the stutter makes cutscene in PMC hard to watch

I have full PMC, the cutscene videos in it are too stuttered to watch.

My system is WIN7 32BIT, E6600@3G,HD4870 1G, 4G RAM, WD BLACK 1TB SATA3. And I have almost every kinds of video codec. Though the machine is not strong to today's, but I can watch 1080P movies smoothly.

But in the game, I can see seconds with 60fps at first, then it stutters alot and fps drops to 1.x at the same time both cores of CPU are loaded to 100%. I press Esc key to pause it and wait for half a minute, then play again. It will be fine for seconds then stutter like before.

I know I can skip it, but this story will not be complete.

I want help. I want know if there is a way to solve it now or there will be a patch to fix it.

Hi

try to defrag your ArmA mainfolder with a third party tool. Windows default defragger is not up to the task. When applying new patches and installing new downloads, files are getting fragmented. It might help to gain in performance and reduce the stuttering.

Its not a harddrive issue i think. Iam having the same problem while running the game and the operating system from the SSD.

What did let you think its a harddrive issue nettrucker?

Win7 64bit, E8200@3,7 Ghz, HD4850 512 MB, 4GB Ram, Intel X25 SSD

I'm having this issue too and have pretty similar system as Ginger McAle.

Win7 64bit, E4300@3Ghz, HD4850 512 MB, 4GB Ram, Intel X25-M 80GB SSD

Only special codecs installed are ffdshow (ffdshow_rev3507_20100707_clsid).

CPU usage seems to hit the roof when this happens:

A repost from my reply to RoinEx from the general PMC thread:

I completely understand your concern; indeed, we did not design the campaign to be played without videos. We're sorry that you are experiencing playback issues - it appears to be dependent upon a number of factors at the user end, with different users encountering vastly different quality of experiences. This is not acceptable as far as I'm concerned, but, you've got to love the PC. ;)

I know you'er an experienced user, so forgive me if I sound patronising by suggesting that the best advice at the moment is to de-fragment your HDD, to ensure data access is as efficient as possible for the playback. It's likely that dumping a DLC on top of Arma 2 can really push HDD I/O operations. It's possible that the videos themselves (which are .OGV format) can be played back in a standalone media player.

We will certainly be looking further at why some of our users are flagging up this problem.

Thank you for the tip, but unfortunately it doest help. I used contig on my windows and arma directories and the files were fragmented a bit (most important the video_pmc.pbo had 4 fragments). Although they were defragmented, the video still does not play smoothly. Since people with a SSD also report this issue, I have a feeling that file I/O isnt the problem, but that the CPU is overloaded with the game being loaded in the backround.

Note that the first five seconds of the first video in the campaign play smooth (until the ION logo shows up in the sound wave and there is a big explosion sound) and then the rest of the video shows only ten frames or something, with 2 seconds pause between them, and sound breaking up.

To find out if its a codec problem, I can recommend SHERLOCK a codec detective: http://www.updatexp.com/sherlock-codec-detective.html

I have the exact same problem has rundll.exe.

For example the first Cut-Scene starts very nicely, then a explosion sound comes up, and the video stops and every ten seconds or something I see 1 frame. Its 100% impossible to watch the cut-scenes like this.

I have a feeling that this problem is much less hardware dependent as we think. If the video stutters at the same spot for everyone, the problem is deeper I think. (maybe a buffer that is depleted at that time?)

The so stuttered in-game videos are not better than playing CG films I think. This is a good in theory but failed in practice creation...

Hi All,

I was super frustrated by this problem too. I was getting major hangups during the opening and still early when loading missions and in the editor. I was also super skeptical about defraging. But i was like what the hell I don't really wanna reinstall everything.

And volia.

I saw on another post someones suggested this Game Booster and to my very deep surprise it actually worked. Defraging eliminated the stuttering problems during the opening and in game play (1.56 had made it more or less unplayable for me). I'm sure it may not solve everything for everyone but it worked for me. Now to check if that new CBA release cleared up the rest of my 1.56 issues. . .

Its not a harddrive issue i think. Iam having the same problem while running the game and the operating system from the SSD.

What did let you think its a harddrive issue nettrucker?

Win7 64bit, E8200@3,7 Ghz, HD4850 512 MB, 4GB Ram, Intel X25 SSD

Well i'm not sure that it is hard drive issue. It was merely a suggestion to defrag. Normally when installing DLC's or large patches files are getting heavily fragmented in the Arma main directory, therefore it is always advisiable to defrag. In some cases it helps restoring performance.

I tried gamebooster for the stutters in the cut scenes for PMC and no luck :( with so many people having the same problem, I can't believe this wasn't detected pre-release.....

I just reinstalled Win7 with my new GTX460. Game experience is supersmooth but the cutscenes in PMC are unwatchable, horrible lag. Please look into that BIS!

Some cutscene videos stutter very heavily on my machine too.

I got the following components: C2D 2.66Ghz, 2GB Ram and a Geforce 9800GTX+ 512MB.

I use Win 7 Ultimate 32-bit.

My computer shouldn't be the problem. I can watch 1080p60 videos easily.

My computer is crashing in the cutscene after aviation. Whole computer freezes. I've never had anything like that happen with this game. And i have a really good system

I have the same problem too and defrag is not help for this...does BIS tested them before release??!

btw...PMC is still a great DLC i think it better than BAF,I enjoy it very much.

Win7 64 GTX460, The cut scene stutter, then lock up the PC, sometimes the video cuts out completely. Ill look into sending in DxDiag next time I play. Anyone know how to skip the cut scenes so I can at least play what I paid for???

Thanks, seems like I lose video completely, I hit escape, and I am staring at a black screen. If I move my mouse I can hear the sound of the menu that comes up, no video. Oh well
