How badly is the AI affected by darkness?

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about creating a mission where you take out a power plant to disable all the street lights in a city.

Does anyone have a good idea of how darkness affects the AI's awareness? Can it be quantified?

I don't think AI is affected they seem just as deadly in complete darkness without NV as in bright daylight!

A.I. is definitely affected in TARGET AQUISITION, not in awareness.

In darkness they just need much more time to make out what's crouching around there...BUT NOT if A.I. is equiped with NV Googles. IN this case there will be no difference to daylight conditions.

....and tracking.

They are just as deadly and precise in complete darkness without NV as in daylight!

...and this depends solely on your liking since A.I. accuracy is easily tweakable.

There should be a difference between aiming/tracking at night and day. Just lowering AI accuracy would make them less accurate both night and day.

Yeah...But I dont know if it can be quantified. For example, I can crawl past a squad of 7 in a dark forest without them seeing me.( 3-4 meters from my head-they have no NV goggles of course) However, if the edge of a spotlight or headlights go on me and I continue moving, they shoot me immediately. Seems slight, but realstic...

I love these sort of missions.

My experiences are not very good with the AI at night. Running around as a civilian in resistance territory (resistance is enemy of civs), I can even get 1 m close to the patrol groups without getting shot.

Yes, they see me (and from far) but I hear them just saying "Man, 100m" and they don't shoot me.

I think the AI can't recognize me as enemy! They see me but do not recognize.

Then I took a weapon, got near of a group and shot one guy and then (but only then) they also shot me.

Does anyone know how to make the AI recognize enemies better at night ?? It even was full moon.

whether it is day or night affects the spotting ability of the AI. means, where snipers spot you from 1000m distance in bright daylight, they could pass you 5m out without noticing you at night.

on the other hand my experiences are, artificial light such as street lamps do not have any effect - it doesn't matter if you are running through a dark alley or the shine of a street lights, and AI doesn't notice you shoot out lights with silenced rifles even when they are standing close to it.

thus i believe the spotting ability is not really depending on light, but on daytime.

This was fixed in one of the pre-1.54 beta patches. AI should detect you when you're illuminated by flashlights, streetlights, vehicle lights and so on.

Really?

(shame on me for not reading all those endlessly long changelogs of patches),

however, :yay:

It's a mixed bag for me. They seem to need quite a bit a light to see, in the sense of detection. But when detected and with some kind of information sharing going on (reveal), put a huge area into suppressive mode, and ZU-23s will open up from 1000 meters away with some massive amounts of accuracy. The weapon have a magnifying scope, but not a night scope. And AI with iron sights aim extremely well. From what I remember from my own experience, we had massive problems using the sights in very low light, as the sights blended in with the dark background. A snow covered ground and some moonshine, err, moonlight, made it all better ;)
