British Heavy Metal: Ridgeback PPV

Recommended Posts

As I never got to play with Jtec's Mastiff® I thought I'd have a go at it's smaller sibling the Ridgeback.

The Ridgeback is a British modification (ie. bodge up) of the American Cougar.

This is my first attempt at a wheeled vehicle so in the words of the song ...

"There may be trouble ahead"....

If anyone thinks it looks more like a Humber Pig then it's all going horribly wrong.:j:

Thanks for the replies... tho' I'm not sure what Hellfire is trying to tell me!

As far as release goes, well it's stuck on my HDD at the moment as we haven't got enough transport aircraft to airlift it to theatre....

Anyway, here's my initial attempt at the addon armour:

bar1.jpg

bar2.jpg

Possibly too 'bar' and not enough 'slat'?

I've reduced the number of horizontal bars (artistic licence) - 'cause it don't half increase the poly count - which always makes me itchy and scratchy.

btw, possibly stupid question: how do you close the rear door bar armour when you get in?

The bar armour is attached to the doors by a bracket. There's a rather complex treble-hinge system built into the sections of the cage on either side of the door that allows it do deform and flex as the doors open [Nevermind, that's the Mastiff]. The bracket acts as a floating hinge on the Ridgback.

Good work on the model by the way. The windows could probably do with being made slightly thicker (i.e. they shouldn't sit so flush to the door), but otherwise it looks the biz. Also, there's no 'e' in Ridgback

@da12thMonkey: thanks for the comments and references.

The dynamic duo come to my rescue again!

Trouble is, every picture I see of a particular British vehicle looks different to every other picture I see of the same vehicle.

On the plus side I suppose it means I can do what I want and no-one can say catagorically that it's wrong...

btw I think your wrong about the 'e'!

It's "Ridgback" going by the MOD site IIRC.

If I see any usable reference pictures as I crawl the web I'll send em your way.

btw I think your wrong about the 'e'!

The guys at Force Protection Europe spell it without the 'e':

http://www.forceprotectioneurope.co.uk/products/ridgback/

As does most of the stuff from the MoD, that I receive through work. There are plenty of public news articles from the MoD that spell it without the E as well:

http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/DefenceNews/PeopleInDefence/BritishTroopsHaulRidgbackInHelmandMarathon.htm

http://www.blogs.mod.uk/afghanistan/2008/06/the-ridgback-ve.html

I always found it a bit weird that was spelled that way, given that the breed of dog it's named after seems to be spelled 'Ridgeback' in most cases. Actually, the reason I've remembered it, is on account of how many times I though to myself "Why do they misspell Ridgeback time after time?", before I accepted Ridgback as the approved spelling of the vehicle's name.

Regarding the differences in some vehicles; it's down to the nature of operations - kit has to evolve constantly, and there are specialist variants of certain vehicles. For example, there are something like 6 variants of Mastiff for different roles (PPV, BFA, IECM, ECV, Protected Eyes, IEOD) across 3 different production generations - I honestly don't know how many different combinations of these different generations and variants have been made. IIRC there are at least 4 variants of Ridgback - PPV, Weapons Platform, BFA and a Command versions.

It's a right bloody headache trying to make British addons when you face tasks like that, isn't it? :(

When Darkhorse knows more about my model than I do it's time to admit defeat in the missing 'e' department.:D

I can picture what happened.... someone high up in the organisation decided his girlfriend should design the company brochure (she'd been to art school).

Art students can't spell so she made a typo... everyone is too embarassed to mention it and so they make it a trademark.

Brilliant! When it's a LOGO you can mis-spell it, put capital letters in the middle of it (PhotoShop) and all is well.

Anyway, I'm off to study floating hinges...

But... I can spell... .____.

*Cough*

You know, I think you're slowly turning me into a UK kit fanboy, which is weird, because most everything I've seen fielded by the MoD in the last few years has been pretty horrendously ugl- er- ah...

ANYWHO! Very nice vehicle, and a much-needed addition to the standard BAF content. However, being the firepower-happy Yank that I am, I suppose I'll have to ask the obvious- You plannin' on any armed variants?

@ DA

Having you and Darkhorse join in is pretty cool considering I thought this stuff might only be of interest to the Brits. Much appreciated!

