Conure 10 Posted March 16, 2011 Hey guys, I am enjoying the game but sometimes it feels very poorly made. I also play the DCS sims (A10 and Black Shark) so I understand the CPU needs of these types of games...The game can be running at 50fps but feel like it's running at 20...Is this normal? I dont know how to describe it, it feels...Sluggish? My pc specs are.. Core i5 @ 2.8 (but clocks itself up to like 3.2 when gaming) 4gb ddr3 ram @ 1200mhz GTX 460 SE 1gb On all normal graphics with post processing off, I am averaging probably 38fps...Though I have a large monitor and this is at 1900-1200.. Does this sound about right? Will I be at a big disadvantage online with this FPS? Thanks :)
NeMeSiS 11 Posted March 16, 2011 ...Sluggish? Turn off vsync and lower render frames ahead as far as possible. (0, if crashes occur then 1)
Conure 10 Posted March 16, 2011 Hey there thanks! V sync off..How do I change render frames? thanks
NeMeSiS 11 Posted March 16, 2011 Either in your driver settings, or in your ArmA2OA.cfg file. (Open it with notepad)
EDcase 87 Posted March 17, 2011 (edited) Also try... Reduce the "Aiming deadzone" in options. Reduce to zero the mouse "Smoothing" in options. (This game is much more CPU demanding that DCS) Edited March 17, 2011 by EDcase
Conure 10 Posted March 17, 2011 I will try those things guys. Thanks! Sometimes my game drops to like 28fps...Is that considered very low for this game? cheers
NeMeSiS 11 Posted March 17, 2011 No, that is quite normal. FPS is mostly mission dependant since this game is very heavy on the CPU and its mostly up to the mission maker how CPUheavy a mission is. Generally i prefer lower but stable FPS over a higer average FPS with low and high spikes since its easier on the eyes/brain if its stable, so if your FPS jumps up too high sometimes you may consider just increasing your GFX settings. I think my main worry was that at 28fps I certainly couldn't pull off Cod (or even battlefield) esque quick shooting. Though I have a feeling even the fibua in this game is probably quite slow paced? Also, is there much in the way of online squad action? I love DCS for the coordinated coop with other people. Is this game more of a "go online and own" game, or more about the developed communities? Cheers :)

Try to get in a certain group and play with them regulary, it beats pubbing. That said, i rarely/never play online nowadays. And yeah, you dont need a high FPS. Actually, the only reason people like certain (very high) FPS's in CoD is that there is a very old Q3 engine bug that allows you to jump a certain height according to your FPS, and you get the best results with 250 or 333 or something ridiculously high that you never need in any other game. In ArmA you can play with whatever FPS feels right to you.
msy 22 Posted March 17, 2011 This game need only 24+ FPS to play. If you want 60+ FPS, please go to COD\MOH\BF etc.

Why is this game any different? Is it slower and more tactical? Having a low FPS is never good. Not in Arma 2, not in COD, not in BF.

I would agree, the FPS isn't about the smoothness of the visuals but it is also a measure of the game's reaction times to control inputs etc. If you want 60 FPS, get a GTX580. ;)
Shadow NX 1 Posted March 17, 2011 most of the time im stuck at 25frames or bit below with a EAH6950 and the bottlenecking Phenom 1 X4 9850 in my system that prevents frames from getting over a certain limit with many AIs present but i can play pretty ok with that so nothign to bother that much. From what i gather a new fast CPU like the Sandy Bride models will boost your frame rates extremely as A2 is a real CPU eater.
Mr. Charles 22 Posted March 17, 2011 Sandy Bridge, not Sandy Bride xD. I would wait for the S-ATA bug to be fixed tho.

Can't run AI on it. You are talkin' about control inputs and I agree. 1. Low FPS makes me ill/sick/tired after a while. Can't take it. 2. Low FPS makes the controls extra sloppy. 3. Makes recording with Fraps/Playclaw extra hard. If you want smooth 30 FPS. This game gets away with so many things. According to the forums.

According to the forums. I should have mentioned a fast CPU and RAM helps too. About your "slow" Raptor, try Disktrix Ultimate Defrag. You can assign more commonly used programs to the outer part of your drive platter and increase loading speeds etc and it certainly keeps your drives in good nick. A decent tool if you like to squeeze every last bit of performance out of your machine.

Too bad I'm only getting out around 11GB for it. And my mb doesn't handle 32GB of RAM. An SSD is on it's way. At least faster than standard HDDs. And again about CPU. I won't upgrade that for a while. It's pretty fast. The problem lies in Arma 2. Finally, Battlefield 3 is on it's way. Would like to see some good mods. ACE/Proper stuff. Could be a real killer. There are some very good mods in Arma 2 but they can only take it so far.
avengerzx 10 Posted March 17, 2011 This game will guarantee you a smooth FPS if your CPU has a clock speed of 4000Mhz/4Ghz and must be a Quad Core Processor.

True, even the difference between my old QX9650 @ 4.2GHz and my i7 at stock speed, never mind it's current 4.2GHz, was quite noticeable. I think 4 true cores is the way to go with ARMA. froggyluv 2136 Posted March 17, 2011 Game runs pretty smooth for me on dual core @3.6 + 460gtx. Im not buying into the Quad thing is a necessity just yet.
killerwhale 1 Posted March 17, 2011 Get nvidia cards like GTX 570/580 if you want performance.
Pummel 10 Posted March 18, 2011 To those of you with high end CPU's, how well does the game perform for you? I have an HD5870 graphics card which is really good, but my PC only has an old dual core which isn't great. I was thinking of getting a sandy bridge but I'm not sure if I should try to budget for an HD 580 as well, or if my current card would be enough?
Lonestar 11 Posted March 18, 2011 CPU upgrade will help you get better performance. Stable overclocking will give you an extra FPS too.
