Erm, it's a great game in small doses if you get what I mean, you couldn't play it for hours on end and not get bored, the campaign lacks depth and it is very buggy and glitchy, but I would get the game just for the online community and the editor built into the game, the only problem with making missions is you always know what's going to happen if you make it yourself, but you should get it, it's a great game. Operation Flashpoint: Dragon Rising comes out this Friday (UK), I'm going to get it because in my opinion it looks a lot more playable compared to ArmA II, just try both out and decide wherever you like it or not.

Yeah, you can be a Cow, Chicken, Alastian (a dog), Boar and a Rabbit, the graphics are great I think but the glitches you won't be able to deal with, they actually make the campaign unplayable, but it should get better after a few more patches, for now I'm just using the editor, it's a lot different to Operation Flashpoint but similar also.

@dale0404: who are you calling a troll?

ArmA/ArmA2 are the TRUE sequels to Operation Flashpoint, developed by the same company. OFP DR has mainly two things in common with the original Operation Flashpoint : the name, and the publisher. Codemasters had the rights to use the name OFP after BIS split with them many many moons ago and developed their own game. But it is NOT a true sequel.

I'd actually say that graphically, ArmA2 looks nicer, but OFPDR has some very nice animations and if youre the kind to jerk off to peoples heads exploding then maybe OFPDR is more your thing.

ArmA2 is more "sim" oriented. If you liked the original OFP you'll like ArmA2. OFPDR is more game. Console game that is.

BTW: I play every day and there are no game stopping bugs for me at least, although certain system configs dont work so well. The campaign is also completely playable now, although I havent played it for some time as MP is where its at.

errrr.. not if you make the encounters , spawns etc. random you don't... :p

I haven't even tried the campaign or any of the BI scenarios..strictly play in the editor and custom modules I downloaded.

its a good thing our moderators support Arma 2

They are not allowed to have an opinion of their own?

3) Graphics, terrain, join in progress and much more I can't recall

I say buy both and enjoy yourself.

Arma 2 is basically the spiritual successor of Operation Flashpoint (created by the same guys that did Operation Flashpoint). The graphics are very good, and if you can live with a few bugs and want challenging gameplay then it's a good game to go for. As for Dragon Rising (not created by the guys that made the original Operation Flashpoint).. well, hasn't been released yet so can't really say what it's like til I test it for myself.

The original OFP gave birth to ArmA 1&2. A good many people still enjoy the old OFP. I don't think you can label that as not being "supportive". You have to remember that these forums (and it's moderators) cover all the BI titles (and OFP is still a BI title with it's own section on these forums).

Now had he stated that he "liked OPF:OD the best" then *that* would be another thing altogether.

Yes, of course I meant the original OFP made by BIS. I never said I don't like ARMA 2 either, just that I still prefer OFP. But this is going a bit off-topic so please, continue the original discussion. :)

Ive been watching some recent videos of operation flashpoint 2 & to be fair the graphics are nowhere near what the early promo shots & videos were promising, everything looks so stiff, false & in some clips almost cartoon like! ArmA 2 although it has some glitches, looks far more gritty & realistic. Also Flashpoint 2 looks more like a cross between Brothers in arms & CoD4, which will no doubt appeal to a lot of gamers from the ADD generation, but not if your looking for something a little deeper & less arcade like. In ArmA 2 you actually have to think & use tactics even when just trying to take out one man shooting at you from a distance, in flashpoint 2 it looks like you can just run & gun your way through the game & calmly stand still in open ground taking pot shots at the enemies who cant shoot straight

The choice is entirely yours & chances are il end up owning flashpoint 2 as well, but I think ArmA 2 will stay on top by a country mile!

OFP 2 will be disappointing mark my words, its too much like Ghost recon & Cod 4, there is no realistic value in it, that I've seen atleast. and lets be honest most that play Arma 2 are looking for a good simulator not an arcade gimmic.

DR trolling should be absolutely BANNED on this forum and repeat offenders should be warned and banned in turn.

One thread has already been closed because of the persistence of several DR trollers.

If you want to discuss DR, there is a forum for that here :

http://community.codemasters.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=112

BIS has nothing to do with DR and these "I'm going to buy DR", "DR looks better" etc comments have no place here. No one cares if you are going to play DR or how it looks or plays.

I say this because it is a sensitive subject and routinely leads to arguments which derail threads.

Keep the DR chatter out of here.

Eth

PS : I'm not calling you a troll Cresswell, but we really don't need to hear about DR. I'm sure you can understand.

there is already a heated debate going on in the Dragon Rising off topic section. Why do we need another thread to discuss it?

Well, there was, it was closed and rightly so IMHO.

There is no need for any DR discussion on the BIS forums.

Eth

PS : I had no intention of derailing this thread either so back on topic :)

Gruntcrazy asked for opinions and Sgt Cresswell gave his. Personally I don't see anything wrong with it. As long as the discussion is constructive and polite, it's all fine. If you can't take someone's opinion, you'd better not open your mouth then, because that's what got the FP: DR thread locked - The endless ranting between the forum members, because they disagreed on something.

Im glad the mod hasnt closed this thread, it was a fairly calm debate before the flamers came in shooting the original poster down who,on 3 posts, probably didnt know about the OF: DR thread stashed away in off topic! It cant be denied that DR exists so why not discuss how it compares to ArmA 2 on here seen as they're both attempting to be cut from the same cloth?

As stated above I think ArmA 2 will easily come out on top :)

One question: How big are the maps in DR? Because if they're not on the same scale as A2's the two games don't stand up to any kind of comparison W.H.A.T.S.O.E.V.E.R.

I keep seeing and reading different things. I see the videos which boast access to the whole island of Skira, yet I read things like the actual playable areas only being 2kmx2km chunks of the island. I have some interest in the game, but I'm not looking for it to be something that'd take the place of ArmA2, I've already read several things from their forums about the MP limitations that has confirmed that.
