node_runner 0 Posted April 8, 2010 I guess this is one way to build your own VR helmet. The guy is playing ArmA2 in the video: http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/07/diy-vr-rig-makes-neck-pain-an-un-virtual-reality/
node_runner 0 Posted April 8, 2010 Oh no! I just saw that I mis-spelled cumbersome in the thread title. Looking like an idiot is what I deserve for posting in haste.
ladlon 10 Posted April 9, 2010 Good grief! I hope he doesn't get a phone call or knock on the door during one of his sessions....
r3volution 0 Posted April 9, 2010 Jebus, my neck is aching after just watching that, I fear to think what could result from a standard 6 hour arma2 sesh... *wince* Neat setup though, if perhaps not exactly good for your spine. :D
HyperU2 11 Posted April 9, 2010 Pain in the neck there, but I wish we had something functional like that.
node_runner 0 Posted April 9, 2010 I'm just hoping for the day that I can use my x3 screen Eyefinity setup for ArmA without having to trade all graphical fidelity. Combining the peripheral monitors with TrackIR is quite a treat, no neck pain required.
wamingo 1 Posted April 9, 2010 point for hillarity. he's playing at breakneck speeds...

And LOL at the video! :D
Leon86 13 Posted April 9, 2010 Seems to work pretty well, if the trackir doesn't lose it you could even look behind you. The large monitor and distance from the head make it cumbersome but it works. Maybe he can make a hat with a beamer in it and sit in a white room, that'll work :D
node_runner 0 Posted April 10, 2010 (bold by me)Im thinking of doing this, but what do you have to sacrifice? And LOL at the video! :D I'm being a little picky. I can run the game comfortably on three 1920x1200 displays using a single Radeon 5870 with AA turned off, post processing turned off, and everything else set to Normal/Medium. It plays pretty well and doesn't look too bad. I just get spoiled by being able to turn the settings up much higher on a single screen. I get used to the beautiful graphics. I think I probably prefer the triple screens and lower fidelity to be honest, but I switch back and forth a lot.
Franklin 0 Posted April 10, 2010 looked like he needed a better solution for how he was running his track IR, if you notice he was moving his head quite a lot, and was getting very little head movement, only a few degrees to any direction... either increase the sensitivity, or figure out a better way/place to mount the track clip. ladlon 10 Posted April 11, 2010 I assume it's counterbalanced (...man, I HOPE so!!)... but even so, that's a pretty risky rig unless you are in a big open room! Still, kudos for rigging it up. Certainly seems to work.
Dead3yez 0 Posted April 11, 2010 Meh. Something like a pair of goggles with a "mini-screen" in them is what we need. I know i've seen them before. :)
walker 0 Posted April 11, 2010 Hi all TrackIR on its own nuff said Walker
gulag 10 Posted April 11, 2010 Is counterbalanced, but anyway I don't think it's recommended to sit around and watch while he plays a game (s..t happens:rolleyes:)
ladlon 10 Posted April 11, 2010 It always seemed odd to me that the whole VR goggles thing was so big back when we didn't have the processing power to really make it work... and now that we do(?) the concept seems to have been long dropped. TrackIR is great (...I own a TrackIR4 myself), but obviously has it's limitations... Although you get used to the 'move your head, but keep your eyes on the screen' pretty quickly, it is nonetheless unnatural (...even though subtley so). Secondly, you are not fully immersed. You still see the surrounding room, and any confused cats or other pets in your peripheral. Total immersion would still be totally sweet. Why are VR goggles seemingly not being revisited these days? It seems such a great concept... It was just that the technology wasn't there yet back then. Seems like now, the 'big thing' is 3D... which I'm not wild about. I was at a store, and some clerk was showing a customer a computer running a RTS game with 3D glasses... The guy played it for a minute or so, and then concluded that you spend all your time 'focusing' your eyes, and that it was giving him a headache. The clerk agreed. I had to laugh, and again think, "...and WHY are we doing this?".
jw custom 56 Posted April 11, 2010 For people who think ACE stamina is tough, try this with a 40 inch+ tv and your refrigerator as counter weight in the back.... your gonna love ACE stamina :D
CarlGustaffa 4 Posted April 11, 2010 Not to mention those who can't play without a triplehead system - ouch :D

ladlon 10 Posted April 11, 2010 I'm just waiting for the video of some guy with this huge, clunky full body rig set up... looking much like the power loader from Aliens.... and him fumbling around his livingroom (complete with multiple holes in walls, smashed furniture and squished cat)... and his wife holding onto their children for dear life, all of them crying and pleading with him as he continues to report contacts.... :p But, like I said... seriously, kudos to him. It's cool. It seems to work. Guy's at least thinking and doing stuff.
