Boycotting Origin .... bought Take on Helicopters

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

just wanted to voice my opinion about the business model of EA and their newest "addition" to the line: Origin.

I saved some money for BF 3, as I enjoyed previous Battlefield titles very much, but this renewed attack on the privacy of the non pirating user is too much for my taste.

Why the new thread, you may ask?

Simple: While I am not into civilian sims too much (I like to blow sh$$ up), I very much support the BIS model of long lasting support and minimal intrusion into the system of the user via DRM.

Therefore I decided to vote with my wallet and support BIS business model instead of EA's and hope other ppl feel the same.

Just my 0,02€

Most probably yes, but I intended this thread as a call to vote with your wallet, not as a possible promotion for ARMA3.

But obviously its up to the mods to decide.

I was thinking that if we get enough people to phone EA support at once, we may well cause havoc! :D

Probably,

but I believe in the power of economy, or as a wise man once said "the wallet is mightier than the phone" ;)

EA has too many sheeple following them for us to make a difference. Though I have to admit I do intend to buy BF3.

I also doubt that origin will get very far, Steam has too much of a head start, and, more importantly, it doesn't just sell Valve games unlike Origin which is just EA stuff.

And there we have the problem. You know what Origin is and you still decide to use it

What does it really matter what form EA are using to allow a game to run, copy protection or to stop cheat factor?

It's what they believe is the best course of action, business wise, marketing. Origin is a media that once fully implemented allows them to add DLC, advertisements for other game tittles and so forth. Look how Stream was once hated by many and is now widely accepted.

I too can't stand the numerous hoops the player must now jump through to buy some games, play that game, especially when for the better part all of those extra features now required can cause all sorts of issues.....

I thrashed BF1942, plus expansions and BF2, little clowns ruined those games. I know the pain EA can cause the player! Yet with over 182 000 PC players online as I type this I doubt EA sweet the small stuff, in they're eyes....

Its like cigarettes. People know itll kill them, but they still decide to use it. I havent bought a console game in awhile anyway so this might be it so I can avoid this Origin crap.

online boycotting doesn't work' date=' period.[/quote']

True, but buying other developers products instead does.

Many many ppl will buy BF3 no doubt (alone the console sells will be huge) so just not buying their title will only be a small drop.

(although the german law enforcement investigating, bc it seems that the EULA contains infringements upon german law, might not be such a small drop after all) ;)

But taking your money somewhere else makes a difference, as you turn the product of another developer into an economic success, which in turn allows said developer to continue a marketing strategy which you approve.

I very much want to play BF3, but Origin is a ridiculous service. I downloaded Origin and then unistalled it straight away.

I hate some of the crap EA comes up with. If they put the game on steam they would have my money.

Companies go nuts when people pirate their products, but what reason do we have to buy them legally? It's expensive, much more hassle, and completely invades our pricavy.

(That applies to Origin in particular, of course this issue does not exist with Arma 2 and 99% of Steam releases I have bought)

i for one bought both TKOH(supporting BIS and seeing the new engine features) and BF3 (for a quick gaming fix every now and then).

Origin is a bitch yes, i guess we all agree on it. I have it running with sandboxie. (although i am pretty sure their EA EULA will change rather sooner than later).

i really don't see the point of this thread though...

Hey Pufu,

I have sandboxie, what would running Origin in a sanbox do? Will it just stop Origin from connecting to the outside world or?

Cheers!

would not allow origin to search you computer. You need to allow it to connect to the internet, or it will not allow you to play. ;)

i should be trying the second link, since the first link approach means each time you install something on your computer, you will need to add to sndbx list

Well, i also just bought TakOH instead of BF3, though i may eventually just buy BF3 anyway if i really feel the need for some easy shooting.

BF3 will surely be released on steam too. I think its better to get it with steam than with origin
