Hi there

since I'm playing drums for a while now, I was wondering if there are any other musicians here in the community. I know that some are.

We (me & my buddies) just finished mixing 2 new tracks we recorded end of last year and the results are awesome, so I was wondering if there are some other musicians hanging around which are not only addicted to ArmA but also to music.

Do you write your own songs?

I mean I love playing drums on my own because there are no restrictions but I definitely prefer playing together with my buddies and having tons of fun.

that's cool man. I tried myself playing some Djembe it is fun especially when playimg together with some other people, but unfortunately my hands start to hurt very quickly and I've got no endurance meanwhile I could play drums for 8 hours in a raw.LOL

Yep, Djembe will tear your hands up until you develop the callouses, but once you get the hang of it, there a sweet drum. Used to have Full Moon drum parties when I lived in the Carribean down at the beach with crazy Island hippy chicks dancing to our drums round the campfire -good times :D

Violin is a very difficult instrument to play. I tried once and I left it in a hurry, because I was unable to hit the note straight on. Seemed that I was always out of tune.LOL I was more into the rhythm thing that's why I started to play drums and I never really stopped.

yeah music is fun even if you play on your own.

I'm awful at writing and recording, but do a bit of guitar tutoring on the side. I'm far from the greatest guitar player in the world, but to me it seems that most guitar tutors don't have any sense of pedagogy. It's a shame really, I think a lot of people would've continued with their chosen instrument if only they had a tutor that wasn't forcing them to do non-developing material.

As for violins, I think it's an awesome instrument. I like all the instruments from the violin family. So much that if I ever get a child I'll probably force her/him to play the cello just so I can get my hands on it. :p

I agree with you on that one and it's not only related to guitar tutors. My first year I was taking drums lesson I only got to play marching drum exercises on the snare drum because my teacher was following strictly his teaching method. After 1 year I stopped and found myself a private teacher. I thought by myself WTF.

I have given personally drum lessons for a long time now and my students never lost interest due the fact that I know to well how to keep them focused. They stay because it is fun to learn new things. I was studying by myself the book "Stick Control" First 3 pages took me 2 years to bring the exercises to speed and they are more difficult to play on very slow metronom settings. In any case these single beat combinations were really dry stuff and no fun at all. But after a while I thought to myself why not displace these patterns all over the drum kit instead of playing them only on the snare drum. And there is where the fun starts and you can learn to play some wicked things just applying a simple pattern. Just let your fantasy flow.

As for myself a like a lot of different music as long as it is well made. I love classical music too.

and ... very very alternative music, mixes like sample mixes from for example politicians speech, church praying people and slowed Samael in bottom

and music was first, before addons, but... real life, i had to cut hair, boys went on career and all lost in dust

but it was a lot of fun

Im an old drummer. Havent been able to play them for years though, been working on boats, travelling, living in apartments. They are my favourite sport, yes i call them a sport because i put in so much intensity and energy.

I gave up on bands long time ago, guitarists egos gave me the shits. So i just loved playing 1 hour a day. Ill be buying a house next year so ill set them back up!

EDIT- I just reread the topic, it says "MUSICIANS". Drummers aren't musicians, we're the guy who hangs around a group of musicians! lol

38 yr old guitarist and studio engineer. Got tired of paying extra studio session fees each time a band member would get "record button syndrome" so I converted by 2 car garage into a tracking studio. Mastering is at another location.

Lychesis will probably be my last big push for the original material gig in the progressive rock genre. Getting too old to be marketable. Still got the hair and it's not gray....yet lol!

The myspace page hasn't been updated as we've been working on finishing up the tracking and getting the mix finalized before we send the songs off for mastering. It's kind of hard to put up snippets of progressive tunes cuz every member has a different opinion of what part of the song should be represented lol!

