Morten87 10 Posted April 18, 2011 Ok, my question is as following, what do you recommend? Bying ARMA 2 & OA on STEAM or bye it on Disc. I already got the regulare ARMA 2 on disc, but I was thinking of bying OA, and then got to think about own it on steam, because it simly would be easyer thinking on updates ect. But what do you recommend? and why? Also is it possably to install my ARMA 2 disc game on STEAM? and not on the computer? Or do I have to bye a steam version? (sorry about my bad english:P)
grub 10 Posted April 18, 2011 This is just my personal opinion based on me owning DVD's and my buddy owning STEAM. I never have issues with patches addons mods anything, unless its my fault. The amount of F-ing around sometimes needed to get things happening on STEAM drives me up the wall. But it comes down to preference. I recommended to DVD's tho. Also if you need to un-install then re-install its a heap quicker that Dling everything again.
LondonLad 13 Posted April 18, 2011 I would normally recommend the STEAM route, but on this occasion with the ARMA2 series, I would strongly recommend the Disc version (for the least amount of headache). From the experience the ARMA2 customers have recieved from their 'STEAM' purchases (in terms of updates, and expansions; including DLCs) has left users frustrated, annoyed, disappointed and no doubt other feelings that I don't need to mention. As for using the CD-Key against the STEAM platform I don't believe that option is available for this particular game, so I don't believe you can.
f00 10 Posted April 18, 2011 I'd recommend Direct2Drive or similar website where you can buy the game on line and download an installable compressed version. http://www.direct2drive.co.uk/default.aspx
cri74 10 Posted April 18, 2011 I would recomend to buy DVD version or a Download version of the game :) Seems much easier to handle addons(there is so much content) and different files in A2 if its not on steam, though this can maybe be a personal view. http://www.sprocketidea.com/joomla/ <- to support the devs ! BeerHunter 0 Posted April 18, 2011 As was said earlier , either a downloaded version or the disk but definitely not Steam.
Baff1 0 Posted April 18, 2011 I find buying the discs from an online shop is always at least twice as cheap as STEAM. I bought a DLC for this game off of Gamersgate which I greatly prefered to both to Steam and Direct2Drive's services. I pretty much avoid STEAM wherever I can. That said, I'm pretty sure it is functional.
Gunter Severloh 4051 Posted April 18, 2011 DVD and or Sprocket, Steam is a clusterf*ck of screwed up folders, not very user friendly at least for Arma games.
MissionCreep 12 Posted April 18, 2011 DVD for me ... if you want to download, get Sprocket instead of Steam. Steam is 3rd party reseller, Sprocket is BIS own online store.
s0kka 19 Posted April 18, 2011 I bought mine from Steam but had I known better, I would have gone for other options. Its not unplayable, you can make mods work but it is not as convenient in keeping the game and the mods up to date. Personally I haven't had any trouble worth getting angry about but when you have the option to decide, Steams strenghts are elsewhere. Good luck!
pooroldspike 129 Posted April 20, 2011 You can't beat having solid disks in your hands rather than downloads. As I always say- disks are forever..:)
Lonestar 11 Posted April 20, 2011 Buy a retail copy, you won't regret it.

Big Dawg KS 6 Posted April 20, 2011 Despite what people here say, it really makes little difference. A lot of people here just have a really unjustified bias against Steam and will try to tell you that certain things don't work or are more difficult to do, but I assure you if you are familiar enough with Steam there is pretty much no difference between owning the Steam version or owning a DVD version. Patching and mods actually work just as well, especially since most of the recent patch releases (and all beta patches) work with both versions. If your a regular user of Steam and you prefer that option, then there's no reason not to go for the Steam version. It really only depends on your personal preference. I have bought all ArmA 2 products through Steam and have had no problems whatsoever. ---------- Post added at 09:19 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:13 AM ---------- I already got the regulare ARMA 2 on disc, but I was thinking of bying OA If you already have ArmA 2 on disc then you may be better of buying OA on disc too, but yes, in theory the Steam version is easier to install/update (I say in theory because the regular version isn't really difficult to install or update either).
