on the infantry showcase before entering the small town, and before the explosions. that mission for the most part is very light on the cpu side. but it does drop framerates inside the village with both the explosions and gunfire.

so no videos on the scenarios i mentioned then.

24/25 is the minimum for humans to perceive pictures as motion, there are better cinemas with 60fps (without 3d). i agree that 120 although its todays standard for competitive fps´s with 120hz monitors might be too much to ask, but 30fps is also too low, to people that spend the most part of their lives playing fps since wolfeinstein 3d, we can easily perceive the lack of frames and only beginning at around 60fps we start to perceive it as being smooth. the blur trend in games exists because blurring lowfps gives it a bigger sense of smoothness, but a false one.

to prove my point about fps i ask you to download/watch this movie comparing 24fps against 60fps. it has to be downloaded because youtube limits videos with 30fps. http://www.solidfiles.com/d/a369a/

being side-by-sided noone can argue about not seeing the huge difference there is.

source: http://mckack.tumblr.com/post/3535190601/60fps-vs-24fps

even so, i would consider a 30fps Minimum at ALL TIMES, acceptable. noone can aim properly and compensate recoil with effectiveness with 20fps in any game, even in the low paced arma.

i thought APIs like directx/opengl took care of most if not all hardware compatibility and that had nothing to do with how you code the engine. unless you dont use directx or opengl imho.

using latest hardware/software/drivers in mind should be easy enough to code to though, legacy hardware is what usually the problem lies. but thats not the case when almost every single person playing shows the same simptoms. even people wiyth intel 3960X or nvidia titan.

but although you guys are pretty vague and misterious about how you are dealing with this, at least you seem to be pointing towards solving it, using or not multithread properly even though i know you keep saying that has nothing to do with it and ill keep not believing it. but being vague and not placing the most complained issue on the known issues/sit rep is not very reassuring.

anyway since the game is not a preorder and noone can get their money back from steam eitherway, we can only hope.

and dont take me wrong, in any other aspect i love arma, but the performance issue to me is a dealbreaker and ive always been very frustrated on arma 2 with it.

my specs outta curiosity:

amd x6 thuban @3,3ghz (real x6) on an antec 620 watercooler (next month ill probably "upgrade" to the vishera 8350, but since its a "x8" i expect to lose performance on arma with it, but gain on everything else thats cpu bound)

gigabyte 990xa-ud3

16gb ddr3 1600mhz

ssd agility 4 256gb

ocz fatality 550w 80plus

gigabyte 660ti oc windforce

PS.: i have to say, devs not recognizing how crappy 30fps is, is kind of disappointing.

White's feedback is quite helpful as he provides informations about his system and details about his performance. You were just complaining about a old yet further developed engine and that devs probably wont care at all. See the difference. Also earned a infraction for publicly discussing on how this Forum is moderated.

as answer to white:

all cpus with slow frontend an cache suffer in arma 3. i would recommend you to buy an AMD FX 8350, or I5 3570 from intel.

sounds lame i know but sooner or later you will see the fact.

anandtech did quite nice benchmarks with should be made a sticky thread with maybe? they show quite nice where which cpu is expected to be performance wise.

on uq(ultra quality) you see the gab between amd and intel and phenom and Piledriver/fx

thanks, i guess apparently i was wrong, the vishera performance surprised me there, to me thats good news (i expected those "halfcores" to perform worse in this particular game). and intel dual cores are there right next to them showing the lack of multicore in the engine.

unrelated:

imho this is what scaling with multicore support should look like: (duals then quads then 6 then 8)

well only works if you have many simulations like in crysis 3, that are completetly indipendant from each other, so you can easely utilize 8 cores at its best.

but in arma 3 the simulations depent on each other so 1 thread do all the syncing and rest gets just from time to time things to do, and so best bang for the buck is actually i3 dualcore from intel in arma 3.