Yes, I have allways intended to add the remote weapon station at least - which i think makes it a Weapons Platform not a PPV- (da12th)?

btw If you're a 'Yank' is Darkhorse a 'Reb' or have I got it all 'arse upwards'?

forgive a Brits ignorance!

Well, I can't speak for Darkhorse, but for me, it's partially my innate familiarity with American kit that drives me to learn about other nations' equipment. Yeah, we've got some nifty, unique concepts of our own, but I can only see so many Abrams and Bradleys before I yearn for something fresh and interesting. There's a whole world out there, and I love to see how each nation approaches the facets of modern warfare. It actually can tell you a lot about a nation, how they prioritize their military research and development, you know?

Mind you, that's the TL;DR way of saying I like having as many toys in my box as possible. XD

Ah, nifty! An armored, boxy truck with a lead-spitter mounted on top of it! If I wasn't currently driving a small, efficient Japanese sedan, I'd buy one in a heartbeat!

(Trust me, if you saw how people drive down here, you'd want one, too...)

You know, I'm... not actually sure! I'm from California, originally, so I don't even think my state existed back when those distinctions were made. Most people just call me "You Son Of A Bi-" er...

Let's just say there's a very... colorful local dialect here in the Southwest.

They probably couldnt trademark the RidgEback so they had to settle for one less vowel ;)

@ Cleggy that does look cool! Really looking forward to more British kit.

We call your kind hippies. I think. I lived in the SD area for a while, including one place 3 streets up from the beach, and I've gotta tell you. Your Mexican problem ain't getting any better. (Although it isn't quite up to the El Paso level yet.) :D (Also, SoCal has nicer drivers for the most part, compared to the rest of the nation. *excluding the southeast*. Saw a lot less road rage out there)

@Cleggy - I'm a military nut. I've spent hours at a time compiling information on misc./random equipment, sort of creating my own database. I've slacked off a bit recently, and lost a bit of my external that I need to redo, but I know stuff about everything from the BAF, to the CHP, to the Albanian Coast Guard.

:p

Top work. The more Brit kit the better IMHO.

Lets hope you move on to make Mastiff 3 PPV (Protected Patrol Vehicle) and Wolfhound (Heavy Tactical Support Vehicle).

I live in Arizona, now, so... yeah, the immigration thing is definitely a hot-button topic, given how our Governor and Sheriff won't shaddap about it.

'Course, I grew up in Los Angeles, so... I might have to disagree about that whole "nicer drivers" thing. A trip along the 405 is usually enough to make a religious man outta you... that, or a corpse. XD

But, er, I'll not derail the thread with how scary the drivers can be in the 'States. I don't think it'd be terribly relevant, unless Cleggy intends to add a script that makes the driver of the vehicle speed down the road at 80 miles an hour, talking on his cell phone while cutting other vehicles off without signaling.

(Hilarious, yes, but I... don't think it's part of military protocol to do that. .__.)

Cleggy qwhat are you using as the base for the config? I've tried using a LR for the base for a mastiff and also a snatch but am having no luck what so ever.

@DA/DH: I'm surprised there's so much bad driving in the States. You've got plenty of land... I would have thought there's room for everyone!

@RKSL: Hi Rock. I nearly gave up on this stuff when I saw you were doing vehicles as well as aircraft:) ... hope they're coming along nicely. (If your doing a 'Rdgbk' tell me now!)

@Tankieboy: I would be the first to admit I'm not the fastest modeller in the world - so don't hold yer breath! I've hit a bit of a wall with the 'Rdgbk' - the more I look at it the less I like what I'm seeing:( - anyone else get times like that?

@rhaggan: I have tried various vehicle classes for this and now have a sort of mish-mash ... base is Wheeled APC with a bit of Stryker.

In game it performs like the greatest off-road vehicle ever - which I'm not sure is entirely appropriate.:D

Haha, I'm only doing a few vehicles for to fit my own needs and IAP's demands.

I was going to send you a message about a "colluding" with a new British Faction expansion. I've just not had time to sort myself out.

But you are safe I've no intentions toward Ridgback or Mastiff. If you want I can PM you a list of probable projects so we don't clash. But to be honest from what I've seen so far I'm happy to use your stuff. If there is anything I can do to help you give me a shout.

Rock
