Real Freeware Models

Recommended Posts

After having several experiences with people using De Espona models, either claiming them as their own, or without knowing they weren't actually freeware, I decided to create a sort of "library" of actual freeware stuff to help people in the community avoid them.

(Sorting them by country, then the decade the object/vehicle was created)

You may have to register after clicking a link in order to download. Most of them you won't, but several of them, including all from Renderosity, you will. I've done so myself, and haven't encountered any spam e-mails.

*Editing daily. Going through sites one at a time, so for a bit all of the links will be from one site*

Nice Idea,

I think a few people have been caught out by people claiming work as there own and in the end it turns out it's freeware or worse taken from a game and under copyright.

Props for this. *thumbs up*

A very nice idea indeed, will surely come in handy! Either in searching some fitting models for ourselves, or when performing a vetting on generous 'donators'.

Voting for making this a 'sticky' thread ;)

I'm sorry i may be a little slow today (a lot of RL work...), but i don't really get the point. Are those models freeware or not ?

de espona models are NOT freeware. The ones linked here are. I guess there could be more to be found if one would take the time to search the endless internwebz

Nope, have you been writing anything recently? I do not check the archives when I come back home. Maybe it's my wife who does not tell me that someone wrote me while I was at work?

Last time I checked there was some Hitler link, right?

Correct. I'm still going through various websites and adding links, will probably update the 1st post a couple times a week. About to add a bunch of Hungarian pistols in a little bit, along with an Arleigh Burke class, an F-16, Nimitz, etc. etc.

---------- Post added at 01:41 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:14 PM ----------

Somehow forgot about the Hungarian pistols, although I added about 20 WWII soviet vehicles, couple chinese fighters, etc. Will clean up the format later today.

How hard is it to convert .lwo files into .3ds or .obj?

If you have Lightwave, 3ds max or basically any recent 3d modeller installed - easy. Blender needed a plugin last time I've checked.

just a note if you update the first page, as it might interest some of the lads. 3DS is one of the oldest 3d file formats around. Unfortunately, i doesn't keep a lot of stuff from the original file (groups/normals/pieces etc). Might be worth mentioning which are witch - i for one would love most of the 3d software devs agreeing on one good format for most 3d meshes (obj is getting old just as well). FBX or DAE(collada) would be just great.

The file format is mentioned on the page each link points to. Just wanted to make sure they could be converted for use in ArmA. Thanks for the info!

How should one run these freeware add-ons or make them compatible with arma 2/oa ?

You misunderstand the nature of this thread. These are freeware 3d models collected in a thread for use by addonmakers. Not addons. I made this thread in an attempt to create a legitimate listing of actual freeware stuff on the internet, because 98% of what's available out there is actually stolen content ripped from games. To make them compatible with A2/OA you'd have to make the entire addon. Configs, all the LODs, probably new textures, etc. In all honesty I'm with the "If you're gonna do it, do it from scratch" crowd but because there was an epidemic of people using "Freeware" models in addons, that weren't actually freeware, this thread was born.

(You're getting a stocking full of coal for this necro-post, Linux.) ;)
