Innomadic 10 Posted May 23, 2011 Posted a dev-heaven ticket a while back, however with the announcement of Arma 3, i think the issue must be raised again. The issue is the units of measurement in relation to aircraft, which in the real world speed is measured by Knots and height in feet whereas in Arma 2 it is km/h and meters. However i do happen to know that many Arma players also play DCS, FSX or other flight sims in which knots and feet are the dominant unit of measurement, so we are already programmed to play with this unit. Allowing to change the unit of measurement simply as a menu option would greater increase immersion for a fair number of Arma players whose predominant area of gameplay in Arma is of course aviation. It would also decrease the amount of times i've stalled and crashed on approach in an A-10... PLEASE NOTE: I am not asking for complete conversion, i am simply asking for the option. Trauma.au 10 Posted May 23, 2011 I would like this option also, for aircraft only.
rye1 21 Posted May 23, 2011 Yes this indeed would be awesome! Sorry but I also think it would be good for weight as there is no universal measurement and some countries are different I'm sure they'd appreciate it. It could be changed through options so easily. +
Tonmeister 14 Posted May 23, 2011 possibly even naval units if we see them introduced
Freeborne 10 Posted May 23, 2011 I'd rather see it as a "Player Profile" option, similar to setting your Language. Less 'menu options' we have the better.
Beagle 684 Posted May 23, 2011 The dominant measure in DCS is meters and Km/h, by the way...the dominat in numbers aircraft flown in DCS and FC2.0 are russian ones.
PuFu 4600 Posted May 23, 2011 you all see it from the NATO perspective. remember that some countries don't use the imperial system, but the metric one. having it an option would be great, but configs value should stay the same-metric
Innomadic 10 Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) The dominant measure in DCS is meters and Km/h, by the way...the dominat in numbers aircraft flown in DCS and FC2.0 are russian ones. Strange friends who have DCS Warthog say the Ruskies and the French only use kmh/meters whereas the Hog use kts/ft. Everything in FSX uses kts/ft and i have it on relatively good authority that kts/ft are the worldwide standardized units of measurement for civil aviation. NOTE: I should point out that when i mentioned DCS i was indeed referring to DCS A-10 Warthog. My mistake if you based your reply on Black Shark. I'd rather see it as a "Player Profile" option, similar to setting your Language.Less 'menu options' we have the better. So long as its an option somewhere i don't care, i just want kts/ft. sabre4809 0 Posted May 23, 2011 (edited) relatively good authority that kts/ft are the worldwide standardized units of measurement for civil aviation. Might wanna check that as the international civil aviation standard is SI for all units of measurement with kts/ft as a temporary accepted exception if desired. Anyway, an option would be cool for the flight nuts, however antiquated it is. Edited May 23, 2011 by SAbre4809
EricM 0 Posted May 23, 2011 Actually you have both in real life depending on the country you're from : - In Russia, they use metric system for everything - In the west they use knots and feet mainly because of the influence of the US planemakers (Boeing, Cessna etc...) even in countries where the metric system is the norm (eg France). - I'm not sure what they use in China or India... I'm no expert, but my brother being a pilot in France uses both, switching back and forth between nautical miles (1852m) because it's well suited for navigation (it corresponds to one minute of arc at the equator), feet and meters o km/h depending on what written on the map or gauges. Nautical miles are actually different from terrestrial miles used in the Imperial system (1609m)... which aren't used for aerial or sea navigation compared to the meter of nautical mile IIRC. BIS having on measurement system for everything (West, East, Ground, Sea etc...) i think it's fair to use the international standard (as in metric) for everything. Ok, i'll take a look, but friends of mine who work in the industry say they use kts/ft predominately if not exclusively. Hopefully i'll find out for myself next year or thereabouts Still, i'd like it as an option.
[aps]gnat 28 Posted May 23, 2011 Guys, really, come on, the old imperial system is only being pushed by one country. Time that country caught up.
Innomadic 10 Posted May 23, 2011 All i know is in every flight sim, in every reference to aviation i know off (which is alot) they use Kts/Ft and i'd like to have that option in Arma 3.