Should be an update soon. There better be anyway, otherwise an extension on the name trademark will cost yet more cash :P

I know what you mean about muscle memory. In 2003, for some reason, I decided to sell everything. Didn't play for over 2 years. When I started playing again it was quite surprising how fast it comes back to you. For example. One of my fave tune to play is Pink Floyds Money. I hadnt played it for years, couldn't even properly remember how it went, I just new where on the fretboard it was played. Obviously, it wasn't spot on the first play through, but it simply came flooding back almost instantly.

@nettrucker. Jeff Beck is someone Iv'e never really got around to listening to. I may give that album a go. Cheers. EDIT: Listening to it now. Gotta love Spotify.

I played guitar and bass for a few years until I discovered Jean Michel Jarre's music.

Keyboard and synthesizer now. It's fun to experiment with waveforms, oscillators, filters and other stuff. :)

I've been making music via the computer with Cakewalk's music software for a few years as well. Mostly MIDI stuff, some audio.

No vocals! :p

But it's just a hobby. :)

Hi Total had a look at Lychesis myspace. Cool tunes man. I love progressive rock a lot. Favourite bands are Rush, Dixie Dregs,Yes, King Crimson and the list is really endless so I better stop right now.

I do not agree though with your statement I qouted above. when Hueye Lewis got famous back in the 80's he was well over 40 years old. I don't believe that music is related to age as much as it is in sports for example. When David Coverdale joined Deep Purple he signed for the first time with a major label. After Deep Purple have split up he founded Whitesnake together with other Deep Purple members a few I guess. That was in the 80's but it took him still 15 years from that to really reach the top. in the mid 90's Whitesnake got big everywhere.

It takes a lot of endurance and believe in yourself. It takes energy and constant dedication. The real problems why it has become really difficult is a long list of major events that started taking place in the mid 90's which have contributed to get the big record companies in trouble and that was Internet. But it would really getting too long discussing details. In any case me and my buddies believe that nowadays you have more tools at disposal to gain visibility and that is a positive thing considered that Internet did a lot of harm to the music industry. We have opened profiles everywhere in more than 40 sites similar to myspace because we have been asked to do so by the guys who are running it. I could go on, but I leave it here, in any case my compliments.

There's a place close to where I live where people joining together on Thursday evenings and jam together on a stage. I'm every Thursday evening there if I have no other important things to do. Met a lot of new musicians too and made some new friends. We just meet to have some fun in really wild improvisations and sometimes it's getting out of hands and it's becoming hard for the ears.LOL:D

But this is mostly due when you find yourself on stage with people you never really played with before. I see mostly that people don't listen to what the others do and everyones just playing for himself so it's getting a mess. But I already figured out the right guys to go on stage with and it's huge fun.

well I started the Alchemy project with my buddies back in 2005 and it's a perfect symbiosis. There are no ego trips. We have only one rule set.

We wrote 40 songs since now and around 30 are still WIP. We are not following a precise genre. We play Rock pop sometimes some parts are also progressive. As long as it sounds good it's Ok. We released in 2008 our first EP entitled "The Twilight Zone" We split up from the label shortly after and were stuck without distribution ( mostly digital) for about 7 month meanwhile we had quite some radio promotion ongoing. This was very unfortunate but this has been resolved in the meantime. We are currently working on a full lenght CD. We still have to find a new label but I am confident that we'll find something because in the last year we established quite some contacts.

Anyway it is nice to learn to know that there are people who are playing an instrument.

It's good to see all of these actual musicians here. I'm getting sick of people saying "musicianship is dead, DJ's are the new musicians" and crap like that. I'm not going to get into what i play too much because i hate bragging (although that sounds like bragging, sorry) but I'm into just about everything. I'm 19 working in MP&E and i've had a fair share of musical experience all over the world. although music has been a main hobby for years and i have my own band on the rise, im not further pursuing a musicians carreer. so many of my peers are telling me its a huge mistake. im currently shipping off with the USAF. my true passion is flight and mechanics. so yeah thats all i got to say

I don't agree. Electronic music is just as much music as any other genre. Different tools, different goals, different state of mind, different result. Still music though. I think your perspective vilas is simply a result of not being exposed to any decent electronic music.
