WIP - JTD SkyFog

Little vid showing first the problem, then the WIP solution.

First part is no fog, to show the scenario, second part is max default fog, to show the problem and the third part is max JTD SkyFog to show a *possible* solution. Let me know what you think.

Your fog reminds me of one of my favorite missions in the original Rainbow6 game (or maybe it was the Rogue Spear addon), that had fog.

Very creepy.

The fog is creepy, too. :thumbs:

That looks really nice. A lot more realistic, and it certainly adds to the immersion. Can't wait to see it up and running.

Ah that's nice. The object pop on the BIS full fog was nasty, is that what you've changed?

I mean, that's the only difference I can see, but then I am looking at it on a netbook screen :)

a flash vid (.swf) would be way more effective with a girl screaming REALLY loud :D

Tankbuster: JTD SkyFog adds fog above your head.

With BIS fog, you're able to see the sky even at the max fog setting. SkyFog fixes that ;)

btw, what does JTD stand for? Your arma1 smoke had the DM tag, which (obviously) represented your name. But JTD? :o I was thinking about this since day one..

Very good, I presume this is a great big square or hexagon centred on the player? If so how does it deal with changes in altitude (i.e. helo in/out). Could it be done entirely in script so that it can be enforced by virtue of being mission included?

To be honest, the Vimeo compression has made the video pretty poor, makes it look like there's still some popping, but really the actual effect is perfect. Objects loom out of the fog smoothly.

Nope, it's an entirely performance-hit free solution, albeit a bit of a cheat at the moment. I replace the sky texture with a blank gray texture exactly the same colour as objects in deepest fog, so that when they "pop" into view, they're exactly the same colour as the sky and thus invisible.

Then, as you move closer, the fog shading makes the objects gradually stand out from the sky. I need to work out how I can apply this effect without losing the sky texture permanently :)

Looks amazing! It appears the objects don't suddenly pop up like with the original fog, they seem to gradually come into view as they should. Do you know if this will have an affect on AI view distance, both freindly and enemy, view distance?

It should not impact on anything at all other than the player's view. To be clear - you see exactly the same amount of stuff as before, just that it comes into view more gently.

No, because you still see exactly the same stuff as you saw before, just that it comes into view more gently :)

Dm this is great, to me this is a "bugfix" in my view.

I don't play with fog specifically becuase it looked really crap popping in. I think fog in this engine isn't much up to date than the fog effect in Ghost Recons 1's Igore engine and that was 2001!

Deffo release this :)

Yep agreed. Fog is a let down in ARMA2 and it makes things look real weird on my pc. This "fix" is great DM. Thanks. :)
